This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Lyrics to this song, unsurprisingly, are insane: Maman Neigho was frightened by Hawaiians
When all the veins ran out

When too much bone structure went missing
She thumbed the galleon Cacafuego

Forsook the eyebrows climbing
Into greasy black hairlines
Narcrotic leis
Yanked down around the melianomed ankles

Their putrid petals dropping
Erasing the white shoes

Like a face being eaten
By a jungle

Slabs of steam tables
Whiffing of onions and roses
Haunted Jacuzzis churning

All night the native bods squealing Bflat
Like choirs of pigs Seeking revenge for stolen insulin

Blip

Bust

Could anyone have divined, from Scott Walker's earliest work, the direction he'd take in this decade? Love the old and new.
Avatar 7:16pm
Flash Strap:

I'll always be a diehard for Scott 4 and everything else subordinate to that, and frankly I am no better than most at actually LISTENING to Tilt/Drift/Bish Bosch, but it's just awe-inspiring to see an artist so fiercely pursue a vision. He's basically Morpheus and Orpheus at once

Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, Sir Flash! Speaking of Mike Cooper and Ornette Coleman, I received an email from Mike earlier today saying he was devastated by his passing. Mike performed a gig this evening (in Rome) launching his new record, Light on a Wall. He said he was opening the show with Ornette's "Story Teller."

Unless we're each speaking of a different Mike Cooper!

I will be devoting my program to Ornette tomorrow, including an air of the entirety of Free Jazz.
Avatar 7:20pm
Flash Strap:

I believe we are speaking of the same grand fella. I'm playing a few selections from his new record, Fratello Mare, this evening, and then some others from his exotic records

Mike is the most stupendous of fellows. And a good friend and supporter of WFMU/Give the Drummer Radio!

I haven't. Can't wait to! Mr. Cooper wears Hawaiian shirts pretty much 24 hours a day, by the way. Maybe even 25.

"you can see those scenes in magazines, but you never can see the flies! Oh, it looks like our back-alleys" follow that up with "where there's no such word as no" and you got a real ripe piece of imperial art, I mean DAMN

Dean:

Hawaiian shirts and great music: sounds to me like Brian Hartsell at the amazing Analog Room in San Jose: http://www.metroactive.com/features/the-analog-room-vinyl-records-brian-hartsell.html He's always in a Hawaiian shirt when I visit. The interview's "money 'graf," literally: "You can overdo the success thing... I have a nice gig. It goes well. I do what I want. Could I make more money? Yeah, I could make more money. Would I be happier? No. I get to listen to music and play with toys all day. Kind of a good deal."
