This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Thanks Kaminsky! great show today
Avatar 7:05pm
Flash Strap:

the still is from John Whitney's awesome short film, "The Matrix III" with music by Terry Riley
Avatar 7:06pm
hyde:

ah, Whitney. I knew it was one of those guys....

also, I love that Rousseau painting. there was a fantastic Rousseau exhibit at MOMA that I saw years ago (probably like 20+ years ago) and that painting was amazing.
Avatar 7:06pm
Flash Strap:

boy I'd love to see a good Rousseau exhibit
Avatar 7:10pm
hyde:

god, i just looked it up. it was THIRTY years ago. it was a great show, had all the major paintings and dozens of others i had never seen.
Avatar 7:12pm
Flash Strap:

He was such a bizarre figure in the painting world. The Surrealists loved him
Avatar 7:20pm
Flash Strap:

i love the idea of live electronics/marimba and would want to see such a show
Avatar 7:27pm
hyde:

marimbas are cool. i used to listen to that Steve Reich "six marimbas" thing a lot.
Avatar 7:27pm
Flash Strap:

man, yes. I should have gotten that cued up for this show.

Marimbas are awesome
Avatar 7:28pm
Flash Strap:

I used this as bed music about a month or so ago. realized as it was happening that it was WAY too good to be talked over. this is my penance
Avatar 7:28pm
Flash Strap:

seriously one of my favorite electronic works
Avatar 7:37pm
northguineahills:

I'm unfamiliar w/ this piece, nice!
Avatar 7:43pm
hyde:

this is shaping up to be the shortest playlist ever
Avatar 7:45pm
Flash Strap:

Hi NGH! glad to hear it!
Avatar 7:46pm
Flash Strap:

@hyde: Oh, man I know it! the last few were like 2 whole screens long, and this one might make up like 3 or 4 inches. Still, I have a "bunch" of good stuff left to play
Avatar 7:48pm
Flash Strap:

i mean, shit, that Orientlism playlist was so long i was exhausted from typing by the end
Avatar 7:50pm
hyde:

it's quality, not quantity ;)
Avatar 7:53pm
Flash Strap:

very true. i really adore long-form music – sometimes it just has to be done. take the plunge and play some monster-length stuff
Avatar 7:58pm
ndbob:

excellent first hour Evan - catch the rest on the archive as always!
Avatar 7:59pm
Flash Strap:

See ya bob, miss ya when ya go (as always)
Avatar 7:59pm
Flash Strap:

Honestly, these recordings may be my favorite of the works of Harmonia. wish there were more live tapes of this aspect of the krautrock scene
Avatar 8:00pm
Flash Strap:

We got any deeply-held Harmonia opinions out there? I'll be honest and say that some of my least favorite stuff is the Eno collaborations. Wish it weren't so
Avatar 8:06pm
Flash Strap:

Speaking of preferences, I can't really get into Grobschnitt but can hardly keep this Eroc off the turntable
Avatar 8:08pm
hyde:

i don't have a lot of Harmonia, myself. i think i only have Deluxe.
Avatar 8:11pm
bennett4senate:

I like the track Watussi. Often though with Harmonia I get sidetracked to Gottsching records, particularly Dream and Desire
Avatar 8:12pm
Flash Strap:

there isn't much to have unfortunately... Deluxe, Musik von Harmonia (pretty essential i think), and then Live 74 and the Eno stuff
Avatar 8:13pm
northguineahills:

Okay, it's weird I haven't heard of Eroc either.
Avatar 8:13pm
Flash Strap:

Hello to you B4S! yeah, Watussi is tremendous. Harmonia always leads me astray to Cluster, particularly Zuckerzeit, and Moebius and Plank.
Avatar 8:14pm
Flash Strap:

Eroc is the solo project of Grobschnitt drummer/bandleader. way more electronic ambient than the Grob stuff, which is more skronky and Zappa via Faust
Avatar 8:15pm
Flash Strap:

Dream and Desire is good, but now I need to give it a real listen now that you've mentioned it
Avatar 8:16pm
Flash Strap:

"Der Zauberer's Traum"="The Sorceror's Dream"
Avatar 8:18pm
bennett4senate:

It's shreddy.
Avatar 8:19pm
northguineahills:

No relation to the Tangerine Dream sndtrk.
Avatar 8:29pm
Flash Strap:

Gottsching does tend towards shreddin'
Avatar 8:33pm
northguineahills:

Wow, I don't have this Terry Riley.
Avatar 8:33pm
Flash Strap:

hold on, I'll find it for you
Avatar 8:34pm

Avatar 8:35pm
Flash Strap:

lots of good stuff there, too. same guy, Maio, who does that huge library site
Avatar 8:38pm
Flash Strap:

the library site: maiolibrary.blogspot.com
Avatar 8:39pm
hyde:

wow, sweet. i know that library site (i'm kind of overwhelmed by it, honestly) but i didn't know he had another. thanks!
Avatar 8:40pm
Flash Strap:

he even has ANOTHER: garagesaleterritory.blogspot.com...
Avatar 8:41pm
Flash Strap:

that one's not as essential to pick through though, IMO. The library site is daunting as hell but its worth the time to get the best stuff at least, while the links are still live
Avatar 8:43pm
Flash Strap:

but of course, it's the picking that's the hardest part
Avatar 8:44pm
hyde:

that's the problem. i don't know the stuff well enough to know what to grab! i occasionally get a tip (sometimes from what you play) but usually i just throw up my hands when i look at it.
Avatar 8:44pm
Flash Strap:

it's such hard work sometimes
Avatar 8:46pm
northguineahills:

tak tak, Flash!
Avatar 8:47pm
Flash Strap:

as far as names go, you can't go TOO wrong with JP Decerf, Janko Nilovic, Pierric, Bruno Nicolai, of course Roger Roger/Nino Nardini/Cecil Leuter/etc.
Avatar 8:50pm
Flash Strap:

Music Scene is usually a pretty interesting label, and he has all these really unusual Musax label LPs that I'd recommend. The Chappells are worth looking up on discogs and just seeing if the song titles or general vibe intrigue you (that's what I do for everything, and with the way library music is conceived, it works to a certain degree). Same with Edipan, MP2000. I'm sure I've left out a ton.
Avatar 8:51pm
Flash Strap:

oh man also Syd Dale, Peter Reno, and Camille Sauvage. And Sonoton is pretty strong. And Tele Music. hahaha it's too much
Avatar 8:51pm
Flash Strap:

welly welly welcome NGH
Avatar 8:52pm
hyde:

i'm glad you left out a ton. just this will surely be of great help hacking thru the thicket.
Avatar 8:53pm
Flash Strap:

i'm miles away from being an expert, but hit me up if i can ever help you navigate
Avatar 8:55pm
hyde:

will do. but generally your show + blog alone gives me plenty of pointers!
Avatar 9:08pm
Flash Strap:

I'm glad to hear it. I aim to help spread the Truth and the Light of good & weird music in all ways
Avatar 9:10pm
Flash Strap:

Man this is a brand new, clean record. I don't know what business that scratch has being on here, unless it's part of the recording
Avatar 9:14pm
Ike:

Hello. Latecomer again. I like this! Playlist look fantaxellent, will have to hit the archive later.
Avatar 9:15pm
Flash Strap:

Hello Ike! happy to have you and sorry to say we're just about through
Avatar 9:17pm
Flash Strap:

Man this track is a grower I guess. I'm diggin it more than I was previously. The whole record is so fuckin weird, it's extremely difficult to digest, and yet so basically pleasant and intriguing that it doesn't put you off straight away.
Avatar 9:19pm
Flash Strap:

I'm just happy to see the Sun Araw enterprise follow an uncompromised, shifting vision. I keep thinking about dedicating a whole show to that trajectory but haven't got it together yet
Avatar 9:28pm
hyde:

cool show Flash, thanks!
Avatar 9:30pm
Flash Strap:

thank you for listening, hyde. nice chattin with ya
