Argh, 54. Awful to hear it. Sorry you endured such a loss. Bad year for bosses; my excellent boss at a previous full-time job passed from a rare cancer in January. She was a preternaturally young 65. Hope these days get easier for you as they progress.

Greetings, @βrian and @listener james! Thanks for tuning in.

Welcome, good @doctorjazz.

This Miles performance is 45 years old.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am

Keith Jarrett had just joined the band.

Nice, Miles sounds really good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am
Jeff Golick:

Agreed.

I love how distant the audience sounds. I imagine Miles & Co. on a stage that's about 100 feet high.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am
Jeff Golick:

Fillmore EAST, btw. The record Black Beauty from around this same time was recorded at Fillmore West a little earlier in 1970.

Ha. Yeah. I sort of imagine that electric band playing in part out of fear.

Charlie Haden on bass here.

The groove on Tribal Ghost, right up my alley.

If you enjoy this InVerso duo, the whole record is available, remarkably, as a "name your price" download. Click on the link in the playlist.

Greets!

I have a fill-in this Friday. Mayuko's Play Vertigo is filling in for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am

Thanks, @UM! I knew both you and Doug had fill-ins but didn't have the info at hand.

Here's that interview with Kikuchi, by Ethan Iverson: dothemath.typepad.com... It's wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am

Excellent to hear, UM. I dug the hell out of Mayuko's first program. But you shall be missed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am
Jeff Golick:

Lot of electric Miles vets on this Kochi cut - Al Foster, Mtume, Dave Liebman, Steve Grossman. I think it's fair to say that Japanese listeners grokked what 70s Miles was up to before the rest of us.

I spotted and fixed a "miniscule" in proofs just now. Can I go back to bed?
  11:13am

That is sad news. Nice of ECM to report on the story, despite his having made only one studio record for them. I love the Winter & Winter recordings.

That seems fair to me, @ljfw.

Not sure Poo is on the Motian Vanguard releases, all or many of which were originally JMT. I believe the Tethered Moon W&W releases were new on W&W.

Well, it's Sunday Lunch right now, so enjoy, @duke. Always great to see you here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am

@Dean: I've cued up those Motian On Broadway volumes; he's on those. Probably won't get to them, though...
  11:25am

@ljfw, Wasn't certain what you'd corrected, presumably the spelling. You don't actually see texts these days in historical minuscules and majuscules, do you?

Hey, @northguineahills! He kept a pretty low profile.

doctorjazz:

True, I try to keep up with this stuff, name vaguely familiar. This seems to be in electric Miles territory, nice.
  11:35am
Dean:

Yep, even though he worked with big shots like Motian and Peacock, inter alia. I forgot that there is one JMT TM record devoted to Kurt Weill tunes. The most perversely fun disk, IMO, is the W&W tribute to Tosca!

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I always say the Complete 'In a Silent Way' sessions was a revelation to me - & this seems pretty much an homage to that - which is fantastic. Filled in the gaps between the Acoustic early 60s Miles & the later Electric Miles - helped me see it as a less abrupt transition (I always liked both phases).

HEY! Coming up at the top of the hour, it's the Nazario Scenario! See/hear: wfmu.org... - wipe away these blues and sing along with Amanda.

Hello, @Rev Rabbit!
  11:43am
Dean:

Poo often sings along a la Keith Jarrett.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah that's a problem, @Dean.
  11:48am
Dean:

For some. I don't let it bother me. It'd be fun to hear "duets" by Kikuchi and Jarrett, exclusively vocal tracks. Phil Minton territory.
Avatar 11:49am
northguineahills:

@RevRabbit: I have that one as well.

I've also mused out loud that 'Bitches Brew' suddenly doesn't seem so 'lonely', & its' influence finally seems acknowledged by many - but listening to such shows as this I think instead I was just in the dark myself about who was picking up on Electric Miles the whole time...
