Not *the* Absolute Elsewhere? The one *not* from Olympia & Seattle, WA?

For that matter, not *the* Randall Kennedy? The one at Harvard Law?

All swabbed and demagnetized for today's show?

It's Tony's Tuesday Tape Tunes Time! Hey Tony & Hisstorians!

Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean! Nope, not that prog band with Bruford!
  12:05pm
Dean:

My copy of the Bruford Absolute Elsewhere LP, the concept album based on von Däniken's UFO theories, is quadraphonic. Remember those?
Avatar 12:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Webhamster Henry & V Priceless!

Today's show has been all swabbed down, but not demagnetized. Never replaced my old demagnetizer's battery, so it is now kaput.
Avatar 12:09pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: My copy is quad as well. Wonder if it came any other way?
Avatar 12:12pm
Tony Coulter:

Free trip to Flumdiddle for anyone who can ID the LP underneath today's cassettes.
  12:14pm
Dean:

I'm certain I first heard it in normal stereo. Pretty sure I bought mine used in 1976 at Cheapo Cheapo Records, Rupert St., in London.

That LP under the cassettes looks a lot like a Greg Goodman record with George Cremaschi and Garth Powell, Woody Woodman's Circus of Constructions ... but not exactly the same.
Avatar 12:18pm
Tony Coulter:

It's not Greg Goodman -- but you're getting close, style-wise. It's a weirdo improv type LP.
  12:19pm
Dean:

Well, wow. L.A. Mantra includes a track by Fat & Fucked Up, L.A.'s "punk" string quartet! Never saw 'em, never even heard 'em. This'll be a treat! They'd play punk venues, e.g,. Al's Bar.
  12:20pm
Dean:

Heard Evan Parker play with Goodman at Goodman's house, which is walking distance from my place in Berkeley.

Fat & Fucked Up put out a split release with Le Forte Four on the other side -- have always wanted to hear that.
  12:24pm
Dean:

And Savage Republic enjoyed a mildly popular career. I was half expecting to see Vivabeat on this sampler, although they're nowhere near as "out there" as the tracks so far have been. They were active around this time.

Avatar 1:28pm
Tony Coulter:

Fat & Fucked Up is a fine band name. On the other hand, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is the single most annoying band name I have ever come across. It would pain me greatly to have to say that out loud.
  1:29pm
MrFab:

Hey, an actual album I have! Just got in so don't know if Tony mentioned this, but If/Then/Else is actually The Weirdos in their industrial guise.

Debt of Nature features a then-teenaged avant guitarist to the stars Brad Laner. Seeing them and the great Savage Republic on the same bill opening for Wall of Voodoo made quiet an impression on my young self.
  1:30pm
MrFab:

QUITE an impression. Wasn't quiet at all.
Avatar 1:31pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, MrFab!! Did not mention the Weirdos connection (or Brad Laner) -- so thanks for filling in the blanks!
Avatar 1:36pm
Chris from DC:

Yeah, I had no idea about that side of the Weirdos, cool!
  1:37pm
Dean:

Had no idea I/T/E was Dix and the boys, but I vaguely recall hearing them on LA radio back in "the day." I also remember first hearing the name Fat & Fucked Up (couldn't have been on air...) and thinking, "This is the greatest band name ever." Foster the People and Walk the Moon vie for worst band names, and WtM's "Shut Up and Dance" for worst song name. Also worst song.
Avatar 1:38pm
Tony Coulter:

The sax player on this Randall Kennedy tape is Doug Wieselman, who ended up being part of the NYC Downtown scene.
Avatar 1:39pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Chris from DC!
  1:39pm
Dean:

One of my horribly bad bands (but I repeat myself), M (not the British synth-pop guy), was invited by Wall of Voodoo to open for a show at Madame Wong's in LA's Chinatown. Can't remember if it was Marc or Stan who called me. But we broke up that week.
  1:46pm
MrFab:

Well dang, if Wall of Voodoo wanted you to open for 'em, you all couldn't have been that bad. Unless they really did think you were those "Pop Muzik" boys.
Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

Wasn't there a Chinese restaurant in Berkeley that bands also played at? Something "Gardens"?
  1:47pm
MrFab:

Mabuhay Gardens was in Frisco
Avatar 1:48pm
Tony Coulter:

Oh yeah -- that's it. This East Coaster (until 6 years ago) thanks you.
  1:50pm
Dean:

There was SF's Mabuhay Gardens, Philippine.

M's sole claim to quasi-fame is being the first band to appear on Flipside records. Our 7" was recorded at my garage on a rainy morning. ATV's Alex Ferguson was staying with Flipside's photographer and hinted he might show up to play on the record, but no.

Flipside tends not to include the record in its catalog, with good reason.
  1:52pm
MrFab:

Yep, legendary spot. Everyone from Devo to Dead Kennedys played there. Maybe this guy could have collaborated with 'em: The Dead Randall Kennedys?
Avatar 1:53pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha!
  1:55pm

Penelope Houston, another Mabuhay stalwart, is due to appear on Diane's Kamikaze Fun Machine a week from this Thursday. She works with my wife, so I prodded her to contact Diane. No kidding.

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Hey everyone, don't forget to stay tuned to the Drummer Stream for a brand-new mix from the mighty STEINSKI, immediately after Tony Coulter's show. It will begin around 3:04 and run for 75 minutes.

The program is called THE KNOWLEDGE: A ROUGH MIX. Here is Steinski's description:

"Sharpen your chakras, speak fluent Broken English; a further exploration of spoken word audio, containing excerpts from over 80 instructional recordings, covering topics from skeet shooting and handwriting analysis to multi-level marketing and penis enlargement. With musical instructions from Bonnie Raitt, Dinah Washington, Dr. John, Redman, Andre Williams, Ray Bryant, and Shirley Ellis."

I have heard it and think it is brilliant, hypnotic, transfixing. Please continue the amiable chatter over on Steinski's playlist page at the conclusion of Tony's show: wfmu.org...
  2:18pm
Dean:

@clayton s: You are the first person I've met, virtually or otherwise, who owns the thing! We pressed 200, I recall. It's a scarce commodity. Thanks for the props.

An aside to Tony: one of the guys in M is the prog-in-a-pristine-language guy whom I recently mentioned to you. Another is his twin brother, the painter.

Curious as to which of these bands are from DC as the tape cover mentions. Not familiar to me.
  2:28pm
MrFab:

Wrong Washington, Chris.
  2:28pm
Dean:

@TC: A couple possibilities here. I can try to locate the handful of remaining copies I have and send one to you. I can also rip a CD-R produced by the prog-guy, including the full single (three tracks) as well as sundry outtakes by the band and an earlier group, The Twits (proclaimed "the ultimate in embarrassment rock" by KROQ's Rodney Bingenheimer when he introduced us at Van Nuys' Rock Corporation). Either M or Twits did a reggae version of "Sonic Reducer," for instance.

Hadn't looked on the playlist the last two.5 hours, and thought it was weird I was listening to a symphony of Morse code breakers, and found my iTunes jumped to free103point9's stream. (sometimes it jumps to the main WFMU stream).

Precisely when I didn't quite practically live at the Masque and Al's Bar, where I would stop in to do homework over a beer some nights. Of Mabuhay bands I heard in LA, I remember most vividly The Offs, Crime, and Sleepers. Ironically, I never heard The Avengers live!
