hiragana is what we learn first. then katakana, then kanji.
Avatar 7:30pm
northguineahills:

Katagana is the syllable based alphabet in Japan.
Avatar 7:31pm
northguineahills:

I meant hiragana, katagana is for romanji words, (it's been 26 years since I lived there as a kid.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Gary:

Hey, Matt! Thanks for the 411!
Avatar 7:34pm
Mayuko:

@northguineahills I hope you didn't have too hard time living there as a little kid!! (both in terms of alphabets & culture)
Avatar 7:45pm
northguineahills:

@Mayuko: I was 10-13 years old, and it was a challenge, but I made some friends that my family still keep in touch w/. By my last year I was conversational in Japanese, but I lost it before I heard Japanese again when I moved to NYC (I used to be able to read Hiragana, and had the Kanji memorized for all of the street signs and train stations (even most were bilingual). I still am good at profanity, the first words a 10-year old boy memorizes in any language.

That's great, I'm happy to hear that, northguineahills. I would imagine it to be pretty challenging. I had a hard time even as a Japanese kid 26 yrs ago myself, haha. You should be proud of yourself!

Hi! I am enjoying your show this evening.
Avatar 8:15pm
Mayuko:

Do you know if there is a name for this kind of music, Gary? This Veayo Tmay Production 1 & Penny Lao 2 kind of stuff? I used to hear something like this but without vocal all the time in a vietnamese restaurant in the neighborhood in Tokyo where I lived - and I was always curious!!! Tried to ask staff but they didn't speak Japanese, I asked them to show me the cd cover but it was just some home-made cassette tape. Guitar exactly like that and that base guitar line that goes on and on forever. I see these you played are Cambodia/Laos, but I heard it in the vietnamese place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
Gary:

Hi Quinn!! @Mayuko, it may have been Luk Thung or Morlam ... but if it was Vietnamese music, then it was something else.
Avatar 8:22pm
Mayuko:

hmm! it could have been a vietnamese restaurant ran by Cambodian people or something. Like a Chinese restaurant ran by Japanese. I'll look into them in any case. Loved the track you played. Thanks!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Gary:

Mais oui!
