Please tell me if I'm getting redundant, but I don't think I've asked on your show: Am I the only one who thinks "Promises" is deliberately meant to recall "You May Think I'm Crazy"? Brilliant if it was.

Back to "I Guess I'm Dumb" for a moment...that song makes me think that Brian had a momentary Bacharach thing. Channeling him, just a bit.

Very Burt - and co-written by Russ Titelman - so that must mean something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am

Yeah, I don't have a handle on the Wilson/Titelman words/music divide.

Michael Shelley:

I just found out Gary Usher wrote the music to "Lonely Sea" and Brian wrote the lyrics
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am
Uncle Michael:

That's interesting. Lots of people hear the Burt in "Dumb," we just don't know who's behind that.

It's my first Brian Wilson interview question. I promise.

No, I'm never interviewing him.

Gaylord Fields:

@Michael Shelley: That's fascinating, as Brian isn't a particularly strong lyricist, "'Til I Die," which is said to be his, excepted. More typical is "Girl Don't Tell Me," which, despite its glorious "Ticket to Ride"-inspired melody, is a lyrical hash. A more successful Brian lyric is "Busy Doin' Nothin'" with its stream-of-consciousness home directions.

my fave Sylvain Sylvain song from one of my fave records. gonna have to track this one down
Avatar 11:36am
Michael Shelley:

I have a mix I made cd of songs credited to Brian alone - and it's interesting. In 1994 Mike Love won that suit and had his name added to 90+ songs (I think) - so that cd might be out of date...

Thing is, Mike actually did write the lyrics for all those songs. Brian, seemingly being unable to tell a lie, testified as such in court when sued by Mike.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Okay: Aside from the unique arrangement & production attributes of the Beach Boys (obviously the best harmonies) - the Beach Boys occupy a different emotional space than the Beatles. THe 1960s were about this fascinating & affecting balance of Innocence - & the sometimes thrilling, sometimes crushing Loss of same. This is 'Pet Sounds' theme specifically, for instance. Sir Macca's genius for Melody & Romanticism, & Lennon's definitive psychological/emotional/intellectual complexities are a different animal...It also/even matters that the BEach Boys are American, hence Our Own somehow - predating the British Invasion & touching back on JFK & Camelot & *that* particular gigantic Loss of Innocence...
