Hi guys! I'm the canary in the coal mine tonight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm
listener james from westwood:

What's that Moody Blues lyric? "Breathe deep, the gathering methane..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
Doug Schulkind:

Oh crapola! I forgot to announce on my show that Mayuko Fujino and Play Vertigo will be filling in for me next Tuesday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm

Whoo! Excellent to hear!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm

Coal tail set!

Just remember, the idea was mine first.

It's a rich enough vein for everyone to dig.

All hail to Doug!
The entire stream was his idea, to be honest
Avatar 7:10pm
Jesse K:

pictures today are all nail houses, mostly in China

Mayuko:

Hello Jesse! The first time real time tuning in! I wanted to tell you that I saw your website the other day and loved your art very much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Jesse
The stream runs cool and clear, but underground entirely.
Avatar 7:12pm
Jesse K:

Hi Mayuko, thanks so much! Looking forward to going back to back with you next week!
Avatar 7:13pm
Mayuko:

ah yes Doug! the next week is already September 1st! unbelievable.
Avatar 7:14pm
Jesse K:

@Doug, you are a wellspring of GTDR. Like a Daniel Plainview of radio, setting up fountainheads of sound all over the country. But much more friendly
Avatar 7:15pm
Jesse K:

whoa, sorry got a little carried away with that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Jeff Golick:

How about a Johnny Appleseed of radio, planting kernels of sonic delights that bloom and blossom throughout the land?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Doug Schulkind:

Mayuko's fill in for me ( her playlists are here: wfmu.org... ) will only be the beginning (huge hint) of something big...

@Jesse K
I prefer the Daniel Plainview fountainhead over the Ayn Rand kind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
listener james from westwood:

@Doug: Ooh, hoping that turns out to be what I've been crossing my fingers for!
Avatar 7:20pm
Jesse K:

@Jeff, probably better though wasn't he a metaphor for something?
Avatar 7:21pm
steve:

hey Jesse, nice cassette sounds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James
Don't be cross with me, Buster!
Avatar 7:23pm
Jesse K:

Hi Steve, thanks! got a real long cassette coming up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Jeff Golick:

So it seems there was a real Johnny Appleseed, nee Chapman, but Michael Pollen tells us (via wiki) that since Johnny Appleseed was against grafting, his apples were not of an edible variety and could be used only for cider: "Really, what Johnny Appleseed was doing and the reason he was welcome in every cabin in Ohio and Indiana was he was bringing the gift of alcohol to the frontier. He was our American Dionysus."

Therefore, by the transitive property of metaphors, Doug is our American Dionysis. Or, if you prefer, our Dougonysis.
Avatar 7:28pm
Jesse K:

whoa I screwed up the vibe there by chopping up that African Head Charge track. SORRY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Doug Schulkind:

As long as it's not dialysis, Jeff Golick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
listener james from westwood:

I read the New Yorker for American diaeresis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Jeff Golick:

I bow (coöperatively) in your general direction, @listener james.
Avatar 7:40pm
Mayuko:

Apparently that Akira song was an opening song for a film from 1960. www.youtube.com... That was kinda silly, funny song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
listener james from westwood:

Well done, Jesse! And shockingly, I still haven't read Mary Norris's book on copyediting for the New Yorker. Heresy!
Avatar 7:43pm
Jesse K:

Oh, nice one Mayuko thanks! It was a little silly but I had to shoehorn it in to that set somehow
Avatar 7:48pm
Mayuko:

That was strangely a great fit into that set, Jesse! It's always fun for me to hear music from my country in a totally unexpected way like that. And I meant it was the lyrics that was a bit silly ... musicwise that was pretty nice!
Avatar 7:56pm
Jesse K:

I really love a lot of different styles of Japanese music but I think I kind of freaked a guy out at the ICA when he put the headphones on and I was playing a Hikawa Kiyoshi song that was kind of recent.
Avatar 7:57pm
Jesse K:

Oh, the important bit of information was that he was Japanese.
Avatar 8:04pm
Mayuko:

I have to say playing any Enka song could be pretty aggressive move for most of the people, haha! Unless they're Japanese. Even Rob Weisberg said he's not a huge fan of it (and yet of course he owns way more Enka stuff than I do.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm
Uncle Michael:

I have lots of records I don't like too!
Avatar 8:08pm
Jesse K:

1. I not so secretly love enka
2. Hi Uncle Michael!
3. THESE ARE BIRDS PLAYING GUITARS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Uncle Michael:

4. Therefore, Uncle Michael is a bird.
Avatar 8:10pm
Jesse K:

Does that explain the turtles thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
Uncle Michael:

It's turtles all the way down. As I understand it, that's supposed to explain everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
Uncle Michael:

Are these guitars tuned to chords?
Avatar 8:14pm
Jesse K:

Yeah, I believe they're all left out on stands in a museum, tuned to different chords. The birds land and fly around and goof off and it made this.
Avatar 8:15pm
Jesse K:

I'm going to channel Doug here for a second: Most of the fretting was probably done by the curators, who had to clean up poop every day
Avatar 8:15pm
northguineahills:

Sounds like a Lee Renaldo outtake w/ a field recording.
Avatar 8:16pm
Jesse K:

Hey northguineahills!
Here's what it looked like: diccan.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
Uncle Michael:

I had imagined the guitars oriented horizontally, strings upward, and bird seed sprinkled on them.

@Jesse, I think I saw images of that exhibit in the Wire years ago.
Avatar 8:20pm

I almost got to see it at the Peabody Essex Museum north of here but the line was too long and I hadn't planned well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm

I have to go back to hanging a mic out my window during my show. I like hearing birds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm

good evening Jesse and All
Avatar 8:24pm

Can you hang a guitar out there as well?
Avatar 8:25pm
Jesse K:

hey howdy coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
Uncle Michael:

I have a bass. Does that help?
Avatar 8:27pm
Jesse K:

Do you think their tiny talons can pluck bass strings?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
Uncle Michael:

Maybe. I don't seem to have may lead singers in the flock. They never come near the mic.
Avatar 8:30pm
northguineahills:

I think they are zebra finches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
coelacanth:

these nail house pictures always excite me - and bum me out.
...i'd be one of them. fuck those billionaire developers who think everyone's for sale and no one's as important as them!

Yeah, nails to the end!

I'm no ornithologist, but my grandmother taught me my birds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Uncle Michael:

There's a bike shop here in town that wouldn't sell out and they got built around. During the construction, the guy had a port-o-pot out on his sidewalk for about a year when the developers "accidentally" severed his connection to city sewers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
Uncle Michael:

i.kinja-img.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
coelacanth:

oh,man! but that's why it bums me out. Life becomes miserable.
- the thing is, usually it's not about a beautiful home passed down in the family (usually) -it's about these pigs who have the money but don't make an offer that adequately compensates for the ordeal of relocating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
coelacanth:

UM, that's in your town? is it still a bike shop?
Avatar 8:42pm
Jesse K:

Yeah it is bleak but a thorn in the side of progress is better than total unabated mallscapes in my opinion

Tuning in late, hi. Cool field recordings. (Can't sign in cuz I don't remember my password)

Trouble didn't play her usual birds today, so I feel like I'm catching up now.

Do you have this bird bush warbler singing like this in the US too?! So funny to hear this familiar voice now!
Avatar 8:45pm
Jesse K:

heya anonymous Chris!
catch up on all the week's glitchy birdsounds
Avatar 8:45pm
Jesse K:

This might be recorded in Japan, Toshiya Tsunoda did the recording and manipulation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
coelacanth:

i like the image for Mika Vainio/Joachim Nordwall where there's 5-6 (or more) holdouts. 'still hope! still community!

Yes Jesse i agree. i'm not opposed to all "progress",but i've not been convinced that the demise of culture and community is progress.
Avatar 8:46pm

This has been a wonderful set. Still being stuck with work and yet feels like I'm enjoying a pleasant summer night outdoor! (especially with the amphibians)

@Mayuko, turns out those Bush Warblers were recorded on the Miura Peninsula
Avatar 8:51pm
chromaphone:

So these are all messed with and not pure recordings right?
Avatar 8:52pm
Mayuko:

that's ok I love metallic too... now it feels like I'm taking a nice little walk through an industrial area...
Avatar 8:52pm
Jesse K:

These cicadas are not messed with as far as I know. I'm not positive about the Ernesto Diaz-Infante track. The Toshiya Tsunoda was definitely messed with by him.
Avatar 8:54pm

Here's the release we're listening to right now, says not altered in any way: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 8:55pm

ha! I do remember there were a bunch of them in miura peninsula. that area is so beautiful, where the film director Ozu used to live.

this all sounds like tiny machines making noises. teeny construction site or something.
