This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Looking forward to this -- tho I will have to bow out at around 8:00
Avatar 6:58pm
Flash Strap:

Well I'll just play junk starting at 8:01, to play my best material would be meaningless without your ears receiving. Great show last night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm
listener james from westwood:

A hearty Mganga! to Evan and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm
Gary:

Thanks, man! I hope you'll explain who Tak Shindo is (was), as I hadn't heard of him / her until last night
Avatar 7:02pm
Flash Strap:

Hello Hello James the Listener
  7:02pm
Dean:

Today's theme isn't a "death by mganga" joke, is it?
Avatar 7:05pm
Flash Strap:

If it were, I don't think I would get it. Is this a hoary old trope that I've missed out on?
Avatar 7:05pm
ndbob:

evening Evan and everyone!

Dean:

Yes: http://www.jokes4us.com/dirtyjokes/bungajoke.html
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
listener james from westwood:

My mom was a great fan of Martin Denny and Les Baxter back in the day, so when she first heard Shindo, she went on a tear through the record stores of Manhattan trying to find his records. For whatever reason it was damn near impossible to find his stuff, at least where she was looking.
Avatar 7:08pm
Carmichael:

Hey there, Flash. Howdy, Explorers.
Avatar 7:08pm
hyde:

yay, tak shindo! i still haven't listened to mganga since you hipped me to that download, so it's good to hear. all i really have besides this new one is brass and bamboo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
Doug Schulkind:

Happy Tak!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Doug Schulkind:

Call me crazy, but I see a certain similarity with this album cover: i1039.photobucket.com...
Avatar 7:14pm
hyde:

dionysus records has been around for a long time. i remember buying records of theirs in the 80's. mostly garage rock stuff then, i still have a cynics 45, i think.
Avatar 7:15pm
Flash Strap:

Hehe Dean I have heard that one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Doug Schulkind:

Ohmigodilovethisrecordsomuch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
listener james from westwood:

@Doug: LOL @ the cover comparison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm

Hello Listener J@mes!

Howdy carmichael! Hyde! Doug with the eagle eye!
Avatar 7:19pm

That's right, Hyde... I think I have some garage stiff from them as well. Forgot about those
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
melinda:

Hi all!
Avatar 7:21pm
Flash Strap:

Hi there Melinda!
Avatar 7:22pm
Flash Strap:

this is sort of the best Bali Hai, I think
Avatar 7:24pm
Flash Strap:

I like this version a lot, but my favorite will always be Arthur Lyman's from Bwana'A
Avatar 7:26pm
Flash Strap:

Here I said I wouldn't play Martin Denny. Then I just go ahead and do it right away. Dammit. Shindo on koto here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
listener james from westwood:

An entirely understandable urge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
melinda:

Sounding good tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
coelacanth:

buenas noches Flash & Explorers.
Avatar 7:46pm
Flash Strap:

Thanks Melinda

Hola, coela
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
coelacanth:

that background while you spoke was a cover, essentially, of "haru no umi" - a song Mayumi and probably many other japanese people are very sick of! (though i'd bet Tak Shindo called it something else)
Avatar 7:49pm
Flash Strap:

What William Holden was ever doing presenting a record like this, I don't know
Avatar 7:51pm
Flash Strap:

That's interesting C. He did call it something else but I'd have to check which one it was
Avatar 7:51pm
ndbob:

I always wondered bout that Evan
Avatar 7:54pm
Flash Strap:

He's making such a scampish face too. He looks like a total heel on that cover: assets.rootsvinylguide.com...
Avatar 7:56pm
hyde:

William Holden starred in The World of Suzie Wong in 1960 about an American who moves to Hong Kong. I wonder if that had something to do with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
How could something so Wong, be so white?
Avatar 7:56pm
Flash Strap:

Huh, I bet so. That's the sort of thing that happened. Mitchum's calypso album has a similar story
Avatar 7:57pm
Flash Strap:

oh haa ha ha! Douglas you slay me
Avatar 7:57pm
ndbob:

excellent show Evan - catch the rest on hte archive as usual
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
coelacanth:

Flash...maybe it'd be more accurate to say that Shindo track is quite different than the Miyagi song, but still enough the same that it's a bit beyond "derivative"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm
coelacanth:

Doug's here to bring the punishment!
Avatar 8:01pm
Flash Strap:

I wonder if he's incorporating a western theme into it, changing it 'round, gettin' all syncretic
Avatar 8:02pm
Flash Strap:

talk about album art, by the way. This one's a doozy: lpcoverlover.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm

I didn't know about this when I did my semi-recent orgasm set!
Avatar 8:14pm
Flash Strap:

man, there are lots more orgasms on this record in case you ever do another one. I'll send it to you if you remind me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Uncle Michael:

I pretty much exhausted the oeuvre, or so I thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
Uncle Michael:

The title song from Suzy Wong by Tommy Edwards is sublime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
coelacanth:

Flash, that was hyde who brought that info!
Avatar 8:21pm
hyde:

haha, it could so easily have been coelacanth too, though
Avatar 8:23pm
hyde:

whoa, this is some uptempo exotica
Avatar 8:23pm
Flash Strap:

Sorry guys!
Avatar 8:24pm
Flash Strap:

This one really reminds me of the jarring artificiality of Magne's tropical Fantasy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
melinda:

There was something in that last one that sounded like an oncoming train.
Avatar 8:26pm
Flash Strap:

definitely! the old jungle train trope!
Avatar 8:27pm
Flash Strap:

Damn, these birds! So eery!
Avatar 8:28pm
Flash Strap:

such a great Quiet Village, my god
Avatar 8:30pm
Flash Strap:

I am really excited by this record, I'd never heard it until very recently and it's just such exquisite exotica. instant new favorite
Avatar 8:34pm
Flash Strap:

is that thumb piano AND tabla?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
coelacanth:

this whole set is pretty sweet
Avatar 8:36pm

hope I can keep it that way. I'm really enjoying it myself, obviously
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm

This Wilson cut is a fun one. Enjoying this set as well!!

Avatar 8:52pm
Flash Strap:

Fred's just whistlin', Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
coelacanth:

this whole time i've been trying to do some funky treatment, using gimp, to that party picture over there (<). it's not working so well because the texture is such that the bucket-fill only fills a few pixels at a time.
there really are other things i should be doing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
melinda:

Far out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm

Oh yeah, I know Indian Love Call. It is theremin-like, indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm

This program is like mmmm ganja, for the ears!
Avatar 9:00pm
hyde:

some day this show will really only be two hours, and i'll be so disappointed
Avatar 9:03pm
Flash Strap:

God forbid I ever have a show following me, I'd be so crippled by the hard deadline.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm
coelacanth:

that happened once,hyde- on a day that i squirmed in at 8:50. sad indeed.
Avatar 9:05pm
Flash Strap:

You guys are the reason I always tell myself it's ok to go long. you make me feel like it's preferred

I like it when shows go overtime.
Avatar 9:07pm

as the days get shorter i can check in earlier and earlier; it's still a treat when you go long!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm

Especially when it involves someone named Hash Brown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm

I saw the Harlem Globetrotters in the early 80s. They were a big deal then.
Avatar 9:16pm
Flash Strap:

haha I'll never forget seeing them. blew my 2nd grade mind
Avatar 9:17pm
hyde:

@melinda ha, i saw them about then too. sadly, i had my money on the washington generals.
Avatar 9:17pm
Flash Strap:

Happy birthday Peter Falk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm
listener james from westwood:

Didn't see them live, but I remember being jazzed when they appeared on the TV show "The White Shadow."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm
coelacanth:

when the globetrotters were on was one of the fairly rare events that the whole family got together for tv.
Avatar 9:18pm
hyde:

Peter Falk is the greatest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
listener james from westwood:

I always have time for typewriters used as musical instruments.
Avatar 9:20pm

Murder by the Book is a great Columbo ep too. Directed by Steven Spielberg! (also, cinematography by the great Russell Metty)

Peter Falk will Live forever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm

Good evening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm

I remember The White Shadow, it had good theme music.
Avatar 9:21pm

Is it even possible to have a character drive a car that messed up on TV these days? Columbo was the best!
Avatar 9:22pm
Flash Strap:

Columbo is really the greatest show ever of all time. I am sure of that
Avatar 9:23pm
Flash Strap:

that peugeot is a wonder
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
melinda:

My memories of Columbo are pretty limited, I need to Netflix that. Everyone seems to love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
melinda:

Jesus Christ, that steel guitar apologizing is bizarrely wonderful!
Avatar 9:24pm
Flash Strap:

Oh you should. It holds up and then some. Watch the one where Jack Cassidy plays a magician, that's my all-time. That or the one where Robert Culp is a subliminal messages ad expert
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Minnesota Jeff:

Hard to imagine many of his busts landed in convictions though.
Avatar 9:25pm
Flash Strap:

It's such a weird sound! TOO weird for whatever its audience would have been, I figure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
melinda:

That sounds like a great role for Robert Culp. I liked him in I Spy, glad I watched that before the Cosby stuff came out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
Uncle Michael:

Thanks Evan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
listener james from westwood:

Thanks a ton for show and especially the Shindo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm

No Jive Bombers in that set!

Great sounds, exotic and otherwise. Thanks Mr Strap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm
coelacanth:

Mr.Drake was Exquisite on the All Things Must Pass album though.
Avatar 9:28pm
hyde:

the Robert Culp Columbo ep is fantastic. I'm also a big fan of Étude In Black, with John Cassavetes as a jerkhole conductor and cameos by Myrna Loy and Blythe Danner.

Thanks Flash!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Uncle Michael:

There's more than one Culp episode!
Avatar 9:30pm

Wow! You guys are bringing back some serious Columbo memories. Gonna have to revisit it soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm

i probably saw most columbo episodes but i think i'd like to refresh my memories, a lot!

Thanks Evan Brilliant as always!
later on folks!
Avatar 9:31pm

Etude in black is one of the very very best indeed. Falk and cassavettes are really electric together.

All the Culp episodes are really good, but the subliminal messages one is the best

Wish I had dropped some Jive bombers in there!
