All this Hell music reminds me of years ago when my workplace closed for the week of Christmas. Come the new year, I returned to find that the cleaners had taken my cassette player.
They were welcome to it, but couldn't they at least have removed and left behind the ROIR "Fun Hunt" tape? I never did replace it.

Not to be pedantic, but I feel Richard Hell is up there with the greats, in regards to his skills as a story teller. His use of the language is stunning and very fucking accurate.

Thank you, Todd and Richard.

Hair style defines commitment.

I grew up on top 40 radio. Differences in styles in the late 70s was fascinating. I grew to like the Talking Head and The Clash, even though when I bought thier albums, I was looking for somrthing else. It was challenging and really fucking interesting. Having made the commitment to the vinyl, I'd listen to them all, even if I was lukewarm to the music.

The writing has let me get to know Mr. Hell a little bit better. He's not just a caricature performing. We have some insight into who is was and--perhaps more importantly, in a weird way--who he became.
Avatar 4:50pm

Steve They weren't mentioned by name, only referenced in the general sense of the death of rocknroll via corporate influences, proggy Southern rock overkill

Love this Quine quote: I think Blank Generation holds up pretty well. You listen to that with headphones and there's a lot going on there with the guitars-it's the product of a lot of fighting.
Avatar 4:53pm
David Shortell:

At a Red Bank party a decade ago, a spikey-haired youngster asked the host what band he was playing (it was a song off "Blank Generation").
After he left the room I remarked to one of my generational peers, "Isn't it ironic that this kid who never heard of the Voidoids is sporting a hairstyle that Richard Hell invented?"

Great combo of Interviewee & Interviewer. Hurrah.
Re Punk being like Blues - that is exactly what Iggy said about his earliest intentions too: he realized (in Detroit, that close to Chicago) that the Blues had been Mastered by venerable old African-Americans - & he'd need to find his own young White suburban version of it...a problem Beefheart & many others of course set about addressing...& Lennon of course remarking that Blues is - a Chair to *Sit In* - not a *design* for a better chair...

Titus Andronicus rehashed the myth of Philomela --whose tongue rapists removed to cover their tracks, only to be incriminated when Philomela wove a tapestry that depicted their heinous acts. Shakespeare went further by having the rapists cut off her hands as well.
The Philomela myth was reused again in the Ellen James charcter from "The World According to Garp".

Todd: I think that your interview style is outstanding, and as I have noticed at times with M Shelley, too, you catch your subjects off guard because you are clearly so well versed in the topic and the individual - they do not expect you to be as focused and connected with them, or to have done your research so well. Keep it coming
