Favoriting Explorers Room with Flash Strap: Playlist from November 12, 2015 Favoriting

Flash Strap's avatar View Flash Strap's profile Favoriting

This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Cosmic Jokers, perhaps? (I kinda hope not, because I have to go offline and run errands.)
Avatar 7:04pm
ndbob:

greetings Carmichael and Melinda and Dean
Avatar 7:04pm
hyde:

is this where the Jaki Liebezeit fan club meets?
Avatar 7:05pm
Flash Strap:

no jokers tonight, i'm afraid. my cosmic jokers files asre all such low bitrate i'm disinclined to play them on air. need to replace ASAP
Avatar 7:05pm
Flash Strap:

Hyde: yes!
  7:06pm
Dean:

Better than mine. Mine had no bitrate at all, being vinyl. Until I unloaded them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm
melinda:

Off to a great start!
Avatar 7:07pm
Flash Strap:

well that vinyl beats any bitrate in my book but hate to hear they've left your collection. hope their sale funded the acquisition of even better records
Avatar 7:07pm
Flash Strap:

thanks melinda, i'm a huge nut about this track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
melinda:

There's a lot going on in it.
Avatar 7:13pm
Flash Strap:

i never understood why this record wasn't more of a classic in synth/krautrock/psych circles, i think it's terrific
Avatar 7:15pm
northguineahills:

Actually, I've never heard of Richard Schneider.
Avatar 7:17pm
Flash Strap:

he's hit or miss from the stuff i've heard, but worked with Liebezeit a fair amount and has some crazy good choice cuts
Avatar 7:17pm
Flash Strap:

also, hello, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm

Time to drink the aural beer of the Strappist Monk!
Avatar 7:20pm
Flash Strap:

evening Doug! mighty FINE evening to you sir!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
Doug Schulkind:

Hey Flash, you are not connected to the stream! It is playing the continuous queue of tracks just now!
Avatar 7:23pm
hyde:

ack, is it an Art Ensemble tune? because that was driving me crazy!
Avatar 7:23pm
Flash Strap:

am i still off?
Avatar 7:24pm
hyde:

yeah, it sounds jazzy still
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Doug Schulkind:

Julius Hemphill's "The Hard Blues" is airing right now. Killer track, but not Flash Strap.

No, Flash, the next track (Dorothy Ashby on harp) just started up.
Avatar 7:25pm
Flash Strap:

well, i'm connected on my end!
Avatar 7:25pm
hyde:

oh, it was Hemphill. I knew I recognized it, but I thought it was some cover.
  7:25pm
Lynne:

Nope. You're not online right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Doug Schulkind:

Are you hearing yourself over the Internet, or just a local monitor?
Avatar 7:25pm
Flash Strap:

was i ever on?
  7:26pm
Lynne:

I thought so at the beginning, but I haven't heard you talk tonight.
Avatar 7:26pm
Flash Strap:

no, i'm not hearing myself online, but my nicecast is reading that i'm connected and online
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Doug Schulkind:

I just got home and opened your playlist and started listening at 7:20 (ET).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
Doug Schulkind:

Maybe close Nicecast and restart that machine, the reconnect?
Avatar 7:28pm
Flash Strap:

well, what the hell
Avatar 7:29pm
Flash Strap:

how's that?
Avatar 7:29pm
hyde:

that sounds like the synthy stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Doug Schulkind:

OK, THAT sounds more like it. Whatever was just playing on the stream faded and now some electronic loveliness is happening.
  7:29pm
Lynne:

Talk soon so we'll know.
  7:30pm
Lynne:

There you are!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Doug Schulkind:

The automated stream should be playing Ray Barretto right now, and this does not sound like any Ray Barretto record I know.

And THERE is are the dulcet cords of Sir Strap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Doug Schulkind:

The weird thing now is that the metadata reading out on iTunes is the tracks from the stream and not your playlist. I think this is a bizarre glitch that has nothing to do with your end, Flash Strap. I am going to make your playlist unlive and then live again to see if the metadata kicks in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Doug Schulkind:

OK, turning off and on your playlist seems to have done the trick.
Avatar 7:34pm
Flash Strap:

Thanks, Doug. I was pretty sure I hadn't screwed anything up on my end, but can never be TOO confident about that
Avatar 7:36pm
Flash Strap:

Man, so no one got to hear that Schneider track? and to think i've been saving it for a special moment!
Avatar 7:37pm
Flash Strap:

Thanks for patching me up, Dr. Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Dorothy:

No prob, Tin Man. (Thank goodness you don't have a tin ear.)
Avatar 7:41pm
hyde:

heh, oh well. we'll have to go back to the archive to check the Scneider. I feel dumb because I knew I recognized the track but I thought it was Art Ensemble so I was googling "Richard Schneider" + "fata morgana" + "art ensemble" and not finding anything and it was making me nuts. I never considered that it was coming from the stream.
Avatar 7:43pm
Flash Strap:

what a mindfuck. i would have been going NUTS in your shoes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Doug Schulkind:

And you'll get those precious moments back, hyde.
Avatar 7:45pm
Flash Strap:

yeah, when you die they just return to you all those moments, wasted in pointless confusion, in a little parcel, and you can use them to buy hard candies and ice cream at the sweets shop in heaven
Avatar 7:47pm
Flash Strap:

this is one of my favorite west african records ever. i love how wacky it gets
Avatar 7:47pm
hyde:

oh, that's cool. i was gonna sue the drummer some stream for mental anguish, but i'll settle for suckers in heaven
Avatar 7:49pm
ndbob:

great one here - even better then "Fidel and Raul"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
Doug Schulkind:

A fave over in these parts, too!
Avatar 7:56pm
Flash Strap:

I'm in a long-form mood tonight. Love a track that luxuriates, builds, repetitions. tracks that are born, live a full life, and die while you listen
Avatar 7:57pm
Flash Strap:

this guitar is

ON FIRE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
Doug Schulkind:

I adore your playlist art, Flash. The reflection that dances across our astronaut's face shield is a goofy wonder.
Avatar 7:58pm
Jeff:

Um, oops. I believe all your confusion and heartache earlier about what was playing where is due to some stuff I was doing. My most abject apologies.

In more-fun news... everybody who's hearing Herr Doktor Professor Flash Strap now is doing so via a shiny new Icecast server on a shiny new computer in a shiny new datacenter in Noo York City. I want to see if it manages not to be plagued with as many funny little network interruptions as our older primary stream server. (So what do I do first? Mess up a show. Sigh. I thought I looked at the schedule...)
Avatar 7:59pm
ndbob:

excellent show Evan! catch the rest on the archive
Avatar 8:00pm
Flash Strap:

haha all is forgiven Jeff. thanks for bringing us into the bright new future. nobody said the new world would come at no cost
Avatar 8:00pm
Flash Strap:

adios, NDroberto
Avatar 8:04pm
ndbob:

ah actually I can listen a little longer than usual it turns out:)
Avatar 8:04pm
Flash Strap:

thanks doug! I just found it on google while looking for something entirely. I think it's by a gif artist under the handle "kotutohum"

if you can believe it
Avatar 8:05pm
Flash Strap:

glad to keep ya bob
Avatar 8:17pm
Flash Strap:

This is such a weird, wonderful album–do we all already know it?
Avatar 8:22pm
hyde:

nope, this is new to me
Avatar 8:23pm
ndbob:

and now I do have to go
thanks again Evan!
Avatar 8:23pm

bye for now bob

Avatar 8:28pm
Flash Strap:

and up next, get ready for a REALLY good track
Avatar 8:33pm
Flash Strap:

might be my #1 Lonnie Liston Smith, here
Avatar 8:35pm
hyde:

it's great. sounds similar to the Gato Barbieri stuff around then. Smith plays on some of that, right?
Avatar 8:35pm
Flash Strap:

yeah, he's all over Bolivia, which is coincidentally my fave Gato stuff
Avatar 8:36pm
Flash Strap:

though Gato never got that unabashedly trippy
Avatar 8:39pm
Ike:

Late arrival but playlist thusfar looks/sounds great Flash!
Avatar 8:52pm
northguineahills:

What about the band Juju? Their album, "a message from mazambique (1972)" is damn good, although by the late 70s they headed into discoesque territory,
Avatar 8:55pm
Flash Strap:

I need to hear that one, NGH, I don't think I have it!
Avatar 8:55pm
Flash Strap:

Great to have you here, LD!

Avatar 8:58pm
northguineahills:

Cool!
Avatar 8:59pm
Flash Strap:

I don't have that one either LD. I'm digging in and looking fo rthem both now

Hello there, Diminutive Daniel!

found juju, not divination yet

Ike:

I just ate way too much pita bread. It's irresistible. It's the fluffiest whole wheat pita bread ever. It's fluffier than a poodle having a bad hair day. Well, maybe not that fluffy. Anyway, this music goes well with fluffy pita bread.
Avatar 9:06pm
hyde:

thanks man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm
melinda:

Thanks for the cosmic sounds!
Avatar 9:08pm
Flash Strap:

Thank YOU, Hyde and Melinda
