Much of the charm of Ward Marston's digital transcriptions of 78s of classical vocal recitals is a function of his refusal to use noise reduction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am
Guido from Cologne:

Cream played the hospital bills for Skip so to say
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am
Marcel M:

The straight ahead white boy electric blues is just boring. Once it got taken into "hard rock" territory it became its own unique thing. But that in-between period is pretty lame.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 11:09am
Brian in UK:

Hey Joe & Amanda.
Crackles make it real.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am
Guido from Cologne:

Roughly said:
Electric Blues tends to repete over and over rules and schemas while original Country Blues often enough doesn't care about rules at all. Skip James is a good example.
  11:10am
KP:

Cream's "I'm So Glad" is much more Jack Bruce than Eric Clapton.
  11:11am
Dean:

Gotta disagree. I mean, "Goin' Home" is as white, virtuosic, electric as you can get, but it works. And then there's Cedell Davis's work, which wouldn't translate well to acoustic. I think the problem with a lot of electric blues is in the engineering. The instruments need space and air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am
Joe McG:

I knew we'd get you going with this dissing of British blues! :)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 11:12am
Brian in UK:

Clapton is NOT god, he's a very naughty boy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am
Marcel M:

I wasn't trying to imply white people can't play the blues, I was refering it more as a "genre." I feel that during that time it was pure emulation until a unique sound was found. Lots of black blues musicians played eletric guitar as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am
Marcel M:

Clapton's THING with the blues was keeping it pure... which is kind of respectable in a way but its also the reason I never liked him. Always though it was boring. Not pushing the envelope.
👻 Swag For Life Member 11:18am
tadpoles:

Just a thought - it took the British - Alexis Korner / John Mayall etc - to introduce the likes of Skip James to white America. Should have been the other way around.
  11:19am
Dean:

I heard you right, Marcel M. Ten Years After is a white band, but more importantly they represent a genre, an approach to emphasizing the blues in rock.

Clapton:blues::Wynton Marsalis:jazz?

Nick Drake is perhaps a bad example of the Nick Drake myth. He wasn't all that unknown during the mid-to-late-'70s, and it seems to me there has always been a murmur of a conversation about his recordings.
