This might be a bit different from what you feel about her but I have been wondering why she smiles so often even when she's saying things like "Yes, nothing but disappointment" (which could be where that too much sweetness comes from.) She's certainly not presenting independent/rebel type characters, but there's some strange strength in her, kinda like when you are powerless at least you can take that difficulties with a smile.

	5:43pm Jason: Oh, I agree! Just my own little bias. I think my favourite performance by her is in Late Autumn / 秋日和, maybe because she is older then, and has more gravity, especially as otherwise the film is quite light.

	6:20pm Listener142985: RIP, Setsuoko Hara. The Noriko trilogy is one of the peak achievements in film, and she is the luminous core of all three films. Those who love cinema and have not seen these films should at least see Early Spring. The scene just before she is married when she thanks her father for letting her care for him is so deeply moving. Anyone who can watch it without choking up should have their heart checked; it may have stopped working.

	6:39pm Mayuko: I think so, Dave B, probably that's why I feel familiar with her, that she also is living the same reality in a not too different way as my grandmothers did. That she's not a hero, but simply a human. But I'm not sure exactly what these mean to me yet.

But everyone in those films, not just the actors but the technical/creative crew, were working at such a high level because they loved and respected Ozu so much. Roger Ebert said this, and I think it's well-said: 'It is impossible to select Ozu's best film because his work is so much of a piece, and almost always to the same high standard.' Any chance of tracking down the drinking song from the bar scene in Tokyo Story? Love that one.

Your show got me thinking about my grandmothers, very different women. One had 8 kids in a rural setting, the other had two from different fathers and was involved in the "resistance". I never really knew either, they died before I knew what to ask. Not their fault, it took me so long to figure it out
