	10:33pm JakeGould: @Mayuko: Great! Higher quality Fembot parts. @DanielBlumin: Yup, they rereleased “Star Wars” in movie theaters in 1981. Those were pre-VCRs as common things days. That was the best way to catch it again. And I hated “Return of the Jedi” when I saw it opening weekend in 1983. Just cutesy pandering teddy bears and junk. The thing with “The Empire Strikes Back” is it was a more mature story. Then they decided that didn’t work (?!?) despite critical acclaim and went the “Disney” route which why the sale to Disney makes all the sense in the world.

I mean “The Matrix” blew my mind when it came out because it was such a new idea on screen and it was years since I saw a new idea like that.

For me I went to see “The Force Awakens” simply because I had the day off, the theater near me still had impulse buy tickets up for sale for the first show on opening day… And why not? It wasn’t a bad movie, but it affirmed to me what every film after “Return of the Jedi” was: It’s just childish pandering without any attempt to be mature or grow the characters. It’s like whatever the next film is you already know there is a gajillion things on screen that were made just to create new toys and junk. That really was not the case of the 1977 original or even “The Empire Strikes Back.” Those two films were like maturish young adult science fiction. These new films just pander to preteens and teens with no signs of maturity.

	11:17pm JakeGould: @brendanswfmuaccount: “The Force Awakens” is targeting a very specific market: People who saw the originals 30+ years ago and their children, nieces and nephews. There’s something fairly “evil” about the marketing of this film since it’s clearly a tentpole designed to prop up the sale of more ancillary product. Meaning there are plot points in this film that are simply not addressed… Unless to decide to go out and spend more money on comics and novels. I find this really bad; it’s not a movie it’s an indoctrination into a brand.
	11:17pm Andrew Waterloo: I thought Force Awakens allowed for a bit more depth in the newer characters and chewbacca while phoning in Han and Leia. They could have given some personality to the bad guys in Uniform
	11:19pm JakeGould: @AndrewWaterloo: I was very happy to see Chewbacca get more depth, but the film is simply not self-contained to it’s own world and clearly something that is selling an eco-system of merch. Including more Wookiee items.

	11:31pm Dean: @JakeGould: Gin's my preference, but it's not usually in the mix. I don't hate "Star Wars," but I do resent having to wait in line for what seemed to me to be a half-assed effort. Give me an afternoon with Lucas (or Spielberg or Hitchcock or Bergman or Fellini, etc.) and I'll educate them about cameras and projection of images.
	11:31pm Andrew Waterloo: Tarantino is a lot like George Lucas. Their both big on nostalgia and they both tend to stuck on their own obsessions. The difference though is Lucas likes his mat paintings, and Tarantino likes his verbal assaults and ultra violence in atypical settings.

	11:35pm JakeGould: @AndrewWaterloo: George Lucas made exactly 3 good films, “THX 1138,” “American Graffiti” and “Star Wars.” And with “Star Wars” he figured out he created the goose that laid the golden egg and that was it. Did you see his Charlie Rose interview where he said he sold his films to “white slavers” and—despite his billions in wealth—claims he only continued to make “Star Wars” films because Hollywood would not let him make anything else? The guy is literally nuts. He’s friends with DePalma, Coppola and Scorsese and he says something like that about being denied the ability to make non-“Star Wars” films? Loony.
	11:37pm Dean: My favorite directors: Kubrick (partly nostalgia, partly a true admiration for his understanding that film has nothing to do with acting), Diane Kurys (lovely stuff, very little happens), and, unashamedly, whoever directed "Blazing Saddles," which is the very pinnacle of cinematography. I can't imagine anything better fitting the medium.
	11:39pm Dean: So, weirdly, at least two directors whose names being K-U...
	11:39pm JakeGould: @Dean: So you mean Mel Brooks in the case of “Blazing Saddles?” But Kubrick I’m sick of. So sterile and perfect but utterly soulless; h’s a director I liked in college but past that I can’t stand him.

	11:45pm Ike: We can agree on Kubrick, @Jake -- of the Kubrick films I've seen, the only one I like is "Dr. Strangelove", because his characters are such awful, wretched, appalling human beings that I don't even want to spend time w/them unless they're being fully mocked in a 100% satirical context. All his characters are soulless and horrible. In "2001" it's clear Kubrick likes the murdering HAL a hell of a lot more than the humans, who aren't fortunate enough to get much in the way of characterization.
	11:46pm Dean: Yes, @JakeGould, and I completely sympathize with the "soulless" characterization. I liked him pre-college as well as post- (saw 2001 at Hollywood's Cineramadome in '78), and I still enjoy 2001, Strangelove, Barry Lyndon, and Clockwork Orange. The Shining, however, was an utter letdown, largely because Nicholson is such a dick. But the soulless factor is important: consider Ryan O'Neill in BL. Kubrick must have chosen him precisely because he is incapable of acting. And it works marvelously. The guy's a placeholder. Any high school thespian would have performed better than him. But strong performance on film 1) is nearly impossible, and 2) runs counter to the point of film, which is to splash projections on a wall.
	11:48pm Bill C: I always liked Tarkovsky and Michael Powell. Also the composition of Michael Mann and Terrence Malick
	11:49pm Dean: OTOH, I remember standing in line at the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd. for the premier of The Shining. Two circumstances stand out: Todd Rundgren was also in line, and I first learned that Ian Curtis had committed suicide. The latter pissed me off, because I was looking forward to hearing Joy Division live in LA.

	11:51pm Bill C: I understand what you are saying but Peter Sellers and Malcolm McDowell did stand out. So did Vincent D'Onofrio.
	11:54pm Dean: @JakeGould: Not in the least, obviously. @Bill C.: Yes, PS and MM sort of mess up my theory. VD, however, really...? He was Full Metal Jacket's Ryan O'Neil, as far as I'm concerned. Knows nothing about acting.
	11:55pm JakeGould: I like John Cassavetes, Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Robert Bresson and Goddard. I see any of their films and I like what I have seen even if I hate the film.

	10:33pm JakeGould: @Mayuko: Great! Higher quality Fembot parts. @DanielBlumin: Yup, they rereleased “Star Wars” in movie theaters in 1981. Those were pre-VCRs as common things days. That was the best way to catch it again. And I hated “Return of the Jedi” when I saw it opening weekend in 1983. Just cutesy pandering teddy bears and junk. The thing with “The Empire Strikes Back” is it was a more mature story. Then they decided that didn’t work (?!?) despite critical acclaim and went the “Disney” route which why the sale to Disney makes all the sense in the world.

It wasn’t a bad movie, but it affirmed to me what every film after “Return of the Jedi” was: It’s just childish pandering without any attempt to be mature or grow the characters. It’s like whatever the next film is you already know there is a gajillion things on screen that were made just to create new toys and junk. That really was not the case of the 1977 original or even “The Empire Strikes Back.” Those two films were like maturish young adult science fiction. These new films just pander to preteens and teens with no signs of maturity.

There’s something fairly “evil” about the marketing of this film since it’s clearly a tentpole designed to prop up the sale of more ancillary product. Meaning there are plot points in this film that are simply not addressed… Unless to decide to go out and spend more money on comics and novels. I find this really bad; it’s not a movie it’s an indoctrination into a brand.

Give me an afternoon with Lucas (or Spielberg or Hitchcock or Bergman or Fellini, etc.) and I'll educate them about cameras and projection of images.
	11:31pm Andrew Waterloo: Tarantino is a lot like George Lucas. Their both big on nostalgia and they both tend to stuck on their own obsessions. The difference though is Lucas likes his mat paintings, and Tarantino likes his verbal assaults and ultra violence in atypical settings.

	11:35pm JakeGould: @AndrewWaterloo: George Lucas made exactly 3 good films, “THX 1138,” “American Graffiti” and “Star Wars.” And with “Star Wars” he figured out he created the goose that laid the golden egg and that was it. Did you see his Charlie Rose interview where he said he sold his films to “white slavers” and—despite his billions in wealth—claims he only continued to make “Star Wars” films because Hollywood would not let him make anything else? The guy is literally nuts. He’s friends with DePalma, Coppola and Scorsese and he says something like that about being denied the ability to make non-“Star Wars” films? Loony.
	11:37pm Dean: My favorite directors: Kubrick (partly nostalgia, partly a true admiration for his understanding that film has nothing to do with acting), Diane Kurys (lovely stuff, very little happens), and, unashamedly, whoever directed "Blazing Saddles," which is the very pinnacle of cinematography. I can't imagine anything better fitting the medium.

	11:45pm Ike: We can agree on Kubrick, @Jake -- of the Kubrick films I've seen, the only one I like is "Dr. Strangelove", because his characters are such awful, wretched, appalling human beings that I don't even want to spend time w/them unless they're being fully mocked in a 100% satirical context. All his characters are soulless and horrible. In "2001" it's clear Kubrick likes the murdering HAL a hell of a lot more than the humans, who aren't fortunate enough to get much in the way of characterization.
	11:46pm Dean: Yes, @JakeGould, and I completely sympathize with the "soulless" characterization. I liked him pre-college as well as post- (saw 2001 at Hollywood's Cineramadome in '78), and I still enjoy 2001, Strangelove, Barry Lyndon, and Clockwork Orange. The Shining, however, was an utter letdown, largely because Nicholson is such a dick. But the soulless factor is important: consider Ryan O'Neill in BL. Kubrick must have chosen him precisely because he is incapable of acting. And it works marvelously. The guy's a placeholder. Any high school thespian would have performed better than him. But strong performance on film 1) is nearly impossible, and 2) runs counter to the point of film, which is to splash projections on a wall.

Two circumstances stand out: Todd Rundgren was also in line, and I first learned that Ian Curtis had committed suicide. The latter pissed me off, because I was looking forward to hearing Joy Division live in LA.
