I did not know this, but "Wendigo Syndrome" is when you still crave human flesh after a famine, even though there is other food available. Yow.

The tribes of the Great Lakes were convinced that once you partook in long pork, you would end up a Wendigo. They were very assiduous in discouraging this practice

Happy Monday folks! So new year and 2 weeks later, we can safely spoil “Star Wars∏ right?
  4:34pm
Brainiac:

JJ Abrams already spoiled it for everyone.
  4:36pm
JakeGould:

Brainiac: Some 20th Century Fox exec spoiled it in 1978 when he said, “George, the first movie is a complete storyline but one word for you… Sequel!” That first sequel (“Empire Strikes Back”) is great, but the desire for a cash grab spelled the beginning of the end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
Scott Williams:

go nuts, pals! spoil away...
Avatar 4:37pm
Cecile:

Actually, George said in the 70s he was going to lay out his entire Star Wars world in 9 movies. He said later he regretted saying this very much.
  4:37pm
Brainiac:

Hey Jake, good point. I remember smirking when I heard he "always conceived it as a trilogy."
Avatar 4:38pm
Cecile:

He actually conceived it as nine films, before he learned the phrase "underpromise and overdeliver".

Man, this is just great. Cavern of Anti-Matter. Daniel Blumin strikes again!

That's where "Episode IV" comes from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm
Scott Williams:

Blumey is a total mensch, and what a set of ears on him!
  4:44pm
JakeGould:

@Cecile: The 9 films, 12 films and all that nonsense changes over the years. The general way I look at that 1977 film is he had a hit with “American Graffiti” and had these notes on “Star Wars.” They looked at it, humored him and basically said, “Just make one film.” And the rest is backstory. Also, I have a great quote from Gary Kurtz—the new interest sparked my research into 1977 to 1980 Star Wars lore—that really is eye opening of you think “Episode V’ has weight.
Avatar 4:45pm
Cecile:

Of course it does. But don't think that Lucas wasn't just as happy to grub for the money once SW became a hit.
Avatar 🧩 Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Who wants some leftover eggnog? This stuff is going to go bad soon.
  4:46pm
JakeGould:

@Cecile: From issue 18 of Starlog Magazine (Yup, I went there): “So we’ve been toying with the idea of ignoring the numbers completely. Instead, we’ll give each movie episode a unique title. I mean, if we had to give each film its true number in the series, this movie would be called Episode Five: The Empire Strikes Back. The first film would be called Episode Four. Can you imagine how complicated it would get? If we released a story like that publicly through a press release, thousands of people would be totally confused.” archive.org...
  4:46pm
JakeGould:

That quote is from his producer at the time, Gary Kurtz.
Avatar 4:46pm
Cecile:

hahahhaahhaa, and he went ahead and did it anyway.
  4:47pm
neil who is WILD, man:

@Jake-Ah, Starlog! I remember it well!! From the late 70's and early 80's....I wanted to be a special effects Matte Painter...
Avatar 4:47pm
Cecile:

I also don't refer to any of them as episodes. I just pretend there are four movies.
Avatar 4:49pm
Cecile:

My husband had a complete set from those days, but left them too close to an open window while we were away. They got quite water damaged.

Matte Painters are awesome. I get all geeked out when I see good Matte Painting. The first Captain America movie had great ones.
  4:50pm
JakeGould:

@Cecile: Also, Phil Tippett, the stop motion animation artist who worked on all 3 films has this great quote that explicitly explains how George Lucas was looking at “Return of the Jedi.” He overheard a conversation with George Lucas and director Richard Marquand that went like this, “, "George, I don't totally get where we need to go with this picture." And George said, "Well, did you see Benji?" "No George, I didn't see Benji." "Well, what we're doing now is kind of like a cross between Benji and what we did on Empire Strikes Back."” www.movies.com...
Avatar 4:51pm
Cecile:

oh, dear Lord. that is new to me. And Benji was an awful movie.
  4:51pm
JakeGould:

@neil and @Cecile: I present you the Starlog digital archive on the Internet Archive. archive.org...
Avatar 4:52pm
Cecile:

niiiiice
Avatar 4:53pm
Cecile:

hahahhaha I have this.
  4:54pm
JakeGould:

@Cecile: Yup. I am pretty good at research as an adult, but from 1977 to 1980 I was a kid and had no idea how to research any of this. As an adult I read that old Gary Kurtz interview which comes from 1978 and then found that Phil Tippett interview stiff and in my mind it was a like book literally closed. It seals the fact that my enjoyment of the first two films is 100% valid: First film was unexpected hit, the next film was an unexpectedly successful sequel and by the time “Return of the Jedi” came around they just began thinking of ways to create a franchise at the expense of telling decent stories. In this light, the fact that “The Empire Strikes Back” was so mature seems like an aberration; they should have shoved more teddy bears and extended space blues numbers in that one.
  4:55pm
JakeGould:

Okay,m enough “Star Wars”… But one last thing, Phil Tippett’s opinion on the CGI nonsense added to the “Special Editions” was a simple 2 word response: “They’re shit.’ BRAVO!
Avatar 4:56pm
Cecile:

and yet, there is some very good stuff in "Jedi". Which is more than I can say for the three awful prequels.
  4:57pm
JakeGould:

@Cecile: There was some good stuff. But to me, I just like the speeder bike chase through the forest and the final space battle. Past that, I can’t care.
Avatar 4:57pm
Cecile:

YES. We kept our old VHS tapes around forever for the reason.
  4:58pm
JakeGould:

Anyway… Anyone here excited about the year of the Monkey?
