Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Thanks for listening to this episode of The Dusty Show on WFMU. Originally, I had intended to go to Bowie's residence on Lafayette St. to interview those there who'd come to place flowers, light candles, and pay their respects. When I got there, it somehow felt ghoulish of me to interrupt people under such circumstances, so I went home and tried to come up with another plan for the show. I think like a lot of DJ's, I found myself looking for curiosities and odd tracks that wouldn't be played by everyone else this week. I found a few such things; the Johnny Cougar, the Bowie performance after 9/11 ... I had a fear coming into the studio. What to say about the whole thing? I wanted to keep it respectful. Somehow, though, when I arrived, I felt an energy upon seeing Fabio. And when I heard Cracked Actor, I realized that Bowie would want us all to rock to it. It was great taking calls, though I felt I was a little rude to a few people, cutting them off and turning them down. I think I was very nervous. I did NOT want to come off as flippant, by any means because, here's the thing ... I LOVE David Bowie. I hope you know that. I just couldn't be funereal, because when I get on the radio, it makes me happy and I want to share it. I had been bummed all week, but Fab and FMU and the listeners picked me right up. Totally fun. However ... reality is .... Bowie is gone and it sucks. Sucks! I have dug him since '72 and all the way through. I never found a singing voice of my own in the bands I was in. I could never get the Bowie out of it, which is to say, his influence was so pervasive that I could never shake it - and just in these last few days, I have been realizing what a far out lyricist he was. Yes, was. Weird to use past-tense. I love Bowie. I will miss him big-time. NYC will miss him. I was proud to live in his NYC. John Lennon. Andy Warhol. and on and on. Not sure where I am headed with this. Like many of you, I am still sorting out my feelings about David Bowie's passing. I wish I could wake up and it wouldn't be true. Take care all of you, and tune in next week. THANK YOU for listening. Seriously. I appreciate it and I have so much fun making Dusties for you, and being part of the TNP, and FMU - Always remember ... the fantastic ... David Bowie. Natalie Cole ... Alan Rickman ... Angus Scrimm ... etc. CPNYC1151699RIPDB |
