"The hottest day of the last summer of the eighties" is an incredibly specific ending point.

I think I have MAYBE 45 minutes of '79 hiphop on vinyl, although I've never been accused of being a hiphop specialist.
  7:07pm
David in Cleveland:

Should be an interesting show. I moved from the country to Cleveland.. was mesmerized by rap in mid '80s.. BDP, Public Enemy. Saw Black Sheep open for English rock band James.. that was super cool. Early rap was silly (Dana Dane) and serious (Grandmaster Flash)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
Gary:

Impressive, NGH!

Sam Segal:

Listening live from the YMCA treadmill...keep me moving, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
Gary:

One thing I've noticed having gotten recently so immersed, is exactly what you say, David -- conscious rap begins 1980 (we'll be hearing the track, I think), despite a *lot* of party / silly stuff coming out the same time
Avatar 7:09pm
northguineahills:

(mostly 12"s and 45s, although I just found a resissue comp LP [just went through my shelves, as I' was curious])

ok, maybe 45 minutes from '79-'80 (checking the dates now).
Avatar 7:12pm
hyde:

i bought some sugar hill compilation record that had rapper's delight and a bunch of other stuff on it in maybe '80 or 81. that was the first i ever heard of hip hop, then onto pe, de la soul and bdp from there. this all sounds very early 80's white guy college student as i type it out.
  7:13pm
Sam Segal:

Thanks for the plug! Things are off to a hot start.
Avatar 7:14pm
northguineahills:

Outside of a Genesis and a GnR cassette, I never started buying music until '92, I got a late start as most of my friends started when they were 12, and I didn't get the bug until I was well past 16.
  7:14pm
David in Cleveland:

Sampled some P-Funk there I see. Go go (genre of urban music) was popular in DC around this time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm

Okay, NGH, I think you've opened *that* floodgate. My first record I ever bought was American Graffiti. Followed by Yellow Submarine.

@James - Pac Man Fever on cassette...... Perfect.
I've still got that record kicking around somewhere
  7:21pm

I was already starting to lose interest in rap when "Walk this Way" came out.. in'87 started collecting reggae and music of India. I appreciated the collaboration though.

Hmm, first cassette was Genesis "Invisible Touch", cd was Weird Al's "Fat" that I paid way too much for in a mall in Hong Kong, and outside of the Beatle LPs I pilfered from my dad, I believed the first vinyl I bought was a 7" from the FL band Common Thread in '92.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm

It boggles the mind that I hadn't ever heard it before last week. Now, White Lines, that's another story - I remember dancing to it in clubs in San Francisco in the 80s
Avatar 7:41pm
Monica:

During an interview on WFMU, Flash said he was going to melt down all his vinyl to be his casket rather than bequeath the collection to his son.

Was his son a terrible disappointment to him?

  7:44pm
Doug Schulkind:

This is the gold standard right here.
Avatar 7:45pm

Not at all. Flash was from the school where DJs soaked labels off their vinyl so the competition couldn't see where his breaks came from. Proprietary to the max.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm

I recant. I have a two-degrees-of-separation association with Mohammed Bilal from MTV's Real Wold season three, San Francisco. He rapped.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm

The arbitrariness of us being allowed to play that and the terrestrial station being able to play it is especially ironic now that kids probably are tethered to their smartphones and computers where they can hear it, and probably don't listen to radio as much as older generations
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm

Weird, isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm

Three Feet High and Rising is so good. I like continually discovering the original sources of their samples years later.
Avatar 8:30pm
hyde:

ooh, three feet high and rising. this and paul's boutique are the high water mark of sampled music for me. 1989 was like the last year anyone could do this legally this liberally.
  8:31pm
Carol:

I can't count the hours I spent glued to my boombox praying the DJ would play songs I wanted to tape. also, I was just thinking that this show is going to be a regular work soundtrack. <3 irony
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
melinda:

Thanks for pandering!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
melinda:

3 Feet High was one of the 3 hip hop cassettes I had then too, it got me interested in the genre and then I didn't venture much further.
  8:34pm
Dean:

Well, the airwaves are a relatively scarce commodity, a factor that prompted early government regulation. The Internet, despite its origins as a government initiative, has expanded epidemically, one might say. So, even though radio stations, like ISPs and services who conduct business online, are private, they owe their legal existence to government oversight. Not so much the ISPs, etc. Long story short, that there isn't (so far) an FCC of the 'net isn't exactly arbitrary.
Avatar 8:36pm
