Sure wish I could put this on speakers, medium loud. Hi Jeff.

Good morning, Jeff and all.

A fair amount of the time when I'm at work, I'm alone, or nearly so. It's a gas to put on WFMU and crank it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17am

Good morning, gang of the green.

Morning, everyone! Must be a holiday tomorrow or something....

morning, jeff! not sure why i'm off work tomorrow, but i am.

anyway, how long until you get the fmu drive-time slot??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23am
pacific standard simon:

When I was a kid, we got one day off school for Lincoln, and one day for Washington. Then they combined them into one day and stuck 'em in the middle. Now they give kids a whole week off and call it "winter break" -- in Washington, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25am

Must be a nightmare for working parents.

great sounds tonight Jeff, have to go Zzz now tho - nite all, take 'er easy...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30am

@thisisbenl - This day and time slot for Jeff's show works really well for me, and the music sounds perfect for this time of night (midnight to 3, PST). But it WOULD be nice to get Jeff a bigger audience.

Good morning - Monday is Presidents Day!

Banks are closed and there is no postal service.

It's too bad this record wasn't on the Shanti label.

Jeff Conklin:

You know, in many ways this slot is a bummer but I'm very pleased at the amount of times my archive gets it the week following the broadcast. Don't know if I'd ever want to be here during the day, maybe just a wee bit earlier in the evening ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39am

From Wikipedia: "Basho died unexpectedly at the age of 45 due to a freak accident during a visit to his chiropractor, where an "intentional whiplash" experiment caused blood vessels in his neck to rupture, leading to a fatal stroke." Another good reason to avoid chiropractors like the plague. 30 years ago on 2/28.
Avatar 3:42am
Jeff Conklin:

According to the Fahey book, Basho was a wild hypochondriac
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43am
coelacanth:

it would be pretty shortsighted to have good shows consistently moved from the overnight slots, and a disservice to many people; but i can appreciate that it may not work well with the circadian rhythms of many djs.
...you could approach it as i think Stan does - as an early start to the day. (at least his programming suggests that, unfortunately for me.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44am
pacific standard simon:

I could definitely see this show happening in the 9 - Midnight slot, if it was on one of my nights off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45am
pacific standard simon:

'Cause it's all about me, don'tcha know...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45am

simon, what time does this show start where you are?

Coel: I appreciate that but...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46am

yeah, i know!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47am
pacific standard simon:

@coelacanth - Midnight. Even if I was working, I'd be off work by now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49am
coelacanth:

do you listen to any of the 6 am shows? (in other words are you up most of the night, like me?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52am
pacific standard simon:

Nope, I'm usually tapped out by then. Sometimes fall asleep with the headphones on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53am

I wonder who was playing steel on that Mighty Baby track...?

never heard this version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57am
coelacanth:

i remember when a bunch of kids at school were going to this show. it was big news since it was pretty close to home. i was fairly recently into the 'dead, but me going was not an option.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00am
pacific standard simon:

The only time I saw the Dead was a month or two before this, at a Day On The Green in Oakland, CA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05am
pacific standard simon:

The RCA records were the worst. Hold 'em by the edges and they go wobble wobble wobble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05am
coelacanth:

that's right. that's another reason i didn't go- because i didn't want to waste my time waiting around while my friends got into bands i had no desire to see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07am
coelacanth:

i didn't know you were stuck on Furry Lewis. i made a reference to him earlier on Gaylord's show. (within a pun. Gaylord liked it!)
Avatar 4:09am
Jeff Conklin:

forgot to mention that Dead show was one of 2 my father caught. He doesnt remember a thing about either one, bless him...
Avatar 4:10am
Jeff Conklin:

@coel: Does Gaylord play Furry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12am
coelacanth:

not that i know of, but i don't catch his show that often.
he did play an excellent country blues song though...hmm...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12am
coelacanth:

Mississippi Fred McDowell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12am
pacific standard simon:

@Jeff - I don't remember either, except that I think The Who was the headliner. Actually, I probably remember some of the Dead New Year's Eve shows on San Francisco radio better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13am
coelacanth:

...he got the reference though; i'm sure of it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15am
pacific standard simon:

I'm going nuts on the band Spirit, this week.
Avatar 4:18am
Jeff Conklin:

I believe McDowell and Furry did some playing together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20am
coelacanth:

huh- did not know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21am
pacific standard simon:

Probably the last halfway decent Amon Düül II album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26am
coelacanth:

i'm psyched to get my albums in alphabetical order so i can find them when i want to. i made progress last week. i have 2 spirit albums but i haven't heard them in many years.
...and a Furry Lewis comp as well. i barely remember it.
Avatar 4:28am
Jeff Conklin:

My records have been a mess for about 10 years. It takes me a long time to find anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33am
coelacanth:

it can.. i had mine in good order until 16 years ago. i had to move in short notice and i'm very grateful for this person that helped me but i don't think it even occurred to him that they might be in order!
then they ended up in storage in 3 different locations. what a mess!
now they're all in my sister's house except 4 cases which are here at home.

The last time I moved, 2/3 of my vinyl went to WFMU's sister station in San Fransisco. The cassettes are in cardboard boxes, waiting to be thrown out after I die. The CDs are pretty well organized in a spinning tower, but seldom listened to, unless ripped to mp3s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42am

true Jeff. i'd like an explanation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42am

Thanks Jeff. Excellent as always.

The cassettes are entirely from KPFA in Berkeley. Mix tapes, or Subgenius shows, or Over The Edge shows.
Avatar 4:51am

Night, coel.

@Simon: I care because I want this to feel like a welcoming place for everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54am

It IS a welcoming place for everyone. If there are no women here, it's probably because they sleep better at nights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55am

Huh. Roedelius is pretty much Fripp and Eno.

I've never checked out this MSC stuff (something about English people singing country music), but it illustrates what a beautiful dimension of sound Iain M brought to Fairport during his brief involvement.
