For my money, M Squared was the greatest Australian label of the '80s: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 12:31pm
Tony Coulter:

Free trip to the moon for anyone who can ID the LP underneath today's cassettes.
Avatar 12:33pm
Cecile:

I think I have some stuff on Fast Forward magazine somewhere. I have some Aussie books on the no/new wave and punk of the time.
Avatar 12:34pm
Cecile:

I knew about M Squared but never heard anything from them.
Avatar 12:35pm
Cecile:

Tony, do you know the Australian band Tactics?
Avatar 12:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey Cecile!

I used to have a couple more issues of Fast Forward, but traded then away ages ago, unfortunately.

M Squared is the best.
Avatar 12:36pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Don't know Tactics, no. Any good?
Avatar 12:37pm
Cecile:

Yeah, imagine Talking Heads if they played strange, robot, deconstructed dub reggae. And made less sense lyrically.
Avatar 12:37pm
Cecile:

I'm not much of a THeads fan, but Tactics are good. Their My Houdini is a classic.
Avatar 12:38pm
Tony Coulter:

I'll look for them!
Avatar 12:39pm
Cecile:

they have a compilation that came out, and in typical perverse fashion, singer David Studdert sequenced them completely randomly.
Avatar 12:42pm
Cecile:

You do know them!

Jeez! Guess I'm getting senile. Thanks for turning me on to my own record collection.
Avatar 12:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Ah, yes, I see I took those tracks from this fine comp: www.discogs.com...

Don't have any full releases by them.
Avatar 12:48pm
Tony Coulter:

Or "Watch My Hands" anyhow....
Avatar 12:55pm
Cecile:

The Tactics compilation Sound of the Sound is pretty damn cool.

Fascinating stuff so far!

Dean:

When Sandy Pearlman was interviewed on KROQ around the time of the second album he dedicated "Safe European Home" to me, "the world's greatest Clash fan." No kidding.
Avatar 1:07pm

Impressive, Dean! (And greets.)

All downhill from there.
Avatar 1:10pm

Oops! Sorry for jumping the gun, tracklist-wise.
Avatar 1:17pm
Tony Coulter:

Philip Perkins (on now) has some sure-to-be-good cassettes I hope to come across some day: www.discogs.com...
  1:19pm
Dean:

Do you know Tod Dockstader's series of "Aerial" recordings?
Avatar 1:21pm
Tony Coulter:

Haven't heard those, no. Really only know the early stuff.
  1:22pm
Dean:

The Perkins smelled a bit like them, but "Aerial" is much more dense.
Avatar 1:22pm
Tony Coulter:

No, not that "Blade Runner. I checked!

Happy to hear Anderson here.

good points on Burroughs. Part carny barker, part mark warning you away. And after you've heard his Dr. Benway voice, it's tough not to hear it upon reading him on the page again.
Avatar 1:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes, the way this tape mixes music, skits, and interviews is quite fun and intriguing. Wish more comps did that.
Avatar 1:28pm
Cecile:

And they did it all with razorblades and tape.
  1:31pm
Dean:

That's how Dockstader composed "Aerial," too.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
listener james from westwood:

Whoa, I have heard this "Bacillus" background Italo-disco elsewhere in some form on the station. Fabio IIRC used a version as bed music. Crazy! That's WFMU for you.
Avatar 1:35pm

RELEASE THE BATS!
Avatar 1:40pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks to youtube videos, I now see bats as adorably cute rather than sinister.
Avatar 1:43pm
Cecile:

where in Michigan? and who's on it? It kind of looks like something connected with WCBN's Special Ed.
Avatar 1:44pm
Cecile:

Just be careful, Tony. They are flying bags of rabies.
Avatar 1:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Wyandote, MI, wherever that is. No band names are given. There's just a long alphabetical list of everyone heard throughout the tape, and almost every name is unfamaliar. It's definitely got strong connections to Frank Pahl and Only a Mother, though.
Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

Avatar 1:48pm
Cecile:

Wyandotte is near Ann Arbor.
Avatar 1:50pm
Cecile:

is there a Mark Murrell listed?
Avatar 1:52pm
Tony Coulter:

Nope, he's not listed -- but Lennon/McCartney are.
Avatar 1:53pm

awesome
Avatar 1:53pm
Tony Coulter:

I actually have four tapes in this mysterious series -- will play others here in the future.
Avatar 2:03pm

Or, umm, three cassettes. Volume Four is an LP and a lot easier to figure out: www.discogs.com...

This imposes some order on the chaos: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Tape-Number-One-A-Private-Studio-Compilation/release/7889262
Avatar 2:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Dean. Of course, whoever added that to discogs couldn't figure out the performers/bands either.
Avatar 2:10pm
Tony Coulter:

Here's that link again, made all clicky-feely: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 2:12pm
Tony Coulter:

The track titles that start with "Ode" or "Warped" are almost certainly by Pahl/Only a Mother.
Avatar 2:14pm
Tony Coulter:

Along with many others, most likely. Some tracks really don't sound like them, though. Who knows!?!
Avatar 2:15pm
Tony Coulter:

Or perhaps Only a Mother didn't even exist yet.
Avatar 2:17pm
Tony Coulter:

Guess I should just ask Frank Pahl and get him to explain everything. Though I like a good mystery now and again....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm

enjoyed the show today, but have to leave early -- thanks Tony!
