PJ took a trip there. DC's Community of Hope (a group that inspired the song title) is furious with PJ's negative portrayal of the city.

Here's an article about one of PJ Harvey's tours:

I'm with Chris on this one. Anyway most of the PJ Harvey album is about different places, if I'm not mistaken. I'm impressed that "The Wheel" seems to be about murdered and/or missing children, possibly in eastern Europe? Intense stuff. Coincidentally, the first place I ever heard PJ Harvey was on the D.C. area's WHFS in the early 90s, BTW.

Well, her seemingly one-dimensional portrayal of DC as an outsider is not being taken very well around these parts, that's all I'm saying. But I've only heard the tune once and it didn't stick with me.

I feel like being critical of DC at this point is like kicking someone just as they are trying to get up off the ground. Also, it's not like this territory hasn't been covered inside and out.

Work sucks. Saw the PJ Harvey thread. I guess she got a tour guide that showed her what she wanted to see. Yea DC has its bad spots. Here's a nice place I'd a taken her to as well. Its tucked in a neighborhood right close to the 'pathway of death' she describes.

Cool Cecile. I think we might have had this discussion once before. Of course you're aware that station mgr Ken had a show there, too, and probably some other FMU-ers. There seems to be kind of an Ann Arbor-NJ pipeline.

Too bad their archives only go back a couple years. I'd love to hear some of your shows. I can't even access most of mine, and it wasn't that long ago. :( FMU has just about everybody beat, technology-wise, IMHO. All there interactivity and time-wasting content on the website makes FMU a multimedia orgy of pleasure

CBN is still a great station, though they do waste a lot of air time for events announcements.
  11:20am
Dean:

Technically, you can't copyright a slogan. You can trademark it. But if you could copyright it, you wouldn't have to do anything to protect it. Once you fix the expression to a tangible medium of expression -- i.e., "write it down" -- it's copyrighted. If it were copyrighted, you could dedicate it to the public domain or license it under Creative Commons.

Well, in any case, Brian, I'm making my slogan thingie public domain, to be used as anyone wishes. Or ignored, which may be the best use for it.

Speaking of, does onanism fall under Fair Use?
  11:29am
Dean:

The Slogan Ouroboros: Ignore this Slogan!
  11:32am
Dean:

Well, let's consider the four factors:

1. The purpose and character of the use
2. The nature of the work
3. The amount and substantiality of the portion taken
4. The effect of the use upon the potential market.

It's the last one that'll get you. There's a healthy market you're circumventing when you copy Onan.
