Richard Lyons with the 1968 Estus Pirkle LP "If Footmen Tire You What Will Horses Do?," which he purchased at the Pleasant Hill Salvation Army in 1982. Samples from this became the 1987 Negativland track "Christianity Is Stupid," with a video version by Negativland made in 2004. (from The Stranger's obituary of Lyons, the 3rd Negativland member to pass away recently (Apr. 19, 2016). RIP Pastor Dick.)

Listener Robert:

Jesse Walker recently linked from his Hit & Run blog entry to a digitized version of "Footmen", but I was too impatient to listen to the whole side to find out what I've wanted to know for years: what "the loudspeakers hook up instead" meant in context. And now I can't dig up the link!

are you _sure_ this isn't an accept cover?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Dan Bodah:

I thought it was "the last speaker spoke up and said"
  7:14pm
Listener Robert:

Gah! Thanks, Tony, now it makes perfect sense. Not on its own, but with Jesse Walker's explanation that it was about indoctrination of Korean War prisoners. The loudspeakers spoke up & said, "Christianity is stupid, communism is good," etc. That must be what it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Dan Bodah:

@Kurt, not entirely.

Yeah the popup crapped out again. I'm trying mp3 via VLC.

I confirm that there's something distinctly flaky going on with the streams. Looking into it.
  7:26pm
Listener Robert:

It's affecting Flash, .asx, & .pls. I haven't tried RAM in a while, maybe need to.

Ken From Hyde Park:

Been listening for a couple hours on the mp3 stream with VLC and it's been rock solid. In past weeks, I've noticed that Mayuko's show skips when the next show commences (used the pop-up for that stream).

Thanks for the link, Jeff. I couldn't say it solves the problem, because all the rest got fixed in the meantime, but I should bookmark it.
Avatar 7:41pm
Jeff:

The main streams seem to be good now. I restarted the main encoder machine, but it may just be a coincidence that things got better after that - I think we were mostly dealing with a transient network problem between us and the main public stream server.

Stepchild:

If I'd told you it affected TuneIn's stream as well would that have provided any help? Well, it's better here too, now. Also, much thanks for that Stranger Lyons obit!! And the tunes, BTW, are also so nice tonight...

Ike:

91.1 FM has been solid for the whole show so far.
  7:51pm
Listener Robert:

Ike, if only the diffraction over the hill were strong enough to get from E. Orange in this basement! That was one of my regrets about moving here 30 yrs. ago; if I go outside, like in a parked car, I can get it.
  7:52pm
Cliff:

Glad to see the stream's fixed :D
Avatar 7:53pm

Steph keeps imagining this is you singing, Dan. :)
  7:53pm
Listener Robert:

It'll be 30 yrs. in June, almost half my life...depressing. At the time I thought it'd be pretty temporary. Was thinking about moving into NJ or NE Penna. recently too. It'd be WFMU's or WMFU's reception area, but don't get the idea that was the main impetus!
  7:57pm
JakeGould:

Avatar 7:58pm
Jeff:

@Stepchild: TuneIn relays the same streams we provide for direct listeners, so it's all basically the same.

@Listener Robert: those azx, plx and ram playlist files all refer to the same two underlying MP3 streams these days - we simplified. There's the 128k stereo MP3 stream which sounds pretty decent, and the 32k mono MP3 stream which sounds pretty dire, but can be useful for listeners who are severely bandwidth-constrained.

Oh, and the AAC and Ogg Vorbis streams are still distinct, to please codec connoisseurs. Note that I've bumped the AAC codec's bitrate up a little from what's advertised, and I think AAC deals with vinyl tics and pops with less drama and trauma than MP3.
