I just got the Jon Savage book a few days ago, and if it's half as good as his others, it'll be informative, entertaining, and the definitive document of the subject at hand.

Dylan, 'Pet Sounds', 'Revolver', 'A Quick One'
- most of the best 'Nuggets' stuff - VU & Nico recorded if it took a while to find release (like the Pistols & Clash 10 years later had trouble)
- right inbetween '65 the Mod Style year & '67 the Summer of Love
- 1966 was it !

I think of Love as being exactly between The bYRds & the doors in L.A.
Lenny Kaye started 'Nuggets' w/ 'Too Much to Dream Last Night' by the Electric Prunes - & is that not the perfect balance of Pop & Experimentation? Some say that trying to cram the whole Universe into 2:30 in 'Good Vibrations' as a Pop Single Hit is what finally drove Brian Wilson crazy...

In the U.S. - we think of Vietnam & the Draft all the time (it split up many Garage Bands, for instance) - & Civil Rights - so the reminder about the Bomb & Cold War is fascinating...as a background perhaps to a drive towards Escapism - like Psych, but also those nutty TV Shows (Batman, Star Trek, Munsters &tc. &tc.)...Horror & SciFi - the Monster Culture flourished for younger kids...

Kind of surprised Jon Savage said the UK didn't have "that kind of violence" in reference to the Civil Rights movement in the US South. The Northern Irish Civil Rights marches began in 1966 directly inspired by the US Civil Rights movement. Would eventually lead to the Troubles.
