Morning, Jeff and all! Dreary, dim Sundays cry out for jazz.

Good morning!

Well then I'd better play some, @ljfw! Morning to you, and also to you, @Peter from DE!

Hi all..DO in the AM, then Paper Mill Theater's West Side Story with my 99 mother in law. Now playing DO through speakers to, ahem, help motivate my wife to leave the house faster :) She says you can do better than that, Jeff, but I warned her you will...

That's 99 year old, hate tapping on devices.

Ha ha, @doctorjazz. Greetings to you and Mrs. @doctorjazz. Yeah, we're really oozing into the start of this show...

good morning

Hello, @Andrew Waterloo! Gosh, up early today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am
Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: 99 years! And going to local theater! (Insert "Hasn't she suffered enough?" joke here.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am

yah, doesn't feel like it though

All of these new releases this year, or any reissues? They're bloody perfect for today.

Peter from DE:

This atmospheric stuff is a great continuation of my Saturday night, seeing my friend William Clarke-Fields improvise electronic music with visual interface: www.facebook.com... (Bill's set starts 49:30). I also picked up a second-hand copy of "Longing for the Past: The 78 rpm Era in Southeast Asia" (Dust-to-Digital), so it's a great weekend for weird music. (And going to see the Rahsaan Roland Kirk documentary this afternoon.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am
Jeff Golick:

All new releases, @ljfw. That Wooden Houses link takes you to a name-yr-price download, btw.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am
Jeff Golick:

Hiya, @hyde!

@Peter: wow second hand D2D doesn't turn up very often. Nice grab. Thanks for that link. Is that a new Rahsaan doc?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:31am
Peter from DE:

It's called "The Case of the Three Sided Dream." It's available for streaming online for I think $9.99, but if you're near Wilmington DE you can see it at Theatre N at 4:00 (on the big screen, $8). According to reviews, the doc doesn't delve as deep as it could into Kirk's life but features lots of performance footage.

Paper Mill Theater is Actually off Broadway in Jersey...really nice productions, they sometimes preview shows going to Broadway (Newsies was one). One of the few things out here that mitigates my missing Park Slope a wee bit.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:33am
Peter from DE:

@Jeff -- do check out that link later (and there are two other electronic music performers). I think you'll like it. I'm not always into ambient/drone stuff "at home" but enjoy it more "in person." And Bill's stuff is really cool, he's been playing with visual stuff lately. I have no idea what he was doing, he was moving sliders and pushing buttons on his iPad.

I actually hate "name your price", feel bad low balling, feel like a sap paying more...
(bring this to my shrink next time...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am

@Jeff: Thanks for the scoop! Between this show's new releases and the ones Sheila B. plays, this could get expensive! (Maybe why I'm working on a weekend!)

I've listened to some of that Glen Jones show -- my morbid curiosity wanted to know what a person would sound like towards the end of that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am
Jeff Golick:

And?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am
listener james from westwood:

He sounded like he was swelling up all over, like his tongue needed a 20-day nap. He sounded like a smeared, distorted Polaroid. The bizarre thing is he was up for a few hours after that! He went to Ken Freedman's place and gave an interview and such before crashing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:04am

Got this recording the day it came out, glad to have more Evans with DeJohnette (and studio setting), but nothing on this album can touch the classic Verve Montreux record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am

That's an impressive image, @ljfw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am
Gary:

I was trying to find the place where he might have collapsed at the end or something, but I never did. The parts I heard were near the end, and he seemed to be holding up well, although I admittedly did not sit there and listen for very long -- I was literally scooting around trying to hear something on the lines of "I ... uh ... it's been ... this ... what are those birds with human arms do --" [crashing noise]

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
Jeff Golick:

A few months ago I featured a number of Sub Rosa releases in a set: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am
Jeff Golick:

Just gonna stick this here, from the Sub Rosa link above: "Under development from the late 1960s, the SalMar is believed to be the first interactive 'composing machine' with digital logic circuits at its heart. The performance took place in the spring of 1983 at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris. It illustrates the power that an electronic composition can achieve when the composer arrives at a true synergy with his synthesizer. When you listen to this recorded performance of Sal Martirano playing his 'Construction,' you experience such mastery. The instrument under his command does his bidding, and what you hear are compositions, not jams."

Or is it a metaphor --- @ljfw?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am

@Gary: Glen was actually standing as he crossed the line. I think he was worried if he sat, he'd conk TF out.

Ken also gave him a sponge/Wet Ones bath at some point.

Just got rained out on my Ozzie walk, had to hide the electronics, catch up on the archive.
Back to Tapscott, I had no idea there was so much of his music out there. I remember trying to find him in record stores and catalogs years back, and all you could find was The Dark Tree, maybe another cd if you looked hard. Boy, things have changed in these days of the internets.

(I'd probably also have to change my pants. Just saying.)

The bit where Lisa tries to get KJAZZ to play Bleedin' Gums Murphy's record has this gem of a line:

Well, I'd spin it for you, but you know, ain't no one going to hear it. Our broadcast range is only 23 feet which makes us the most powerful jazz station in the entire US of A.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am
Jeff Golick:

"The music you are listening to was improvised on February 3rd, 2013 on MacDougal Street in New York. We had never all played together before. The first note you hear was the first note played. Fifty minutes later we took a break, which is where the album ends. I named the pieces in tribute to five influential people who passed away between December 28th, 2012 and February 4th, 2013. The title of the album can be taken as a humble request at the moment of their crossing over."
