This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

yeah, i know Moebius. i've bought some issues of Heavy Metal in my time! don't know that much else in the vein of Hugo Pratt. a lot of what looks good in European adventure comics seems to be untranslated. there's not much of a market for it here, i don't think.
  8:27pm

ha, im slowly collecting issues of Heavy Metal from the start...moebius' work has been unavailable for a long time in the states but i think some stuff is getting republished later this year
Avatar 8:33pm

the thing i really want to read is The Eternaut, written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld (who wrote some strip stuff that Hugo Pratt did art for) and drawn by the Argentine Francisco Solano Lopez. Fantagraphics published it in English a few years back, but I missed it and now it's rare and really expensive.

Hello Evan and Explorers
Avatar 8:58pm
Flash Strap:

the last real Tintin, Tintin and the Picaros, is far from the best but is real real weird. I love when Hergé gets his rather simple understanding of geopolitics involved in pastiches of extremely complicated insurrectionist goings-on
  8:59pm
onoma:

i wonder which instrument is on your mind right now, Gila. wonderful, wonderful music
Avatar 9:00pm
Flash Strap:

Hello, Coelacanth! and explorer Onoma!
  9:00pm
walkingTrees:

that was the beauty of tintin (and herge) the evolution, some people are quick to point to the understandably offensive material in Tintin in the Congo.. but herge was growing and evolving the whole time
  9:03pm
walkingTrees:

oh man, i wish: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VPMVbOKhKuU/TtUi_uK0aRI/AAAAAAAAABk/weUdUQP1yqQ/s1600/tintin-lovecraft-01.jpg
  9:04pm
onoma:

fantastic show, Flash! i agree with every single thing you said earlier, it's really some of the most inventive, profound and mesmerizing music of this century...saw them twice in Paris, i won't ever miss an occasion to see them live
Avatar 9:05pm
Flash Strap:

I agree. And I love Tintin with all my heart. Such an alt-dimension portrait of Europe and its empire in the early 20th century, with every panel a perfect cinematic composition.

That said, Hergé's racist tendencies/anti-semitic sympathies, while they did evolve significantly, are embarrassing and should always be noted and criticized. it's the only way to really save the work, I think.

That is why Blue Lotus is so fascinating though, it;s a portrait of a man critiquing his own racial attitudes toward the Chinese
Avatar 9:06pm
Flash Strap:

Thanks Onoma! would love to catch this stuff live... have never had the opportunity
  9:09pm
walkingTrees:

tintint in tibet i believe solidifies your point. perhaps born flawed, tintin (herge) grew out of such narrow mindedness with time, and in my opinion is forgiven for past short comings
Avatar 9:10pm
Flash Strap:

since we're talking weird experimental short movies, i'm gonna share my most recent fave find on Youtube. Films by Takashi, Ito from the 80's. They're amazing. SPACY (www.youtube.com...), GHOST (www.youtube.com...), THUNDER (www.youtube.com...).

accidentally moved into an affordable (by my previous san francisco standards) apt in a snooty neighborhood in boulder. the area, including denver, is void of cultural things im into overall.

also the normal occurrence of crossing a raging river over a downed tree on an impromptu weekday hike in the northwest soothes me as a drift off into slumber at night...

also i can't properly play and make music where i am due to neighbors.
