Tonight we'll mourn the passing of one of our favorite record stores, ever, OTHER MUSIC, which closed its doors forever on Saturday, June 25.

Intro   Favoriting

Bodega Pop Live

2016

DJ Shadow  Best Foot Forward [Alternate Version]   Favoriting Endtroducing... (Deluxe Ed) Excessive Ephemera [Disc 2]  2005  USA | Endtroducing... of course came out in 1996, the first full year that Other Music was opened. (They opened Dec 1995.) I found this terrific "deluxe edition" used there, somewhat recently  0:04:30 (Pop-up)
The Raincoats  Balloonacy   Favoriting The Kitchen Tapes  1998  United Kingdom | I think this is the first thing I ever bought at Other Music, but I'm not entirely sure. I moved to NYC in summer of 1997, so it's possible I didn't get to Other Music for 6 months to a year ...  0:06:03 (Pop-up)
Joey Boy  ยกมือขึ้น (Demo) [Put Up Your Hands]   Favoriting Sorry I'm Happy  2004  Thailand | Bought this and two other Thai hip-hop CDs maybe two weeks before Other closed, in the "used" section, although they still had shrinkwrap on them  0:10:03 (Pop-up)
Tsehaytu Beraki  Sport Malet   Favoriting Selam [Disc 1]  2004  Ethiopia | Bought this one used  0:13:33 (Pop-up)
The Group  Kumâlo   Favoriting The Feed-Back  2014  Italy | Originally released 1970 | Walter Branchi, Bruno Battisti D’Amario, Mario Bertoncini, John Heineman, Ennio Morricone  0:19:18 (Pop-up)
Maryam  Wahdi (وحدي)   Favoriting Mesh Baghanny  212  Egypt | This is one of the most beautiful CDs I've ever bought -- I mean the cover and insides, though the music is wonderful too -- imported from Egypt  0:33:35 (Pop-up)
Franck Vigroux + Matthew Bourne  Radio Stars   Favoriting Radioland: Radio-Activity Revisited  2015  France | This album is insanely great -- I bought it originally to play on the Krafterwerk show I did, but did I? No, I did not. These are not cover versions so much as homages to the tracks ... super-love for this album  0:39:42 (Pop-up)
Alice Bag  Modern Day Virgin Sacrifice   Favoriting Alice Bag  2016  USA | This CD, Bag's first solo album ever (!?), I picked up on the day it was released, June 24, the day before Other Music closed. THEY GOT IT FOR THEIR STORE EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE CLOSING THE NEXT DAY. *tear drop*  0:45:39 (Pop-up)
Les Rallizes Dénudés  Strung Out Deeper Than the Night   Favoriting France Demo Tapes  2016  Japan | Bought on or near the day it came out, a week or two before Other Music closed  0:48:17 (Pop-up)

Shalabi Effect  Skin Job   Favoriting Unfortunately  2005  Canada | Bought used. I ran into Kurt Gottschalk, who also stopped in at OM on the way to one of WFMU's readings at the Red Room. He recommended I get this and another Shalabi Effect album.  1:29:44 (Pop-up)

Hey, Gary and all! Sad occasion for the show, but I know this will be an amazing 3 hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm
Gary:

Hey there, James! Well, I can't admit to being an especially adventurous shopper there, but I did pick some gems up over the year

Was reading a paperback printed in 1971 over dinner and am now discovering my hands have that wonderful old-book smell on them.
Avatar 7:07pm
ndbob:

What book James?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
listener james from westwood:

"Honor Thy Father," Gay Talese. Nabbed it in the used section of my local B&N.
Avatar 7:11pm
ndbob:

I've forced myself to cut down on book buying a little - have at least 50 I haven't read
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Gary:

Do fingers pick up the old book smell? I actually never noticed that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
melinda:

I like this Raincoats.
Avatar 7:15pm
ndbob:

Kind of Gary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Gary:

I love that whole Raincoats album, Melinda -- so wonderful. Speaking of wonderful, I can't even tell you how insanely thrilled I was to find this Joey Boy CD there a couple of weeks ago.
Avatar 7:17pm
ndbob:

Joey Boy is good - not much of a hip-hop fan - I like the international stuff better though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
listener james from westwood:

I hear ya ndbob. My to-be-read pile is a foot deep but I couldn't resist a huge chunk of New Journalism for only $3—same price as 45ish years ago!
Avatar 7:17pm
steve:

OM is my fav record store of all time, and I'm not just saying that. I would posit that Other Music may have had THE BEST used section in all of record store in history...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Gary:

They had an amazing used section, definitely -- and lots more imports (from places like Thailand!) than other stores
Avatar 7:21pm
ndbob:

@James I'm afraid to walk into bookstores sometimes - record shows even more so
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
listener james from westwood:

Hell, the town library just started a summer program where they drop a ticket in a jar for you for each book you take out, with a drawing for a basket of cheer near Labor Day. How am I supposed to get any work done with that sort of borrowing impetus?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
melinda:

Gary is Kitchen Tapes the album w/the cover of Lola? Don't know a ton of Raincoats songs but I liked that one too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
Gary:

No, I'm not sure what album that's from -- I have an MP3, but I think I got it from Mr. Fab's blog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Gary:

@Melinda, it looks like Lola is from their first album, The Raincoats, from 1979
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
melinda:

Thanks Gary.

LRD!!!
Avatar 7:53pm
steve:

where on earth do they keep finding these undiscovered LRD demos and bootlegs
Avatar 7:53pm
hyde:

@Steve there *are* seemingly endless numbers of them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
Gary:

The liner notes for this one say that this selection was floating around for a while in bootleg fashion. This has apparently been remastered. This is the shortest track on it, and they're all amazing, but holy bejeebus, there's a 20+ minute track that is ultra mind-blowing
Avatar 7:56pm
steve:

I had a bunch... donated em all to the station a few years ago. The one troubling thing is I'm pretty sure most are CDrs and so won't live forever.
Avatar 7:59pm
ndbob:

excellent first hour Gary! catch the rest later
Avatar 8:03pm
northguineahills:

I think that's called album oriented rock?
Avatar 8:04pm
northguineahills:

Bryce plays full cds often enough on his show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Gary:

Hi NGH! Ah, good to know -- maybe I will be less squeamish about it
Avatar 8:11pm
hyde:

Bryce had a six track, three hour show a month or two back. it was awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
Gary:

@Hyde -- he played 6 tracks off each album?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm
Gary:

I guess I always felt that, because Tony doesn't archive Tape Hiss out of respect to the artists that maybe it was sort of a thing
Avatar 8:14pm
hyde:

no, his entire show was comprised of just six tracks (not les rallizes denudes tracks, other stuff)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Gary:

Aha!
Avatar 8:16pm
hyde:

i like everything i've heard from this Träd Gräs Och Stenar thing
Avatar 8:18pm
northguineahills:

I've seen Bryce do a 3 track three hour show before. He did do the station ID during each track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm

It's another beautifully packaged thing, with a booklet that I haven't yet had a chance to read, but look forward to

Sound policy on the Birkin entry.

@ngh oh man, i must've missed that one. that sounds great. i love his show.
Avatar 8:28pm

I've dared Kurt to do the same, and he came close. I once had a three hour slot on Free109point.org, and played Philip Glass's Einstein on the Beach. I went over, as I was the last dj that evening.

Catching up on comments...did y'all reals that CRAY-ZEE Gay Talese story on the NYer a few weeks back? About the hotel voyeur? Bonkers.

Did this South African comp get much play when it came out? It's terrific

Currently reading a history of DARPA, the secret US military/tech group. Making me feel dirty in a different way...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm

One thing I am looking forward to when I'm in London in a couple of weeks is going to Honest Jon's store ... that and the post-Brexit exchange rate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm
Gary:

I don't know about DARPA ... what would you suggest I read in shorter form about them? (On the internet preferably)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm

There was a podcast episode about that motel voyeur but I forget which one it was. Creepy.

I read that New Yorker article too. Spooky and unforgettable. Some of the letters to the editor in response were scathing regarding the ethics of the reporter, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Gary:

Writing that in my notebook now, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Gary:

Oh, man -- I missed the letters that followed

Leather:

I usually listen as I push carts in the target parking lot at night. Thai music especially tends to get me the oddest looks from customers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Jeff Golick:

Missed the letters, too, though for sure Talese is implicated in a way that is, at the very least, pretty icky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm

No good knowledge re DARPA articles, Gary. Sorry!

It's amazing, Hyde -- you can see it on the wall in the photo to the left ... right to the right of the guy to the furthest right's head
