Hey Dave, I had a long conversation with my friend Tom Smith today (from To Live and Shave in L.A.). He told me a great anecdote you'd appreciate. When he was in tenth grade (c. '72) in Adel, GA, he and his friend would find, like, Can and Amon Duul records in the 99 cent bin at the local Woolworth's!!!
Avatar 9:11pm
Dave Mandl:

Those were the days. Probably no one wanted that "crap."
Avatar 9:12pm
HollyT:

Exactly
  9:12pm

...when I hear guitar like that I always think 'Durutti Column'...nice to be right for a second!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
joeray:

Thanks for all the great shows, Dave! I can't face an "Echoless" Sunday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
Chop Scott:

Kenny Burrell--my absolute fave guitar player.
Avatar 9:23pm
Dave Mandl:

Hey there RRN63, joeray, Scott!
Avatar 9:23pm
Dave Mandl:

@Scott: Agreed. I heard him in the supermarket the other day (believe or not) and I've been in the mood ever since.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm
Chop Scott:

Kenny Burrell--"Midnight Blue" remains a go to listen. Great record--think it was a Rudy Van Gelder session.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Not only are Jazz guys generally as disciplined as Classical guys w/ Swing added - but all they do is Play & are generally dauntingly Prolific...after all, what else is there?
Avatar 9:32pm
Dave Mandl:

@Scott: Yeah, I think you're right.
@RRN63: Hardcore jazz musicians deserve our undying respect.
  9:33pm
mary:

yes, undying respect
  9:33pm
cheri:

dave, you'll be terribly missed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I think Jazz scares off some people - because you never feel like you've got your arms quite around it - but it's also the feeling of this deeply rich tradition & inexhaustible resource. Just like it's about both Standards & eternal Improvisation in Form...
Avatar 9:38pm
Dave Mandl:

TVM, mary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& historically, Rawk is Jazz anyway - but don't tell anyone...
Avatar 9:38pm
Dave Mandl:

@RRN63: Been reading some books on jazz theory (as a musician), and it rubs in how daunting their knowledge is.
Avatar 9:39pm
Dave Mandl:

It is. That's true.
  9:49pm
cheri:

I just can't believe "the world of echo" will soon be over :( bravo dave!
Avatar 9:58pm

Hey Dave, fantastic show! Let's talk soon.
