This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

this track so wild. the word is that Dizzy had never even really seen a synthesizer until this session.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
doctorjazz:

This is wild, Diz and Latin Percussion was always a heady mix! (late in Diz's career).
Avatar 7:09pm

Saw "Dizzy",(John Birks Gillespie),live at Catalina's once. Still can't believe how lucky that was. Shows like that are religious experiences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
doctorjazz:

Couldn't hear a synthesizer so far, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm

Lucky enough to have caught him many times in NY Jazz clubs, often with Jon Faddis, his "sidekick" at the time.

Those Dizzy shows were fabulous, used to drag non jazz friends to see him, always transcendent music and lots of smiles in that Dizzy kind of way. Haven't thought about it for a while, but making me nostalgic...

I've read that Olatunji had a profound effect on Mo Tucker of the Velvet Underground
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm

Velvets and Olatunji? Wow, that's a stretch, can't think of styles more diverse (now, Coltrane and the Velvets...)

Hi NGH!

I've heard that too, LD. I remember that Iggy Pop was also really influenced by a George Abdo belly dancing record. People just trying to leave the normative western styles are drawn outward, even if they use it in a hard-to-identify way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
doctorjazz:

Thanks, Danny, I didn't doubt you on whether she was influenced by Olatunji, just couldn't picture it from the Velvet's music. Liked the link, interesting read (hanging out at my office with some time to kill).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm

@hyde: one of my neighbors sometimes plays guitar on his front steps. It would be funny if I sat on my steps just out of view and tried to accompany him on bongos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
melinda:

Did you unload the tympanis at your moving sale?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
coelacanth:

i'd like some bongos too. i sold mine for $35. when i left nj 15 years ago. my plan was to camp upstate 'till the winter then live in my car and head west. 'got rid of most of my stuff.
...i'm still here, with lots of stuff, but no bongos.

hyde:

grrrr, bongos. i had a nice set, and i can't find 'em!
Avatar 9:23pm
Flash Strap:

@melinda: I used to play sax in my room at my place in Boston... there was this weird dude who would come around with a trumpet and stand in the alleyway and play along. Both of us were, uh, "avant garde" and together it was just the sound of rusty squiggles. I never even saw him I don't think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Little Danny:

Ha! Bongos seem like they'd be hard to lose. (Of course I'm one to talk.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm

they buried themselves in the mix a lot, but there's a lot of psych/library style stuff getting added to this. it's not at all the ethnographic thing it sort of seems to be. Might have like Marc Chantereau and guys like that on it, but I'm not sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
melinda:

There was a set of bongos at my grandmother's house that I wish I had now. They must have belonged to my older cousins who lived with her for a while (there were other odd things around the house, like troll dolls, which must have come from the same era).
