Monk was my gateway to all the jazz beyond early swing.
Happy Birthday Mr.Monk. you will Live forever.
Avatar 7:47pm
geezerette:

God I love this music. Can't remember my gateway drug. Possibly Lester Young through Lady Day but think I was born with it.
Parents dug West Coast, Cal Tjader fans in fact!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
KimSorise:

Jazz has been perhaps my greatest love affair. I do credit dad with handing me Pharoah Sanders & Coltrane Live in Seattle at age 10 or 11... Also as a horn player - I loved Miles Davis endlessly, until I heard Don Cherry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
coelacanth:

my parents' only jazz was Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, etc...i loved the BG immediately as a child and when i was in jr. high we'd cut school & go to my father's house. all we had was his record collection. 1 beatles'; 1 CCR; ...so we'd smoke herb and i eventually put on the Benny Goodman. lo and behold my friends all dug it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
coelacanth:

- then my older brother moved into my mother's house for a minute, with his Monk's greatest hits album.
...doors flew open.
Avatar 8:00pm
geezerette:

Isn't it incredible how large and infinitely expressive jazz is?
Elegant, brainy and raw. I loved Miles too,and Don Cherry... Pharoah Sanders and Yusef Lateef...on & on.
Avatar 8:02pm

Avatar 8:07pm

Thanks Kim!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
KimSorise:

No Geezer - I didn't play any Copeland, but I can put that on reserve for another day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
coelacanth:

so true,g. it does seem infinite.
- i listened to Miles' "agharta"(sp?) a few days ago. it thrills me every time, and it's not even his best. ...1975!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm

This LP was a major shift for me - goose bumps still when I hear this track... Damn Ornette
Avatar 8:45pm
geezerette:

Absolutely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ornette wunna the Heaviest...& that Band !
Altho' - being raised in the matrix of Psychedelia (Jimi Hendrix, Floyd. 'I Am the Walrus') - it's hard to see what the big deal was in 1959 w/ it !...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
coelacanth:

(+ Don Cherry, whom i get the impression toppled Miles in your world.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
KimSorise:

I still love Miles - I do, but Don does go one step beyond for me at times. But I have been revisiting Miles lately and so much of it is just stellar!
Avatar 8:54pm
geezerette:

@RR:just noticed link, thanks for sharing that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
coelacanth:

they're both incredible, in very different ways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thing about Ornette was - it was always Expressive & Emotive. He certainly had Theory, but it was in service to a Statement - once relates to, always remembered.
Miles was such a Stylist, & so Schooled - it's understandable. But in the end, not interested in standing still. Coltrane bridged the worlds of Discipline & Freedom more completely - but even he got to where he was just beating on his chest because he had no more to play...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
coelacanth:

the thing i like most about Miles is the different textures he plays.
Don is just straight up beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm
coelacanth:

RR, re: Trane...or so he thought. i'd bet if he'd stayed among us he would've found new places to go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Miles: How come you play so much ??
Trane': I don't know how to stop Miles !
Miles: ...Take the damn horn outcha mouth...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm

It's all about the notes you don't play...
