Also, recall Rep. Ellison's Sunday talk show appearance in July 2015. He called it then. The pundits laughed.

	7:16pm Dean: I regret that Greenwald so viscerally turns people off. To my mind, he is among the most astute and incisive commentators. I'm less familiar with Moore, but that's because I'm not interested in film. Re: DJT as anti-Semite, see this remark by Brian Leiter: "Trump himself is a racist (more a casual racist, than an ideologically committed one), but he is not an anti-semite. But he has certainly emboldened the anti-semites, as well as the racists."

	7:17pm melinda: I think Bernie might have won, but not in the landslide some predicted. The Socialist Jewish atheist thing could definitely have worked against him. But the younger generation who was fired up by him generally doesn't think about the Cold War baggage associated with the term 'socialism'.
	7:18pm ndbob: I just find Greenwald smug - and wrong mostly - and right Trump isn't an antisemite but he emboldens antiSemitism
	7:18pm Gary: It makes no sense to me that people are freaked out about socialism. But, then, I was a wee lad during the cold war
	7:19pm coelacanth: i live in a bit of a bubble. most folks were sure hillary would win and scoffed when i said dump probably would.
	7:19pm Gary: I mean, what are people afraid other people are going to steal from them ... their crippling debt?
	7:20pm ndbob: @Gary because it's unfairly associated wiht Communism - and many see it as too restrictive of liberty
	7:21pm ndbob: I think socialism is good in areas like healthcare not good in other areas
	7:22pm melinda: @Bob: I agree that Trump isn't necessarily the anti-semite/racist he seems to be, but if he's willing to play the part, that's just as bad. If he starts sounding a different tune once in office that would be great, but I'm not counting on it.
	7:23pm hyde: @Dean i often like Greenwald's analysis and i think the Intercept in general is really good. but i am much less fond of Greenwaldian hyperbole.

	7:25pm ndbob: right Melinda - what I worry about is that if some of his poor economic ideas are implemented he will say something like "You know who's responsible folks"

	7:26pm Dean: Trump's electorate do not predominantly suffer from crippling debt. He fashioned his populism out of the myth that they do. I kind of get the "smug" characterization, but not fully. He is an activist attorney, and one trait attorneys acquire is a modicum of smugness. But wrong? Greenwald is one of the few journalists/pundits who actually marshals evidence for his argument, again a feature of being an attorney. Hyperbole, too, is essential to an attorney's rhetorical kit. Still, I don't read much of Greenwald as hyperbolic. I don't always agree with him--he reluctantly supported the outcome of Citizens United, for instance--but his tone to me sounds more sarcastic. Then again, I'm mixing his tweets with his more fleshed out articles.

	7:34pm Dean: Damn, I had ER's first two LPs back in the '80s. Probably paid a buck a piece. Unloaded them, along with a shit-ton of other good rock and pop, during a purge in the late '80s. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

	7:35pm Parq: As for the election, I've lived through this with Reagan (twice), I lived through this with Bush Senior, and I lived through it with Bush Jr (also twice). I'm just numb at this point. What could I possibly have left to say? What, other than a dull sense of hopeless disaffection, could I possibly have left to feel?

	7:43pm ndbob: Yep - I see this as much worse than Reagan or the Bushes - I think Bush Sr turned out to be a pretty good president although the campaign that Atwater ran was vile

	7:51pm ndbob: I support TPP I need to say - I think people need to keep in mind that it's wrong to use the same techniques the repubs used to interfere with the running of the system - you don't want a complete breakdown in government

	9:38pm Ike: Yep, VV is in between LP and Vientiane. I took an insanely winding 7-hour bus ride through stunning mountain passes from VV to LP but I had a lot of time on that trip. VV is a little touristy but nice, but if you have limited time, maybe go w/more time in LP since LP is the best.
	9:44pm steve: i saw Chadbourne recently and picked up his insane new book "Dreamory" which is a 1200 (!) page collage of tour diary and dream diary. i'm about 100 pages in, great late night reading.

But he has certainly emboldened the anti-semites, as well as the racists."

	7:26pm Dean: Trump's electorate do not predominantly suffer from crippling debt. He fashioned his populism out of the myth that they do. I kind of get the "smug" characterization, but not fully. He is an activist attorney, and one trait attorneys acquire is a modicum of smugness. But wrong? Greenwald is one of the few journalists/pundits who actually marshals evidence for his argument, again a feature of being an attorney. Hyperbole, too, is essential to an attorney's rhetorical kit. Still, I don't read much of Greenwald as hyperbolic. I don't always agree with him--he reluctantly supported the outcome of Citizens United, for instance--but his tone to me sounds more sarcastic. Then again, I'm mixing his tweets with his more fleshed out articles.

	9:38pm Ike: Yep, VV is in between LP and Vientiane. I took an insanely winding 7-hour bus ride through stunning mountain passes from VV to LP but I had a lot of time on that trip. VV is a little touristy but nice, but if you have limited time, maybe go w/more time in LP since LP is the best.
