Mose Allison is an acquired taste that I haven't fully acquired yet. I appreciate Mose Allison more than I enjoy him. Her voice is an acquired taste, too, and I have floor-to-ceiling cases of it.

Stop this world, let me off
There's just too many pigs in the same trough
There's too many buzzards sitting on the fence
Stop this world, it's not making sense

Stop this show, hold the phone
Better days this lad has known
Better days so long ago
Hold the phone, won't you stop this show

Well, it seems my little playhouse has fallen down
I think my little ship has run aground
I feel like I'm in the wrong place
My state of mind is a disgrace

So won't you stop this game, deal me out
I know too well what it's all about
I know too well that it had to be
Stop this game you know it's ruining me

Well, I got too smart for my own good
I just don't do the things I know I should
There's bound to be some better way
I just got one thing more to say

And that is stop this game, deal me out
I know too well what it's all about
I know too well that it had to be
Stop this game you know it's wrecking me

Of course we little Rawkist became aware of Mose vis song credits - on definitive tracks: 'I'm Not Talking' by the yARdbiRds, Blue Cheer's 'Parchment Farm' - & TheWho's earthquake rendering of 'Young Man Blues'. One of those odd things - that Mose's laidback sark should translate so well into total Heaviness. There's the Blues connection - & the Jazz allowed Instrumentalists to stretch. & - those Lyrics, perfect for Post-Dylanism...
That laidback voice - thick w/ irony(he was a Scorpio) - is no doubt a large part of why he's an 'acquired taste'. I wonder if Randy Newman &/or Warren Zevon felt his influence. He's almost (not quite) like an actual Cool Jazz relation to Tom Lehrer...

Hi hi hi, @doctorjazz! Yeah this album is great. It's kind of amazing how this straight blues emerges from the airy AACM-ness of the rest of the LP.
  10:19am
Dean:

An improv troupe at my high school adopted the commedia del'arte tactic of lazzi, set pieces they could wedge into any given group of circumstances with which they were asked to perform. They were stunningly good, funny, exciting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am

That sounds great, @Dean. I gather there is a rather rigorous framework in place in the UCB improv method.

@Dean I like music to be ambient, preferably from another room so it drifts. As you can tell, I have never spent much money on equipment. Why, when so much was recorded on four track or less.
  11:18am
Dean:

These days, @Brian in UK, I have no choice but to listen from another room, because I'm usually making dinner in the kitchen with the system playing two rooms away and the kids in the intervening room with their crappy devices blaring. My ideal is to plant my butt on the sofa and listen like a paying customer while reading the liner notes or something. That doesn't happen much anymore.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:19am

Yeah, the Utopias are $4k... I tried to get a review pair add well, but the publicity person didn't have them at the time, out to other reviewers. Supposed to sound great. Probably better off NOT getting them, likely want them if I did.
Loved Tiny Bell Trio..
Saw them back in the day, some Knitting Factory jazz fest if I remember correctly.
Richard Thompson did a great, fun show, all requests, some songs he didn't know... Thinking of going to the Ribs And Brisket Review at the City Winery New Year day, saw them once and really liked them.

The joys of not being able to read sleeve notes on these frigging CDs. Worst one I came across was John Grant's first solo. Completely unreadable. Damn crystal cases.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:24am
doctorjazz:

Got to like headphone listening because 1)didn't interfere with all the other stuff going on in the house 2)could do it anywhere, in bed, out walking, didn't need to sit between speakers 3)while you do lose room ambience, the detail you gain is quite amazing.
My $0.02...
  11:25am
Dean:

There is at least one more annoying sound: the whistling of the cold water feed to the washing machine. Probably could fix that, though.

The pinnacle of CD liner notes has to be Graham Johnson's series of Schubert lieder recitals. Dozens of pages per release, and pretty much legible. I believe he more or less compiled them into a scholarly treatise about the songs.

Well - I'm all about streams like this @ home - & podcasts on my iPod when out the door. But w/ big clunky over-the-ear headphones.
Of course - the 20thCentury was about making the Sound Bigger & Bigger - & then digital hit & the object was to Compress it & *take out* as much as you could get away w/ to shrink files...it almost seems like the tech will catch up & it will go back in the Bigger direction again - but not yet...Along w/ the quick & total access comes disposability in content & lower sound quality goes w/ it...altho' ProTools & homogenous (same-sounding) Production - pure featureless surface attributes - are 'quality' to their ears...

Larger files have come, though there is only a niche market for them. CD is 16/44, some music can be purchased in 24/192 and higher bit rates. This is what Neil Young was promoting with the Pono. I always feel bad mentioning stuff like this but I know everyone on GTDR is interested in any possible glitches! Thanks a ton for all music, slightly de-horned or not!
