Totally onboard w/ R.E.M.'s 1st few years.
HipHop...before the Copyright Police came down hard & changed it sonically - & then the self-aggrandizing GangstaBling took over the Universe - it interested me - but not so I ever knew thing one about the entire Genre...Too old a honky I suppose: grew up dreaming of guitars, not turntables: not my Time & Place - tho' we're all in the same Time & Place...I bop when I hear it - but I never ever acquired HipHop to own, for instance (aside from some Beasties rips but what is that)...

Demographic factors aside, I didn't acquire much hip hop or rap simply because the catalog was so vast. In for a penny, in for a pound. It's like asking oneself, "Should I be a Wagner completist?" Not gonna happen.

R.E.M. marked the transition from College Radio to Alternative as a Market Share. When it 1st happened - it was validation. By the time I 1st saw the term 'Adult Alternative' - what did it matter...
@ 1st R.E.M. were DIY Surrealism - not even exact lyrics. That changed. I do have this VHS of them doing an arena-sized concert - & it impressed me how much of that original aesthetic they retained in that context - resonant of Byrds & Velvet Underground & Television @ turns - a summing-up, even. Cobain idolized them for good reason.

i never heard rem until c. 1992, when a coworker was obsessed with it and lent me some records. Life's rich pageant was the one that grabbed me. then murmer, then the 2nd & 3rd; and i thought there was too much crap on the next 3; then they seemed to turn to shit completely.

Directors say they have to tell a Narrative - & now that means dumbing down to Millennials (as they perceive them - &/or claim to be doing) - which is esp. frustrating when the Subject was about the opposite of dumbing down, or filtered transmission...The new Beatles touring years film has frustrated the experts, for instance...Yet - inevitable that everything must get the Treatment now...
