I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

@fred: Glad to hear the health trend is pointed up, at least. We're beaming good vibes to you from North America!

@Mayuko: Yes! That is a very beautiful and soulful photograph by Apperson. It has crystallized the mood for the rest of my day, Thank you!

Hi. Made it here via the email...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm
fred:

I did get a "play vertigo" moment in physical therapy, when I got on a treadmill for the first time ever. I walk fast, so they warned me I might feel dizzy stopping and should bring the speed down over a couple of minutes. Of course I didn't, and had to grab something to avoid crashing down when I stepped away. The very same vertigo thing you talked about. I did slow down later, but not to much, getting that rush was the reward for 30+ minutes of boredom
Avatar 12:19pm

P-90, I made a short trip to Lake George this past summer and learned about him at a small local history museum there. I somehow very strongly got attracted by his photos. Glad you like it too!

Hi, Mayuko. Glad you're back, but happy to report that Bill Mac did excellent fill-ins in your absence.
Anyone ever experience vertigo when driving in a snowstorm at night? It's kind of wild.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm

Local history museums can be hit or miss, but most hits are home runs. We don't have enough of these over here
Avatar 12:23pm

@Ken yep. The only thing that got me through the night were the logging truck tail lights which gave me a drishti point.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
fred:

@Mayuko: I was already pacing myself because of the weird setting, staying at an easy 4mph. I can easily reach 5mph for a while, as the huffing and puffing therapists learned in outdoor walks over wooded hills. I was mean enough to attempt small talk with them then. Then again, I had to get clearance to get out (to see a dance show), and they supported my bid
Avatar 12:36pm
Mayuko:

@fred I like small local history museums, I wanna travel visiting more of those. Even when it's not spectacular, I still like em. It's usually not crowded or often you could be the only visitor at the time, and somehow feels quiet in a particular way like time has stopped or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm

Hi Mayuko and all!
This Sourdure is cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm

Sourdure is pretty great live. His set at Sonic Protest was marred by technical difficulties, but something (ahem WFMU) seems to have made me tolerant of that. The Nihilist Spasm Band will be here next year, I'm very happy to see them again. And Phew will play too! I've never seen her, so that's the main event for me

If anyone is ever near Durham/Chapel Hill North Carolina, one of my favourites is the low brass collection jammed into a wee yellow house (including bolted to the ceiling). It's worth a pilgrimage. simonettitubacollection.com

oh, mayuko. i LOVE small town museums. quirky, fun, and done with pride and whimsy, for the most part.
Avatar 12:41pm

It's the most extensive low brass museum I know of. More Sousaphones than you can shake a stick at. Because there's no room to shake a stick in there, it will fall down a bell for sure.

The town here is renowned as the home of FDR. Besides the National Park site at his residence, the town has a little historical museum. www.townofhydeparkny-historicalsociety.org
Avatar 12:46pm
ifny:

@Mayuko It really is. I shot a lot of film in there. And just kind of meditated. There's something humbling about standing next to a ton of sousaphones. They're like brass pachyderms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
fred:

@glenn: I think that whimsy is what me miss here is France. We're always pleading for approval from the powers that be, even in villages with a few dozen people. No room for quirkiness
Avatar 12:47pm
ifny:

@Flash Strap: let me know what you think of it!
Avatar 12:47pm
Mayuko:

Someone should make an map app to navigate travelers to all the local museums gathering all these information. It probably exists already.
Avatar 12:47pm
ifny:

And if you're there, it's a short jaunt over to the International Museum of Civil Rights in Greensboro. Maybe too big to qualify as a smalltown museum, but it is rife with local history (Greensboro being 1st successful sit-in in 1960 - they've got a replica lunch counter in there and some mind-blowing ephemera). Lavish curator love and hands-on, lived experience vibe. The museum's website: www.sitinmovement.org

Call me skeptical, but running Ada Lovelace code looks like a litmus test to me. I saw enough people lose hair over porting music code from the 80's to realize code and hardware go together
Avatar 1:06pm
northguineahills:

Here's an IRCAM quote for you Fred: "The studio pioneers of Cologne (NWDR) and Paris (IRCAM) were conscientiously and meticulously laying the foundations of what today constitutes the vast majority of modern music, mainstream or otherwise, pop or academic, from Kylie Minogue to Can, from Ricardo Villalobos to the Mnemonists, from Kraftwerk through hiphop auteurslike Jay Dee aka Dilla." (David Stubbbs, 'Fear of Music: Why People get Rothko but Don't Get Stockhausen', 2009)

@NGH: I buy the meticulous side. The conscientious side is post-hoc BS. Even Boulez knew it was a long shot, but worth taking. I don't think he had a choice, it was his calling. Their influence in tech was huge, but unintended

Mayuko these Apperson shots put me in mind of Eadweard Muybridge, not because he was a conservationist. He took many pictures in places like Yosemite but was not averse to chopping down a tree that was spoiling a good view for the shot. He beat the rap on justifyable homicide and then took those famous horse shots that prempted the moving pictures.
