Doug Schulkind:

Our brother Evan Crankshaw, host of Explorers Room here on the Drummer Stream, was an early champion of the William Onyeabor revival, well before the current fetishization of him (and Luaka Bop's reissues). Evan presented a mega-post of Onyeabor's releases back in 2012: flashstrap.blogspot.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm

Doug! I wonder if *that*'s where I got my massive MP3 collection ... I'll bet it is!

Oh man, I'm down. Onyeabor was great. When Bogeda Pop is over, I will program the few albums i have... especially Good Name. RIP

I wonder what led to Onyeabor not releasing any albums for the last thirty years.... as far as I know. My albums don't come with notes, just music

well I was merely a messenger, a courier of good tunes. Many of mine came from Feq'wah and this other guy, Big Head something

little known fact: if you look at the Luaka Bop Who Is William Onyeabor? LP jacket, I am thanked twice. For what, I do not know

Also: Onyeabor does not seem like a very nice guy, which disappointed me to learn (perhaps we should not have asked the question Who Is William Onyeabor?), but he did make some exceptionally good records, and for that I will always love him

I smell a new volume of Cover the Earth brewing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Doug Schulkind:

I took much pleasure from Onyeabor's music, but I loathed the way Luaka Bop framed the (re)discovery of his music. (The label's president, Yale Evelev, is the uncle of an ex-FMU deejay.) Get a load of this distasteful Onyeabor "Gift Shop": williamonyeabor.com...

Gary:

Wow, what's up with the pomade and candle

sometimes nice people make great records. sometimes terrible people make great records.

it's the way of the world.
Avatar 8:13pm
hyde:

(not that i'm saying william onyeabor is a terrible person. i don't know enough to make that judgement).
Avatar 8:13pm
Scraps:

Yeah, I think I first heard of Onyeabor at Comb and Razor back in 2008. I went there to verify, and another post seems to back up Onyeabor Not a Nice Guy:

"(For example, if you look through the archives here, you might notice all posts on a certain Mr. William Onyeabor have been crossed out. There is a reason for that. I won't get into details right now but let's just say that that man damn near killed my spirit.)"

Well, dayum.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
melinda:

At first I thought this was a German cover of If I Were a Carpenter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
Doug Schulkind:

My memory may be faulty here, but I seem to recall that Luaka Bop produced a short promo film featuring Uchenna Ikonne of the Comb & Razor blog traveling to Nigeria to "find" Onyeabor. After some pretty lame fake detective work, Ikonne ends up at Onyeabor's compound, only to learn that the former musician has found God and is not interested in the least in his old career. The film, I felt, was more than mildly disrespectful. Luaka Bop needed a hook to sell the music, so they invented this mystery, both before they found the man, and then after they discovered he wasn't into being the subject of their marketing campaign.

Uchenna Ikonne, though, is a good fellow. In fact, his generosity led to my African Twang marathon premium a few years back.
Avatar 8:22pm
Flash Strap:

@Doug: Woof, that shop. When I went to the Luaka Bop offices a few years back, they were really nice and interesting to talk to, etc., but they gave me one of those Onyeabor "bibles" (just a dollar store bible with an Onyeabor cover glued on) and a bunch of Onyeabor "bucks"! FAKE DOLLARS

i mean, i find that ideologically distasteful to the extreme, but it was also just tacky

@Scraps: i know a guy who played with Onyeabor on the new Bop shows and he said about the same thing. Should have left that mystery unsolved, man.

On the other hand, they really are some of the greatest albums I have ever heard, and I listen to records by worse people for sure. Just one of those wrinkles of the world
Avatar 8:25pm
Scraps:

Oh yeah. I'm not getting rid of the albums!
Avatar 8:28pm
Flash Strap:

@Doug again: agreed on the film and the goodness of Mr. Comb & Razor. I think Who Is William Onyeabor? could have been a good hook too, if the question had been left unanswered, or at least only partially answered
  8:30pm
MrFab:

Is turning a major talent into a goofy cartoon how one successfully markets to the "World Music" crowd? "Look at the funny African clown!" Kinda thought we were past that by now...

That Sylva Balassanian brought to mind Esther Lamandier, who skirted the edges of the early music trend of the later 20th century. Gotta remember to play her albums more often.

Hi. So what odds would you all give us to survive to 2020 without a nuclear apocalypse? And when the roaches evolve into something intelligent to replace us in a billion years, what will their music sound like?

That's an amazing looking comp, Jeff: www.discogs.com...

@hyde: you know who started at Homestead, iirc? The current proprietor of AUM Fidelity records. (Got it to jazz in two comments!)

@Gary: Hi! I can give you the hook-up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Gary:

Also, Jeff, you gotta call me about that thing
Avatar 9:28pm

If the smart roaches dig up the comp "Human Music" in the far distant future, they'll think all human music sounded like that, so I hope it represents all 7 billion of us well.

Better that than Papa Roach*

I'm catching a whiff of Roman Jacobson in your comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Jeff Golick:

@Gary, on the dark tip, and also re poetry, have you heard the Moor Mother record "Fetish Bones," out last year?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Gary:

@Dean, maybe filtered through George Steiner?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
Gary:

@Jeff ... I have *not* ... can I Bandcamp it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
Jeff Golick:

...why, YES: moormothergoddess.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
Jeff Golick:

Meanwhile, this song is about drinking sangria near Rio, right? My Spanish is rusty, my Portuguese nonexistent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Gary:

River of Blood! <--------------[armchair translator's belief]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Gary:

That said, I like your idea better
  9:51pm
Dean:

If filtered, then Steiner was faithful to Jacobson's scheme. (Haven't read either in ages.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Jeff Golick:

So that means sangria is just blood with fruit in it? (I keep trying to lower the bar, but Dean keeps raising it.)
Avatar 9:52pm
hyde:

i took intro Portuguese in college ca. 1982 or so. which means...i got nothing to add.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
Gary:

I haven't read Jacobson, but was a huge fan of After Babel ... I'm guessing any "ideas" I might have regarding translation and related were probably gleaned from that book
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
Gary:

Sangria is fruity blood from the fruit bat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
Gary:

So, technically, it's a song about Brazilian vampires
  9:54pm
Dean:

"Lower the bar..." I see what you did there, Jeff G. I'm willing to bet I read a good bit of Jacobson ... in a bar!
Avatar 9:55pm
