Where's Baby?
Avatar 11:02am
Listener Baby:

My listener friends out there. I know most you you reading this are not the the folks who should need to read this. I believe this fundraiser is one of the most important days of the year, and one of this nation's most important days to benefit art and community..
These men and women of WFMU do an astounding amount of good for all of us, 365 days a year. Genre-less, free-form, commercial-free radio of every manner conceivable, on a platter, any time you want some. This radio station has 5 or 6 paid employees! Everyone else involved is a dedicated volunteer. Some of these people have multiple decades of time and effort logged in as cornerstones of WFMU.
If you don't admire Michael Shelley, Gaylord Fields, Dave the Spazz, Mr. Fine Wine, Bob Brainen, Becky, Glen Jones, Ken, and a host of others, I can't imagine who you do actually admire? These folks run this amazing place on a shoestring, and it should not be the case. They ask us once or twice a year for a little help. If everyone who actually listens and understands that WFMU makes their life better, gave a little a money, WFMU would be an even better place. Imagine WFMU as even better?? I'd like to see what that looks like. Please.. Everyone, give something today.
Good morning Baby, good morning Matt, and good morning Frank.
Peace.

I recently shared a contemporary track with another artist, who's work from 50 year ago was sampled for it. I thought he'd be interested. He was pissed about being ripped off.

Give 'till ur Eyes Bleed! You don't need good sight tp see Great Radio!!!
  11:40am
Listener Robert:

Good pitch, Baby. I thought some years ago about submitting my own pitch, but there's something about how I lay stuff out that tends to come out double-edged, so I don't know if a pitch like mine would help or hurt.
  11:41am
Listener Robert:

What it is is, I'm not a salesman. I try to put myself in the place of what I think might sell to ME, which is possibly a too-honest & dispassionate appraisal of things.
  11:46am
Listener Robert:

Even in science, I've been criticized for not being a strong enough advocate for what I'm presenting. I lay out my doubts about my own stuff.

Sometimes my doubts turn out to be right, as after my boss had me submit to present at a conference when I'd've held off for more data. Sure enough, soon after my submission, I did a control experiment which showed that what was going into the conference book was sheer artifact -- which is why you don't go by conference book articles!
  11:47am
Marc15:

I unfriend Trump supporters on Facebook
  11:50am
Listener Robert:

I snicker because for all the anti-Trump sentiment here, the improvement in the economy is why people can afford to pledge more than last year.

That's how it often is with non-profits & even for-profit businesses: trying to analyze why they do better some times than others. It's frequently economic factors completely beyond their control.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am
Fuzzy:

correlation <> causation
  11:54am
Listener Robert:

For instance, I've seen this in enrollment in children's football. People look at trends & try to tease out whether families are being scared off by ill-founded fears of brain damage, but a big factor is whether families can afford to spend on (or donate to) luxuries like that in a given year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am
Uncle Michael:

Right on, Fuzzy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am
Fuzzy:

I mouse-pledged this week because dude, it's a dollar a day -- my Snickers bar habit costs more per year than that. Trump had nothing to do with it, that's for sure.
  11:56am
Listener Robert:

That's true, Fuzzy, and investment is all about anticipation, which may be correct or incorrect. The same goes for the budgeting for what you do. You can only estimate many future expenses based on history.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2024 Swag For Life Member 11:57am

So anyway, back to the marathon. Pop4's track is one of my faves on Michael's premium.

Lynnester Jeff:

Hey listener Robert - so: CTE and quarterly growth don't exist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm
Uncle Michael:

Please...with the politics. It'll drive people out of the comments during this important time.
  12:01pm
Listener Robert:

The political "friending" thing reminds me of something I found ridiculous: in the 1960s, a future friend of mine, gave an ultimatum to all his friends saying he'd no longer be friends with them if they supported RM Nixon. I could never see the political trumping the personal like that in my life; I could be personally friendly with Hitler, Stalin, Castro, etc. if we had stuff to share.

But FACEBOOK is so trivial, I laugh at the whole concept of friending/unfriending there.
  12:04pm
Listener Robert:

Is neurology also un-pledger-friendly now, Michael? Do the discussions of other things distract newbies from the "pledge" button? If you think so, I'll get back to work.

Mr Rickman looks a little latter day Michael Jacksonish. IMHO
  12:11pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Uncle Michael:

Or Harambe the Swiss mountaineer.
  12:20pm
Listener Robert:

What was funny to me was Ken's characterizing those figures as crawling on hands & knees across a desert. I thought they were just short people with long arms, swaying to the music in the Swiss Alps.

And when I hear of Alan Rickman, I think of the actor Allen Rickman, whom I knew originally from the Libertarian Party of NY; I'm just dimly aware there's an Alan. Alan wasn't in "I Was a Teenage Zombie", but Allen was.

Uncle Michael:

It's power pop if you answer the question "what Beatles song defines power pop?" with "Birthday".

Arguably - Rawk. They helped loose the 'Roll' in 1965 - tho' they covered the Pirates what have you (not absolute).

I used to listen wfmu all the time at work. Maybe that's why I've been out of work for 5 months.

...I guess some bands do PowerPop - but not exclusively - while others are defined by it...Has always intrigued me that TheBeatles are the BiggestThingForever - while others aspiring to their stylee - &/or similar - struggle to Chart @ all - but maybe PowerPop is more successful that way than I think...

Brothers & Sisters: Swag For Life. You pay only a little - minimum $10, or more - once a month - *&* - it's the Best thing for WFMU as it gives it a constant drip of finance. Especially those who listen but don't donate - give it a thot. If even every loyal Listener did only this - it would make all the difference. We don't just want this thing to survive - we want it to thrive. It's insane - a miracle what WFMU does, & how much better it is - @ a fraction of the budget of other more conventionally funded (read: CORPORATE & ridden w/ Commercials, &tc.) stations. Let me level w/ you: I forgot to get a career & I have a real hard time - but I need this - all the more for that. I'm all in. Do it for all of us.
