A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

This is the only time of year that I miss living next to Branch Brook Park even a little. One of the nicest parts of the park is accessed by taking the light rail to the Branch Brook stop, then taking the cross-tracks walkway to the northeastern exit at Grafton Ave., then walk north. (Basically go to the area across the street from Clara Maass Medical Ctr.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am

i remember this Eddie Grant tune in the charts when i was about 13, had no idea what it was about... now i've got some historical perspective - the Brixton riots of '81 or '82 took place around an actual Electric Avenue

Passaic River Blues:

@Melinda: agreed. It's really good, and elaborates some of my undeveloped thoughts about this story. I subscribe to the Hyperallergic email list (thanks to Trouble!) but did not read this before. It considers the criticism on its own terms, and grants how complicated matters of representation can be.

This is a good pull quote: "There’s a fundamental misunderstanding at work in damning abstraction by associating it with erasure and irresponsibility. Abstraction, like mimeticism, is an aesthetic language that can be interpreted and used politically in a range of ways. It doesn’t necessarily mean erasure, but it does complicate the connection between perception and intellection".
