This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hey, Flash!

Dang, was looking forward to Lewiston stuff, but gotta catch a bus!

this first set is in tribute to a great explorer of sound who just this week marched into the hereafter. David Lewiston. www.nonesuch.com...

Hi Dean, Hi Doc!

Sorry about the bus Dean

Lewiston? I hope that's not Lewiston Maine where as an ill advised teenager I went to see the Grateful Dead at the place where Sonny Liston once fought Muhammad Ali. (actually it was fun)
Avatar 7:04pm
Flash Strap:

haha this stuff is so wild
Avatar 7:05pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde! Not that Lewiston, rest assured. Does sound fun though
Avatar 7:07pm
hyde:

ah, David Lewiston. Cool. It *was* fun, though luckily for me i jettisoned the Dead for hardcore punk rock soon after. (Apologies to Dead fans.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
doctorjazz:

This is really bizarre sounding-if someone from the Chicago AACM/avant garde recorded it, you'd feel right at home.
Avatar 7:09pm
Flash Strap:

Totally get what you mean, Doc

oh, btw, helpful liner notes on this LP: Recorded in Colombia, Ecuador and Brazil.

Throughout South America, the descendants of the millions of slaves brought to the New World by the Spanish and Portuguese still pay homage to the pantheon of their African ancestors, often, albeit, under the identities of Christian saints.

@Hyde-por que no los dos, as my daughter would say? I followed the dead in the early 70's, went for punk later in the decade, but was still listening to the Dead afterwards (though there was a long span I didn't listen much, 90's and 00's, listen some again now).
Avatar 7:19pm
Flash Strap:

I never really got into the Dead or hardcore, so i had neither. I do love the Rhythm Devils, though

But I guess if you never saw the Dead live or attended a hardcore show, which I have not, you just have no idea about either scene.
Avatar 7:20pm
hyde:

@doctorjazz hehe. i was seventeen, and listened to a lot of jazz and 60's music at that time. (i mean, i saw Sun Ra in 1980 too!) i just kind of soured on the whole Dead thing by 1981, and rejected it. some of it still sounds OK (i actually listened to the Lewiston show on the Internet Archive a couple months ago and it was fine. SOme of it was good.) but there's just a lot of noodling and baggage that goes along with that whole package that just isn't my thing anymore, that's all.
Avatar 7:20pm
jefff:

man this is cool
Avatar 7:23pm
hyde:

@Flash well, tomorrow night i'm going to see Jerry's Kids, who were one of the seminal Boston hardcore bands I used to go see circa 1983 or so. we'll see how that stands up!

i'm not slam dancing though, that's a young man's game
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
doctorjazz:

Sounds like fun
Went to see Phil Lesh a few months ago, that was fun (he had Stanley Jordan on guitar, interesting mix).
Saw Sun Ra many times in the 80's, he used to play all sorts of clubs in Manhattan; man, that was amazing!

Jerry's Kids is such a good name for a hardcore outfit.

Hi JtotheK! Wonderful to see you!

This version of Talking Heads was pretty amazing. (saw the earlier version a few times)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Listener Scott:

This is one of the best live shows ever. Most (all?) of it's available on Youtube too. They're all so relaxed, and Belew was having the time of his life.
Avatar 7:35pm
Flash Strap:

or should I say Hi Jefff!

@doc: it really is. this performance almost edges out all other versions for me, honestly, except that they're all too good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
Listener Scott:

I just saw Belew at the Iridium, he's still incredible.
Avatar 7:35pm
hyde:

@doc jazz yeah, the guy we stay with in Boston is going to see some leftover Dead band bunch that is playing at Fenway this summer. i'm not sure what the band is, but i imagine it's that same bunch.

i only saw Sun Ra once, at Mass Art. it may have been 1979, not 1980.

i'm amused that as i'm reminiscing about all this that Flash is playing Talking Heads ca. 1980. i saw the Remain in Light tour too at the Orpheum in Boston, haha
Avatar 7:36pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Listener Scott! I was watching those videos and just dying, they're so good. And yeah, Belew always looks like he's in a state of grace. or rapture
Avatar 7:40pm
Flash Strap:

there's a video of this performance as well, Belew is on fire and Bowie is just cracking up watching him play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Listener Scott:

Born under punches and Crosseyed and Painless from that Rome show are the standouts on the video.
Avatar 7:41pm
Flash Strap:

totally agree, Scott
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Listener Scott:

At the Belew show I sat near some guys who attend Belew's "camp" each year, I think in Woodstock. They had a lot of interesting stories, and had a great take on why Belew doesn't tour with Fripp. Basically, Fripp makes the entire touring group practice each day for two weeks, 6 hours a day, so they sound like they're in the studio when they play live. Belew far too loose for that sort of regimentation.
Avatar 7:44pm
hyde:

wait, what? i live in Woodstock! i have never heard of this, though i'm really not plugged in up here. dang.
Avatar 7:45pm
Flash Strap:

huh, that makes sense. I know Belew is a huge part of the King Crimson (v.2) sound, but it just does nothing for me, and I suspect that's why. On the other hand, the only time I really groove on Fripp is when Bowie or Eno have him totally off guard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm

@Flash fwiw i actually saw that King Crimson band play too maybe ca. 1986 in Amherst, and it was pretty great. but you could tell there was a total dichotomy between cool Fripp and hot Belew on stage, like Scott says
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Little Danny:

Whoa I had no idea Jean-Michel Jarre sounded like THIS
Avatar 7:51pm
Flash Strap:

Hi LD!

@Hyde: I bet it was great, and seeing it live would probably be the best way to find your way into that kind of music. at least, it would be for me I think
Avatar 7:51pm
hyde:

@Scott ah, Big Indian. well, that's not too far from here. maybe 15 miles.
Avatar 7:52pm
Flash Strap:

@LD: I love pretty much all of Jarre's prime-years work, but this album is totally, astonishingly unique and special. You'd love it, man
Avatar 7:53pm
Flash Strap:

of course, Laurie being on this totally MAKES it
Avatar 7:56pm
hyde:

@Flash yeah, it was cool. and the more i think about it, it had to be earlier than '86. maybe late 81 early 82, because i think it was before Beat. i was never a huge King Crimson guy, but it was sort of when they had their second act

Flash Strap:

some notes on Belew's soloing here:

"The variable is Adrian Belew, who came to the Lodger sessions some time after recording had started. Taking a cue from Robert Fripp’s improvisational work on “Heroes,” Bowie, Tony Visconti and Eno used a similar tactic, not letting Belew hear any of the tracks before he soloed on them, not even giving him a key or chords as clues. So Belew, alone in the studio and being monitored by closed-circuit cameras, ripped out the solos for “DJ,” Boys Keep Swinging” and “Red Sails” in three takes each. He was cut off just as he was growing familiar with each song.

Belew’s various solos were then dissected, with Bowie and Visconti taking the shards they thought fit a particular section and dubbing them in. The result, like the tremolo-laden, joyous Belew patchworks in “Red Sails,” was somehow perfect—the solos sound as if they were crafted beforehand, but keep their sense of barely-controlled energy. It’s waves of thought being voiced on strings." bowiesongs.wordpress.com...

Off the bus, out of the car, errands run, home, catching up with comments and playlist. Re: Hyde's comments, I brag incessantly, usually on Uncle Michael's show, that I attended every Grateful Dead concert. Didn't miss one. I was with hyde at that Maine show. More plausibly, I also spent time in punk, at the advent of the LA scene. Fond memories.

Not sure what prompted the Belew set, and I'm not a big fan, but he adds interesting spice to a track on a live Robert Palmer album.

David Gould was originally in the Boston ska/Reggae band, John Brown's Body". He first made "Adonai" as a regular Jewish reggae record. Zorn asked him to make a dub version. It took multiple versions as Zorn kept on asking for "more dub!". Finally, Zorn dubbed it out himself, and it sold better then Gould's original.
