	10:49pm Doug Schulkind: Speaking of Coltrane, now seems as good a time as any to announce that, beginning Friday, June 16, and running for five consecutive Fridays — in five one-hour installments beginning at 11am (eastern)... I will be airing the 5-part John Coltrane documentary Tell Me How Long Trane's Been Gone. It is simply spectacular. One of the most profoundly meaningful presentations of a creative artist's life and work I have ever encountered. I first aired it a decade ago and will be re-broadcasting it now to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Coltrane's passing, on July 17, 1967. Because it is still commercially available (directly from the producer), I will not be archiving the broadcast of this documentary. Make plans now to sit near your devices and streaming speakers 11am-noon (ET) for five consecutive Fridays, beginning June 16.

	11:10pm coelacanth∅: when i was about 10 my older brother and his friends scored 2 vintage jukeboxes during the annual "junk week" in our town (as well as much amazing other stuff) -one from the mid sixties and one from the late 50s, which had a few doowop 45s in it. i still have fantasies about using them in my own little pub - though they're not in the family any more...and i'll probably never own a pub.
	11:17pm MrFab: Lenny Kaye stocked the CBGB jukebox with the actual 45s he used for 'Nuggets.' That would certainly be a contender for the Greatest Jukebox Ever.

	11:21pm Uncle Michael: In a way, Lenny's original Nuggets had an unintended consequence of creating a certain kind of canon that established a tiny (very worthy) subset of songs as a kind of garage rock magnetic north, almost in that weird way that the American Graffiti soundtrack did for -50s rock and roll. Both collections had an out-sized influence.

	11:33pm Little Danny: Oh, absolutely UM. Nuggets was such a crucial (and early) entry point into garage band stuff
	11:34pm Little Danny: Yeah I'm on a "Comin' Home Baby" tangent
	11:34pm Dean: Your implication, UM, is that influence ought to be proportionate, correcting for marketing, hype, gossip, etc. In other words, you're saying, there's an appropriate level of influence beyond which no more. But there isn't. It just is. And I'm not sure Lenny didn't intend the result.

	11:39pm Dano59: UM : I'll only say re Nuggets setting the canon, that nothing succeeds like success. I suppose the modern analogue may be NOW That's What I Call Music! before overkill and repetitive formulaic content ossified the whole thing...
	11:40pm Uncle Michael: My point is that Lenny could have included this track, or left of another...and altered canon, by happenstance or design. For a whole lot of people too young to have been steeped in that music in its time...and/or geographically removed from records that were only regionally known, that collection was the entry point. This is not a judgment of merit, just an observation. The collection found an audience. Had it not, its influence would have been minor. If memory serves, it found a bigger audience when reissued at a time when there were musical trends that were reverberations of the album's ilk. I think the original release kind of sank.
	11:41pm MrFab: I don't think you can intentionally create a cultural phenomenon. Lawd knows many try...
	11:41pm Dano59: The same could be said of Harry Smith! He was only saving 78s from oblivion. With a purpose and aesthetic goals, of course. Even though, there are now canonical songs like Rose Connelly that are NOT (but should have been, following this logic) on the Anthology of Am Folk Music.
	11:42pm Uncle Michael: I'm grateful for Nuggets. It's doubtful anyone would have done a better job with the roadmap than Lenny. I'm grateful for every single shitty garage 45 tat appeared on Boulders, Pebbles, Debris, etc. etc.
	11:42pm coelacanth∅: i never did hear any of those nuggets collections. i learned of the songs bit by bit, mostly from the radio. (wpix in the late 70s and wfmu in the 80s) ...i did buy an album early on though, before that, called "wild thing", from my record club, as a teen. it's got some major players on it. ...this one: www.discogs.com...
	11:43pm Dano59: Nowadays there are too many garage comps ... and I doubt ANYONE among the original artists or writers is getting paid...
	11:44pm Dean: That's how canons work. Picking and choosing. Nobody chooses the "real" canon. The influence is always "out-sized," precisely because the selected set stands in for the full population.

	11:45pm Uncle Michael: Mot of my comp collections aren't even commercial releases. I don't care whether or not the artists are paid. If they are, great. But at bottom, I'm grateful the cultural artifacts are simply unearthed. Jeffrey Glenn's "Lost Jukebox" series, anyone?
	11:48pm Uncle Michael: Dean, rarely does one archivist or academic get to establish a canon. Normally this is something that happens by many hands over a long period. Again, this is just an observation. What Lenny was able to do, I find unusual.
	11:48pm MrFab: Wow, that 'Wild Thing' comp was a straight-up ripoff of Nuggets, put out by a major label even. Here was my first comp: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Goofy-Greats/release/1607696 Saw a tv ad for it and asked mom to buy it for me. First time I saw the Cramps once and they started the show with 2 songs from it.
	11:49pm Dano59: Oh, I'm totally grateful for the unearthed. I own bootlegs, like one of the 'Billy' LPs and a Whyte Boots/Girls 45 that I think Norton carried. Lenny and Billy Miller were definitely cut from the same cloth!
	11:50pm Uncle Michael: Kogar's "Lux & Ivy's Favorites" series is indispensable tuff, too.
	11:51pm Dano59: And Goofy Greats gathers a canon of its own. Flound one at the library sale last year. (Where K-Tel releases go to live on)

	11:10pm coelacanth∅: when i was about 10 my older brother and his friends scored 2 vintage jukeboxes during the annual "junk week" in our town (as well as much amazing other stuff) -one from the mid sixties and one from the late 50s, which had a few doowop 45s in it. i still have fantasies about using them in my own little pub - though they're not in the family any more...and i'll probably never own a pub.

Both collections had an out-sized influence.

	11:40pm Uncle Michael: My point is that Lenny could have included this track, or left of another...and altered canon, by happenstance or design. For a whole lot of people too young to have been steeped in that music in its time...and/or geographically removed from records that were only regionally known, that collection was the entry point. This is not a judgment of merit, just an observation. The collection found an audience. Had it not, its influence would have been minor. If memory serves, it found a bigger audience when reissued at a time when there were musical trends that were reverberations of the album's ilk. I think the original release kind of sank.

	11:48pm Uncle Michael: Dean, rarely does one archivist or academic get to establish a canon. Normally this is something that happens by many hands over a long period. Again, this is just an observation. What Lenny was able to do, I find unusual.

First time I saw the Cramps once and they started the show with 2 songs from it.
