@annie: depending on what you'd pay to upgrade, I'd say TCM is def worth springing for. And the recent "patriotic" stuff was holiday-themed for July 4th, they do seasonal and occasional stuff like that.

We had moved to northern NJ from the Castle Hill/Parkchester section of the Bronx nearly exactly 2 yrs before the blackout. Good timing! My dad likely would've been stuck in lower Manhattan. I was in my parents basement in New Jersey (no, my bedroom was upstairs where it always was; I had a workbench down there.) All of a sudden the radio station went of the air. I went upstairs and the TV had gone off the air. Managed to find a New Jersey radio station and learned the situation. All hell was breaking loose in bad nabes, people were sashaying around in candlelight in good nabes, and all I knew was that I was glad it was my night off from a job at a Times Square movie palace.

Lady Aster's, on Aster Place. Lights flickered and died -- went up onto the street just in time to catch the lights blinking out in big chunks up the avenue. Wandered back to my second street stoop and sat out there for awhile with neighbors and a transistor. Some friends came by with the idea to go down to South Ferry and get on the Staten Island Ferry so that we could look back and see the blacked out skyline. Walked down to the end of the island only to find out the ferry's loading apparatus was electric so not operational. Spooky. I remember being in Battery Park and noticing how weird it was to hear approaching footsteps but be unable to see who was coming. I guess the East Village at the time would count as a "bad" neighborhood, but I don't remember being scared -- it was all a weird adventure.

For the, what, 2003, 2005 blackout, I was working in Midtown. Got to the bus station moments before the power went. Walked up the dead escalator, waited for my Bergen County bus, figuring, shit, the tunnel is still a tunnel, right? Right; boarded, headed out, got home late due to dead traffic signals thru Jerz, but it was broad daylight so navigation was no prob. Slept over my parents' (1 town over they had power; outages very patchwork in Bergen.)
