I have Part 1 of this in reserve for the weekend but I am looking forward to Part 2! Between this and Evan's dub-a-thon last night, it has been a very good week for genres I dig!

Gary:

Hey, James! Hope we can hit somewhere in the vicinity of your expectations!

doctorjazz:

Loving these sounds! I'd dance, but I don't know how...
  9:22am
Mark Williams:

i just never think of cocaine and that part of the world together. What sort of punishment should she expect?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am
Gary:

Well, probably none -- I glanced over another article that said the authorities were trying to determine whether it was for personal use or not ... presumably personal use would be excused. She was let go ... not sure if she's expected back to go to court or anything, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am
Gary:

... and, HI MARK!
  9:25am
Mark Williams:

hello Gary. I've not listened to your show before, so I'm happy to make the acquaintance.

Doug Schulkind:

Hi, Gary! Thank you SO much for getting up so early and filling in for me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am

Doug! Honored to do so ... I'm usually up by 6, but just not *talking out loud* before 11 am or so ... :)

Good morning Gary. I'm very pleased to be able to catch your show live for a change

Big thanks to Tim Abdellah Fuson and David Larsen who translated this singer's name and album / song titles for me

WebHam Henry! Fred! So nice to see you guys!

Kicking ass this morning, Gary, both in playlist and in talking out loud earlier than scheduled!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am
Gary:

Ha ... well, I got another glass of water, so hopefully voice will be more "fluid" next mic break
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am
melinda:

I usually don't begin talking out loud until after 10 or 11 am either, sometimes wonder if it might be a good idea to do a practice vocalization beforehand since I work in retail and don't want to sound croaky when I first speak to a customer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am
melinda:

But it happens.

Mmm, might have to head out right after the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am

Hey Gary, can you recommend a particular compilation of Oum Kalthoum's music for the uninformed (me). It seems like most of the stuff I find is out of print or otherwise a pain to acquire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am
Gary:

Man, Polyus, that's a tough one. Let me think about it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am
Polyus:

Obviously there is a ton of stuff YT and such places, but I'd like a physical copy of something.

Brian in UK:

Hello Gary. What part of Morocco does this music come from? Apart from Casablanca.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
fred:

@Polyus: That's a tough one because so many of her "songs" are quite long. I'd recommend getting Inta Omri, either on its own or as part of a box set. It's a classic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am
Gary:

Brian, I don't really know -- let's maybe look up Cheba Maria and see what we can find online ...

Somebody brought amazing hummus to an FMU party once. It was from a place in Red Hook called Mazzat. Best hummus in NYC that I know of -- but a bit of a pain in the butt to get to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am
Brian in UK:

Gary, the reason I asked was that we were thinking of going to Morocco sometime and I wondered whether Casablanca, Marrakech, Essaouira or wherever was the home of the hits!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am
Brian in UK:

Ike if you will pardon me saying, you are eating it wrong. (lame attempt at Doug pun)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am
Gary:

Ah, well, I'm not entirely sure where the Moroccan music industry is situated ... too bad Tim isn't here this morning; he'd probably have the answer. I do know that Cheba Maria started out in Casablanca before moving to France
Avatar 10:43am
βrian:

You need to go to the Detroit/Ann Arbor area if you want the best hummus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
Gary:

And I need to get there for the CDs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am

Hi Gary and the Gang.
How about some cheesy music from Khartoum like Mohamed Wardi?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am

I don't think Samira will mind, either way, DrJ
Avatar 10:58am

Maybe it's time for an Essaouira WFMU meetup?
Avatar 11:00am

Essaouira December or January suits me fine. I know places to stay etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am

George, sounds good, we are in the process of trying to move right now but in the future.

I don't think it's an accident that this all comes across like overheated, overwrought reality TV. It's the final season of The Apprentice -- but this time with nuclear weapons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
Gary:

I vote for the total annihilation of planet earth if it means never having to see Mitch McConnell's face ever again

Alex In Illinois:

Scaramouche! Scaramouche! Can you do the Fandago!
Isn't that what Queen sings in Bohemian Rhapsody?
That is what comes to my mind whenever Scaramucci is mentioned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am

Alex! And, oh, man, Farmers Market in Maine must be edibleincredible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am

I believe Doug played the first Fadoul ever on FMU -- from a clip found on eBay, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am
Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
Good friend to all good music, Adam Lore, the fellow behind 50 Miles of Elbow Room, is the chap who hipped me to the Fadoul audio shared on eBay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
