Carmichael:

Heya Jeff. This sounds very mellow, Windham Hill-ish in a way. Which is nice.
Avatar 12:07am
Jeff Conklin:

Morning, Carmichael. Windham Hill would be a much cleaner recording ;). This guy was cool, pressed up a couple hundred records and would often leave them on trails in California for folks to pick up.
  12:08am
MONEYBAG$:

just got out of MSG and am trying to pick up the station on a crank powered radio,no joke. It's not working out.
Avatar 12:08am
Jeff Conklin:

@Moneybags: HAHA! Crank that motherfucker!
  12:10am
MONEYBAG$:

the sound of nitrous tanks would overwhelm it anyway
Avatar 12:10am
Ike:

Agreed, Carm! I'm not afraid to admit I have a soft spot for some Windham Hill-ish stuff. Although I don't endorse littering it on trails! LOL.

Hey all, I'm live with y'all. I'm usually a Monday morning archive kind of guy. Let's do this.
  12:12am
KP:

Hey, Jeff
  12:12am
Carmichael:

The idea is pretty cool, though. Some random recording you find while walking the Pacific Crest trail, and it turning out quite listenable.
Avatar 12:13am
still b/p:

I know folks who maintain "trail magic" traditions by leaving donuts and muffins and such on the trail for Appalachian Trail thru-hikers. Like to see the faces of music finders at discovery time.
Avatar 12:15am
Erik in MIchigan:

That story about the dude leaving records on the trail is unreal! Any more info on that?
Avatar 12:16am
Ike:

I got one of those crank radios after Sandy and it was disappointingly lame -- it has to be cranked about every 30-60 seconds! IDK if they're all like that. Maybe prepper maniacs have better ones.
Avatar 12:18am
Jeff Conklin:

Well, the records don't attract bears whereas those donuts and muffins....
Avatar 12:20am
Jeff Conklin:

Hey, there are a lot of good records on Windham Hill, most have the name George Cromarty, Daniel Hecht and William Ackerman on them...
Avatar 12:20am
still b/p:

When the shit goes down, someone'll kill you for an apple or can of beans, but they'll pass on your radio. (As my neighbor unkindly said when my bike vanished mysteriously for a few hours last year: "Your bike...who'd steal that bike...?")

re: bears -- didn't Eno do "Music for Hibernation?"

Here's the article I found: http://www.tompkinssquare.com/deitrick1.html

Jeff - you hear the new Dave's Picks - "close encounters show" yet? Just listened today...really blown away. 78 has peaks as high as any year post hiatus...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26am
chris_in_space:

@still b/p: I dunno. There is some value to be had from most any thing, to someone. Whether it's valuable to you or not, well, that's another thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28am
chris_in_space:

@still b/p: that said, a guy's gotta eat
Avatar 12:28am
Jeff Conklin:

@Erik: Havent heard the actual release but am very familiar with that show...the Dead never played a bad show in Oregon!
  12:31am
Clint in Reno:

I was camping in Lassen Volcanic Nat'l Park two weeks ago and found a copy of John Fahey's Voice of the Turtle. Only half of this story is true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32am
chris_in_space:

I have never understood the hype over 77-78 shows. The piano always sounded like ass in the mix, so many long Not Fade's at half-speed tempo, a bloated sound really taking root overall. Give me 73-74 any day.
Avatar 12:34am
Jeff Conklin:

@Chris: I suggest checking out the Morgantown and Dartmouth shows from 78.
Avatar 12:34am
still b/p:

@ chris -- That's what I said about my bike. If some criminally inclined middle-of-the-night passerby sees an opportunity, I don't think he appraises the item closely or calculates the deed's cost-benefit. I think he wants either a handy ride, or any measly dollars he can get for it later. Value enough. (Bike rematerialized in front of residence within hours and I never knew where it went or with whom.)
Avatar 12:34am
Jeff Conklin:

@Clint: Nice! (about the camping, not your bold-faced lie)
Avatar 12:36am
Erik in MIchigan:

There are a bunch of great 77-78 shows. Most heads would probably agree that 72-74 was their greatest era though. To each their own.
Avatar 12:39am
Johnny Sal:

Tuning in just in time to catch some MV jams. So nice. Hello all!
  12:40am
Carmichael:

Ok, I'm old and need to rest. Thanks Jeff and hikers.
  12:43am

RE Dead...great shows from all era's. Love 67-69...but love the early 90's too. Can't really count out any era. Oh, and evening/morning Jeff...
  12:43am
Tidy666:

Give the boys a break...they stayed the course, things were existentially rough...but some magic did indeed materialize!those long nfa slow jams took a while...but I finally got infected....

Mornin Mr Conklin...cool MV jam...ever hear the Philip k dick MV jam

Only saw one Dead show, Boston Garden 77.

Tangentially, sorta...I stopped on a walk and heard about five minutes of Dark Star Orchestra live this evening at an outdoor waterfront venue.

@Tidy: I think I have. Link?

@still b/p any thoughts / memories from the show? That was a classic!

Morning Jeff and all! Great show so far...and thanks for the RHS play
Avatar 12:51am
Erik in MIchigan:

@chris - you're not alone...though I do think Mickey was the scapegoat for a lot of things beyond his reach.
  12:53am
Tidy666:

Sorry Mr Conklin...I found it on youtube(LCD?!)totally prehistoric with my tech skills....I hate to say it...but single drummer driven grateful dead was a well oiled improvisational machine!

@Erik, for sure.

I'm watching golden voyage of Sinbad with no volume and letting the ghetto score it!perfect synch!
Avatar 12:59am
still b/p:

I enjoyed it, but unfortunately, I wasn't really a fan before or after it so I wasn't too attentive or retentive, though of course I've heard the show praised by those in the know, conversationally and in print. (Boston Globe in 2015 ranked band's top five shows ever at the Garden, May '77 = #1.) I remember getting out of our shitty sits and moving around to aisle stair spots as we were shooed along by staff. And I remember a few of us buying brown/chocolate trip material from someone in the crowd, but it didn't do nuthin'.

Night all.

I also found the MV & EE Road Trips 12 tape box for a very reasonable price on discogs, which includes a show in Baltimore I was at. Can't wait to get it.

@Jeff And way to carry that Mickey vibe, or lack therof, with this song selection
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17am

Damnit, I wish Jerry would have played more pedal steel with the band. One has to wonder, had he gotten healthier, more sustainable trip–he might have pulled it out more often later on, if only to keep himself entertained.

man you absolutely never know what to expect on wfmu. I've been listening for over a decade and never expected to hear a dead bootleg.
