A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@steveo: To be fair, it’s been mostly old white guys who have ignored female artists. So any turn around is fine. But on the positive art recommendation tip, there is a small, but cool Ruth Asawa exhibit going on now at David Zwirner gallery on 20th Street in Chelsea. It also includes some ephemera including a really sweet love letter from her to someone else I can’t remember.

@Franny/BrownynB - Yup, there's tons of research on fasting and intermittent fasting that shows that it helps flush out some of the junk and helps promote cell growth - there was one study with two groups of monkeys where one group had abundant food and the other had just enough .. by the time they reached old age the calorie-restricted monkeys looked way younger and healthier. IF (intermittent fasting ) is a powerful practice. Also ladies who abstained from night time eating have a 40% reduction in breast cancers... soemthign to be said about following the natural circadian rhythms of the earth .. get enough sleep.. blah blah.. etc etc.
Avatar 10:10am
bobdoesthings:

In short - night time eating hurts your quality of sleep b/c it causes your body's metabolism to keep working when you should be getting good quality sleep.
Avatar 10:10am

i really want to try IF but i'm severely hypoglycemic, but part of me wants to say "fuck it" because i'd rather have issues with the hypoglycemia than be a glutton

I just finished reading a book called "The Pleasure Trap" that goes into the mechanics of food and drug pleasure trappings.. (its also mildly a vegan propaganda book) but it went into some amazing research about water only fasting and how it reverses a LOT of problems like blood pressure, anthroclerosis (sp?) and some other things.. I think it's in everyone's best interest to at least investigate and consider doing a 1-3 day fast once or twice a year or more. OK.... I should get off my soapbox and shutup..

BronwynB:

yeah. at the beginning of this month i did 1000 calories per day and lost 6 pounds in two and a half weeks (yay!) and felt like shit (boo!) im still trying to figure it out. maybe i should try a nutritionist...

Avatar 10:19am
bobdoesthings:

Oh.. one last thing.. in the state of NY (not sure about NJ - it's different state by state) but there is no official licensing of "nutritionist" so there are a lot of charlatans that read a couple of books and claim to be nutritionist.. so.. beware!!

  10:26am
queems:

@bobdoesthings it is the same in nj. dietitians are registered but "nutritionist" means very little, as there are no qualifications to be one. it is definitely worth it to seek out a registered dietitian, though. they go through 5 years of school to tell you what to eat.
  10:27am
JakeGould:

@BronwynB: I am no nutrition expert, but in my experience what helped me at least begin to eat healther is to simply, get more rest, drink more water and—this is more important—space out my meals by 4 hours; no exception. Sometimes I have gone 5-6 hours without a meal, but basically if you do that you really pace your body out more as far as digestion goes. And I have cut back on alcohol a lot. I’m not a complete tea totaller, but I might—literally—just have one drink to be social and that’s it.

No idea what everyone}s age is, but I think the second you get to reach 30 you need to be able to tell people—at least yourself—you don’t have to drink all the time to have fun. And be able to push back against friends and others who say, “C’mon, just one more drink!”

I know not everyone can do that, but I drank as a teen and young adult because that was a quick escape from a crappy neighborhood with limited options. If you’ve moved away from your restrictive past, don’t use that freedom to just endlessly imbibe. And again, yeah I might sound preachy but still.

Avatar 10:28am
bobdoesthings:

@queems - ah Thanks! good to know. it's also annoying because a dietician is usually working with patients as a last option - and using diet to facilitate a patient to recover from their lifestyle-induced disease.. it's hard to get a person who is a nutritionist like you get a personal trainer - directing you towards the best diet for your body, etc..

@bobdoesthings dietitians can do that too! they are pretty underutilized and versatile, as a profession. my mom is one, and she works for rutgers. they do a lot of preventative outreach in the community so fewer people get to the point if having to recover from a disease.

@Jake: That's a good idea. I do want to cut back on alcohol. I only ever drink socially but I only graduated college a year ago and in college you're expected to have multiple drinks and it took me a while to figure out that in the adult world you're expected to have one or MAYBE two. It took a few times of me being the dumbass 20something having one two many beers at FMU to figure that out ;)

@bobdoesthings rutgers has a very good undergrad program! and then there are a couple of different schools where you can do the dietetic internship program, which is the 5th year. st. elizabeth's has a program, as well as umdnj, which has been absorbed by rutgers. it is good to have people out there with the science knowledge to back up their practice, since people with no training are jumping on the nutritionist train.

@bobdoesthings for sure! i used to live that carless brooklyn life, so i totally get it. i know that my mom as able to do the whole undergrad program part time, so i'm sure there is a place in the city that will be flexible enough for you if you choose to explore it. good luck!!

Cutting back on drinking is a good idea. @Bronwyn maybe this is where a nutritionist might come in but figuring out an eating plan that makes you feel good is probably a good first step before fasting, since hypoglycemia symptoms can sometimes be improved by changing up macronutrient ratios and timing of meals.

I haven't read Robb Wolf's new book.. he's a big "paleo" guy which I am not into (being vegan) but I believe his new book argues that EVERYONE'S biology is different and some people thrive on low-carb and some thrive on plant-based diets.. it's about finding what works for you. Theres a new trend/though that you should take a month and remove sugar, gluten, meat, dairy and go on a long fast and then slowly introduce each category back in and examine how your glucose levels, and other biomarkers are affected by certain foods.. Makes sense.. but geeeesuzzzz.. that's a lot of hard work that most everyone won't actually commit to.

@bobdoesthings: Everyone is indeed different. And that’s why I really can’t stand people preaching “Soy This” and “Soy That” to me and others. I’m 100% Eastern European stock; soy does not sit well with me most of the time. At one point when my health wasn’t so great simply having soy sauce was enough to bloat me up.

Now I can tolerate soy sauce much more, but a diet filled with tofu would only kill my gut and maybe kill me!
Avatar 10:56am
franny:

Whatever the diet, try to stick with it, because I can honestly say, after years of finding what does and doesn't work for me, changing the way you eat does something on a psychological and body level -- I don't know. I feel more positive and even generally happier, no psoriasis and no shitty headaches when I wake up. WooT!
Avatar 10:57am
bobdoesthings:

@jake - I hear ya! There's also a lot of noise about soy b/c (like gluten and dairy) it's in EVERYTHING.. soy lecithin is in almost everything.. and some argue it effects hormone balance.. But to extrapolate on your point - a lot of people have mild lactose intolerance, or gluten sensitivity, etc.. but they just don't know they do because gluten and dairy (butter, milk, cheese) and soy is in EVERYTHING we eat

What if there was just a "eat non-processed foods only" diet. That is essentially the raw diet I guess. I have biotech degree and found out all food that is processed contains some level of GMO in it. I kind of went insane after finding that out. The class is all in lab coats looking sensible and serious and I'm the only one who's like "WHAAAT did you say? Wheat is WHAT?"

I think if you're in relatively good health already then finding your ideal diet is fairly simple. If you have chronic health problems that complicates things and it's hard not to feel like you're still doing it wrong, as long as you're not getting better (speaking for myself here).

as a person who is allergic to gluten, (discovered after lots of trial and error), i've discoved my body is happiest when i eat food that is real food, not processed. lots of veggies, lots of varied protein, lots of water and some red wine. i gasp at the boxes and bags of frozen this and cooked that that i see humans buying in the supermarket.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am
Gaylord Fields:

@steveo: Exactly. I think most stations that use prerecorded IDs do so because station management requires them to. The FCC certainly doesn't, and WFMU doesn't, so for the most part we don't. It's just easier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am
Gaylord Fields:

Trouble, now you're in my head with this Allá song.
  11:10am
JakeGould:

@steveo: Some DJs do have prerecorded IDs. Like there is a robotic one if I recall correctly and most recently Scott Williams got a drunk Kyle McLaughlin to do one for his show.

@franny: Also, not all flour is created equal. Some flour is so processed and glutinous it’s like eating savory sugar. I personally discovered this with pizza and bagels around NYC: If you try stuff at the better places—and not even completely fancy—the dough definitely tastes more like real bread than the discount places pizza dough. Looking at you 99 cent slices of death!

@SirJerkface, did you get any interference from a Haitian Creole pirate along that route? There are pirates at 90.9 and 91.3 somewhere around Union/Elizabeth. More complaints to the FCC might stop them from interfering with FMU. (The FCC is pretty toothless w/these pirates sometimes and doesn't really seize their equipment or fine them very much, so it might take several complaints from as many listeners as possible....)
