I just started watching over again the James Burke show Connections. Episode 8 talks about what happens when your privacy is gone with all the credit cards - he figured it out almost 40 years ago.

Those Powerwall batteries run about $7k each, installed. Their latest model, anyway. I wonder if these are the previous models that they weren't able to sell.

is non-car ownership a trend? due to rise of uber & lyft & others. now we have cat parlors, for the cat-challenged. maybe children parlors?
  6:26pm
JakeGould:

Another trend: Suburban disconnection maladies happening since urban environments are so kept and taken care of nowadays… You never have to leave home… You can mail order everything. So why live in a city? And what casual interactions does one have nowadays that everything gets delivered.
  6:27pm
JakeGould:

Like my tech work? I can do it utterly anywhere. Why again am I still in NYC for now? Job requirements that I be in meetings. Past that? No real reason. And I know I am not the only one in a situation like this.

Downward trend: selling Avon products door to door. Just buy the stuff online, or not.

The tech we all use is making a lot of people cripplingly self-conscious and isolated. Intuition and imagination are absolutely vulnerable.

A hammer is a tool. I can own a hammer, use it when I need it, lend it to a friend or neighbor. A phone is not merely a tool. It only works well if many other people agree to use one, too.

I would bet highly that the FBI and/or CIA has research underway to correlate the look of a face with the likelihood that that person is a criminal. Here's the image of a face, what's the chances that this person is a criminal?

@Ken/Hyde Park read "The Mismeasure of Man", by Stephen J. Gould, a large section is on 19th and 20th century theories about criminal faces (and racial ranking... intelligence testing, sterilization and so much more)

My great grandpa wrote “The Mismeasure of Man”… Based it off of his opinion of my grandma’s face!

Todd Barry has a joke, of a person in front row of his comedy show. he looks at person's screen, and he's being googled. person hits some youtubes and then gives todd a thumbs up, mouths "you're funny". something like that; sorry for ruining todd's joke.

(aside - the editor of STAY FREE! magazine, carrie mclaren, recommended this novel "the savage girl", back in 2002. i read it but i don't think i fully understood it. fyi. description: What is the next trend -- the next "killer app"? This question is very much on the mind of Ursula Van Urden, a burned-out art student who, after her supermodel sister Ivy's widely publicized suicide attempt, has found work as a trendspotter for Tomorrow, Ltd., in the volcano-shadowed metropolis of Middle City....)
