I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Great dance piece based on Come Out: youtu.be...
The whole show is on Steve Reich music, Piano Phase, Come Out, Violin Phase, Clapping Music
  1:31pm
rw:

Mayuko, Thank you! Always glad when I can hear your show. Sometimes it's tough to coordinate my Saturday to include the Vertigo.
Avatar 1:31pm
northguineahills:

I think this was the first phase shift piece I heard, and led me to have fun w/ my 4-track recorder in college.

@fred: that track list is the playlist of the Reich cd comp where I first got Come Out.
Avatar 1:32pm
northguineahills:

wait, violin phase wasn't included. that was another rec.

Thanks fred for that link. Trying to synch the audio now...

It's not easy...
Avatar 1:34pm

@rw totally understand, I sometimes have hard time including vertigo myself, haha. Then again you get to be treated with Zzzzzero hour instead so it's all good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm

@ngh: That Anne Teresa De Keermaeker piece was how I got hooked on Steve Reich's music, though not my first exposure to it (that came from Mats Ek)

At first I thought it was an ABBA riff. OK I'm done.

@Rickwaukee ok so now I don't need to spend the whole rest of my afternoon today going through WFMU's possibly huge Billy Joel collection. I will see what you meant.

I've been listening to FMU since 1993 but I can say with some certainty that Sugai Ken track is surely in the top 10 weirdest things I've ever heard here. (That's a compliment.) ;)

Yay, extra hour! Also, to be fair, many native English speakers aren't too familiar with the plural of "oasis". That isn't used very often.

Velma with fan!

www.google.com...
  2:05pm
rbrt:

honestly I didn't know that was plural form of oasis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
fred:

@Ike: I guess it's part of the usage game for oases, you rarely see more than one at the same time, and if you do, chances are none are real
  2:08pm
Rickwaukee:

The history of the band member line ups of the band Oasis is a study in varying Oases.
Avatar 2:09pm
northguineahills:

@scraps: that's fantastic (beautiful)!

@rbrt: Me neither, and I'm been reading on the etymological history of the English history lately.

I have a bunch of old fans I got in the equivalent of flea markets on military bases in Japan when I was a kid, but unlike everything else at my disposal, I've never used them a sound source out of fear I'd damage them.
Avatar 2:10pm
northguineahills:

Good one, Rickwaukee!
Avatar 2:11pm
Mayuko:

@Ike I hope that makes Ken Sugai happy! But I wonder what the weirdest track I ever heard could be? I thought Faust was so weird and therefore got excited when I was 19 and first heard them, but I don't feel like they're that "weird" any more... though I still like them...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm

What was Kunitaka Sato playing? It doesn't sound like any instrument I know. Some kind of zither?
Avatar 2:15pm
Mayuko:

@Scraps wow, she is beautiful! not only the fan but everything like seashell necklace and all that look great on her too.
Avatar 2:20pm
Mayuko:

The instrument Kunitaka was playing is called Amami Tategoto - the Japanese word Tategoto is I think Harp in English, but it looks more like zither to me. img13.shop-pro.jp...

Amami is an island in southern Japan.
  2:22pm

I like this Lesser Sunda, has a curious pace to it

I just wish English could get rid of all plurals. How can one pronounce the difference of Oasis and Oases, Smith and Smiths etc.

Thanks Mayuko, I'll have to investigate Amani music
Avatar 2:26pm

@rbrt I believe they're from Toronto. Just bought this recently and like it a lot too, but didn't know about em...
  2:28pm

Ha! I wouldn't have recognized the word Oases as the plural of Oasis written out, though I would have known if spoken.
  2:29pm
rbrt:

@Mayuko thanks! I'm gonna look them up
Avatar 2:29pm

@fred Takao Morishima could be the only one left who play Amami Tategoto now. I guess I don't know anything about it though, maybe some other young people are learning and/or there could be other obscure players.

I sure hope some people are learning, it would be a shame to lose yet another part of the music that should be out there
