Huge thanks to these two super-fine late-inning pledgers:

FREDRIK from Los Angeles

HOORAY for these two heroes of the airwaves!!

Tony Coulter:

So, the LP under today's cassettes should be a little easier than usual to ID, given that most of it is showing. Can anyone name it? Hint: It's the back cover.
Avatar 12:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Scraps deSelby and βrian!!

Hi Tony! It's VDGG "The Least We Can Do..."!
Avatar 12:04pm

whoops...no it isn't!

I recently read there's a shortage of magnetic tape, much to the chagrin of cassette fans.

That LP jacket is neither VDGG nor B.B. King -- the record is in the same rough stylistic territory as VDGG, though.

Hey Tony, liking this tape!

The tape on now is the red one at the bottom of the playlist pic. As I said, it comes packaged in glove, like so: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 12:13pm

Hey, David! Glad you approve!

A Certain Ratio’s Sextet?
Avatar 12:17pm
Tony Coulter:

The LP jacket? Nope.

Another hint: It's an early '70s U.K. proggy thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
JtotheK:

this is a neat song about egypt.
Avatar 12:20pm
βrian:

Does the glove imply that the compilation, eh, bears examination?
Avatar 12:20pm
glenn:

hmmmmm. is there a band called proggy thing? because that would be perfect.
Avatar 12:21pm
Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: You could be on to something. It is a surgical glove.
Avatar 12:24pm
Tony Coulter:

OK, one more hint about the mystery LP jacket -- one that almost gives it away: the band was an offshoot of The Nice.
Avatar 12:25pm
Tony Coulter:

And remember, it's the back cover.
  12:27pm
Dean:

Totally cheated, but Jackson Heights, King Progress.
Avatar 12:28pm
Tony Coulter:

Dean, the cheater, WINS!

Tony Coulter:

Despite the German lyrics, La Chorale (on now) is French.
  12:31pm
Dean:

If elected, I promise never to resort to surreptitious 'net searching to identify Tony Coulter's album cover backdrop images on his Tape Hiss programs.
Avatar 12:31pm
glenn:

or as richard thompson says "good things happen to bad people, but only for a while".
Avatar 12:38pm
Scraps:

I haven’t heard Jackson Heights, but I know the singer, Lee Jackson, and I laughed at a review of Jackson’s singing abilities: “Jackson's vocals are horrendous which is much more noticeable on soft acoustic numbers. At best he sounds like an asthmatic Roy Harper doing a Bob Dylan impersonation.”
Avatar 12:41pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, I remember reading that somewhere too! He is a pretty mediocre singer.
  12:47pm
Dean:

I dunno. I'm sampling his singing on King Progress, and it's not so bad, not at least as rock vocalists go. There's a Jorma Kaukonen kinda thing going on, though JK taps the folk vibe much better.

Speaking of Jorma, I picked up a box set of Hot Tuna records recently and I learned upon playing the first record, a live outing, that it was recorded in a venue about three blocks from my home. That space is now an auto body repair shop.
Avatar 12:53pm
Tony Coulter:

"Live from the Auto Body Repair Shop Three Blocks from Dean's House" -- I've got that one.
Avatar 12:59pm
Tony Coulter:

Funny how of the contributors to this tape, Merzbow ended up being the breakout star. There's no real good reason for that, I'd say. Not that I don't like him....
Avatar 1:00pm
Tony Coulter:

I guess, tho, that he really kept at it, and released a zillion things. Persistence pays off.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
listener james from westwood:

Yeah, I'd have thought the Riff-O-Matics' sound would've caught on more.
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

As far as I know, the Riff-O-Matics never recorded an album -- just some compilation tracks.
Avatar 1:15pm
Tony Coulter:

At the risk of sounding like a creepy letch, may I point out that the vocalist of Candidate is quite a looker. Here they are on French TV: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 1:16pm
Cecile:

I have no problem with people admiring physical beauty.
Avatar 1:17pm
Cecile:

there's just a right way and a wrong way to do it.
Avatar 1:18pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Cecile!
Avatar 1:21pm
Tony Coulter:

I'm just struck by the fact that the members of experimental/underground bands from the U.S. usually look like people who never leave their basement, whereas their European equivalents often look like fashion plates. The male member of Candidate is quite a looker too.
Avatar 1:24pm
βrian:

Among my college ilk, to describe someone as "hale and hearty" implied they were essentially drop-dead gorgeous.
Avatar 1:25pm
βrian:

Or perhaps that's "hardy."
Avatar 1:27pm
Cecile:

There is still more of a fashion/dress up culture in Europe and even on the US East Coast than in the Midwest. And we dress up compared to parts of the West Coast. My friend from Seattle who used to live here still marvels at how dressed up people are here compared to Seattle.
Avatar 1:28pm
βrian:

"Dress-up" would be a party theme in Wisconsin.
Avatar 1:28pm
Cecile:

This Candidate could be re-issued. It's a perfect snaphot of how the B-52s, Slits and Au Pairs had such a huge impact.
Avatar 1:30pm
Tony Coulter:

This tape has not been reissued, but Candidate's somewhat later vinyl EP has been: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 1:31pm
Cecile:

Yeah, it would, Brian.
I scandalized some people back in '81 when I said blue jeans would not be allowed at my wedding. That was my only request. My husband had to loan a friend a leisure suit. I figured that they could wear jeans anywhere, but if I wanted to get that dressed up, they should respect that and do the same
Avatar 1:32pm
Cecile:

Aw bummer, Oasis isn't on there.
Avatar 1:39pm
Tony Coulter:

Plus, it's a different version of "Strange Girl," so, there's no overlap with the tape.
Avatar 1:44pm
Cecile:

Yeah, both sides of the tape should be reissued.
Avatar 1:48pm
Tony Coulter:

The NSRD tape on now is the black & white one on the upper left of the playlist pic.
Avatar 1:51pm

NRSD, sounds like the 80s German band Trio in a coma.

I need to introduce this band to a lad I know in Latvia.

I'd love to get a new cat and name her Frog. Even if she's not a green cat. I'm all about naming cats after other animals. I like that DJ Hatch has a cat named Goose. Goose is a major Instagram star in my world.

Hi Tony!
Avatar 2:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Stanley!
  2:33pm
Dean:

Our cat is named Wednesday after the Addam's family character. We didn't pick the name, but it's apt. Still, I call the cat "kitten" > "kitchen" > "chicken" and variations thereof: "kitchen window," "chicken liver." She responds to all names.
  2:35pm
Dean:

Joseph Schmidt was an amazing tenor who died far too young trying to escape to Switzerland from France in '42.
Avatar 2:35pm
northguineahills:

I remember 198? like it was.... wait, what?
Avatar 2:36pm
Tony Coulter:

Tape on now comes with this note (as can be seen in the playlist pic): "We will air your tape on WMUH and send copies to various radio stations, tape exchanges, and individuals in the U.S. and abroad."
Avatar 2:37pm
Tony Coulter:

How I miss those tape exchanges. Wonder what the exchange rate is these days?
  2:44pm
Dean:

I wonder to which broad not in the U.S. they sent it.
