I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

I really this Cacciapaglia piece. New to me, as usual
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
listener james from westwood:

Weirdly I was thinking of "Fantasia" earlier, specifically the dinosaur/"Rite of Spring" sequence, and how one theme from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack (Saruman's orc-making/war-mustering theme) seems a direct nod to part of that Stravisnky piece.

@james: A lot of the soundtrack of Conan the barbarian is a "nod" to Rite of Spring. I quote that because it's closer to a rip-off
Avatar 12:12pm
Mayuko:

Ha! I was just re-watching that film for the millions of times, james! Can't believe it's made in 1940. Don't seem that old except the tyrannosaurs are not furry, unlike the recent dinosaur study.

I saw it during a rerelease in maybe 1972 or 3 when I was teeny. Saw it again in ~1991 after the restoration. Wild stuff indeed for 1940.

Anything that reminds me of Reich is going to work indeed. I've been listening to Kuniko Kato a lot these past few weeks. The local Japanese cultural center finally sent me a newsletter a few weeks ago, years after I subscribed: hopefully I'll get a warning if she comes back

@Brian That's exactly what happens in that scene! There's a slit of light far in the darkness and it comes nearer nearer - and it turns out to be a window - and emerges into this beautiful forest out there and then the sun rises. So good!

I remember vividly dropping acid with my first girlfriend, Marie, and watching a double bill of Fantasia and Allegro Non Troppo, entranced. People stared at us, which I eventually figured out was because we were laughing at the parts where we were supposed to be chilled, and vice versa. This was forty years ago; I'm amazed thinking back on it that I was even going out with crowds of people.... smh.
  12:44pm
rw:

There's a popular video game called Cuphead that uses some of the old animation techniques, hand drawing, etc. My son was playing it for a while. I'm not so into the fake scratched film but other than that it looks amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
Brian in UK:

@rw that's cool, quite understand.
I am still hooked on Eadweard Muybridge's Zoopraxiscope. He was a devilish character, he literally got away with murder.
Avatar 12:47pm

@rw, I don't know the video game, but the soundtrack for Cuphead, by Kristofer Maddigan, is pretty great. New old-fashioned jazz.

Mayuko, these images may help. Eadweard Muybridge was arguably the first person to make moving images. It is doubtful that it was to prove that all four horses hooves leave the ground at some point when it gallops for a bet.

Rotoscope is used in almost every movie now, often automatic, but also manually, to move mattes with film elements which cannot otherwise be isolated via green screens.
But the interesting Fleischer patent would be for the "setback camera", where the cells are photographed in front of rotating modeled background as seen in a few of their shorts and features.
