Halloooooo hooomans.
  10:02pm
JakeGould:

@Mayuko: From what I have seen is they find a warm spot—like near some heating vent on the side of a building—and all pile on top of each other to stay warm. Some people who are nice to strays will build small homes for them from a small suitcase-sized cooler with a hole cut out of the side. Fill it with an old blanket and the cats will do the rest.

Back when I lived in a cold climate ( i mean cold 40 bleow cold ) a friend had a cat that was so pi**** off about their new baby that it moved out and lived in the back alley for a week when it was 40 below. Would not even come in to eat. They fed it outside.... It lost part of its ear that winter.....
  10:06pm
JakeGould:

@Fox: Very good thinking! Also, outside of some fish stores are large styrofoam boxes that are good for shelters as well.

But—like in my neighborhood—there are lots of people of all ages that care for these cats. I came home at like 1:30am one of the crazy cold night and some neighborhood guys who are construction workers, were climbing the fence of a church to catch cats and bring them indoors.

@grtyvr: Now that is one willful cat!

A few years ago I was walking to work in Manhattan, and was early for a change. I walked up a street I normally don't, and I heard a kitten crying. I couldn't find it. Then I realized it was coming from the engine of a taxi parked on the side of the street. I was afraid the car would be started and the kitten would die, so I started asking passers by what to do. Someone suggested the fire house up the block. So I knocked on the door, and the most stereotypical idea of a fireman answered the door. Big hulking dude with sandy hair and mustache.

"Hi! I don't mean to adhere to stereotypes but there's a cat that's caught in a car and someone told me I should ask you to help and I don't know what else to do so if you might possible help?"

Soon after half a dozen firemen walked up the block with some tools, pried the hood of the taxi up, and right in the center was a terrified cat. The firemen handed her to me: "Here you go!"

I showed up to work late, AND with a kitten.

(I found her a home)

We didn’t have cats at home growing up, but my mom—off the boat immigrant lady factory worker from Poland—would do this: We‘d walk around the neighborhood, and if I spotted a cat behind a fence or something she’d just have no qualms about trespassing on the property, just grabbing the cat and bringing it straight to me.

I knew it was wrong to do when I was a kid but it was funny to me then an now. The looks on neighbors faces were great too.

@Jake Ha, that's a good system for cats. I don't quite understand this community cat thing though, aren't outdoor cats responsible for many birds and small animals extinctions? I rather hope the Industry City PetCo abduct them all and find them home so they don't need such nice shelter to begin with...
  10:23pm
ms_a:

Hi Daniel!
Avatar 10:27pm
Fox:

@Mayuko: Yes, that is an issue. That's why the community cat organizations try to trap-neuter-return the cats if at all possible. It's the most humane way to not let the suffer, not kill them, but try to minimize their effects on the natural habitat. In cities, though, they tend to keep the rat population in check more than they have any effect on birds. I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Daniel Blumin:

ms_a! How goes it up in the northern lands???
Avatar 10:29pm
Fox:

@Mayuko: But you are right, and the effect cats have on native species of birds is quite often overlooked.
  10:29pm
JakeGould:

@Mayuko: Well, some feral cats just will never be adopted. I hope many do! Honestly so many strays I have seen in the industrial areas of Sunset Park seem simply abandoned so I think that is cruel. That said, I am not sure the statistics about cats being bird killers are 100% correct. This NPR study explains it: “… their piece has been published in a highly credible publication, but they admit the study has many deficiencies. We don't quarrel with the conclusion that the impact is big, but the numbers are informed guesswork.”

The thing is real strays, the ones who really distrust people are unadoptable so the best thing to do is give them as good a life as they can get. Happy the PetCo in Industry City is there. That whole area is filled with strays. Tons!

I came home on my lunch break one February to find a bird flying around my apartment. Not sure how it got in, the windows had been shut for months. Plants knocked over and bird poop everywhere. But my dumb cat was sitting on the bed with a look on her face that said "What do you want me to do about it, idiot? It's your damn apartment."

@cklequ, I had a chickadee land on on the plant on my desk in a basement apartment. I deduce it came in through the broken windows on the other side of the building to get warm for a night and squeezed through a hole to my brighter side. It was very good about coming to the window to be let out. But I really thought I was losing my mind when I first saw it...

There have been several instances of cats being poisoned (perhaps unintentionally) or mysteriously dying in my neighborhood. I always kept my kitty inside anyway, but if I had another cat I would definitely not let them out. I would also make more of an effort to create activities for them to compensate for the lack of outdoor access.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm

my favorite hummingbird experience is i was working in my garden and stopped and was standing very still under my small tree on the edge just looking out -at my garden, beyond my garden... and a dark green hummingbird flew in and hovered directly in front of my face about 3-4 feet out.
it was awe inspiring but it kept moving closer by maybe 6" increments and i hastily decided that if it mistook my mouth or an eye for a flower it might hurt, so (foolishly, now i think) i moved just a hint and it took off.
