Haven't read this, but I remember the title from my ethnomusicology days: Gage Averill, "A Day for the Hunter, a Day for the Prey: POPULAR MUSIC AND POWER IN HAITI" University of Chicago Press, 1997.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Gary:

Dang! well, there's at least one for like 8 bucks on Amazon
Avatar 7:49pm
hyde:

@Gary oh, that's good. the academic books that i can't find there generally are like 40-50 bucks used. gobble that up!
Avatar 7:52pm

Gage Averill also wrote a social history of American barbershop harmony, so i think the guy is legit

Avatar 7:53pm

Of course there's nothing surprising about the similarities between this music and the NOLA Mardi Gras.and other Carnivals.

Our current Pres. has no idea what he's missing. What a crabbed little life. ( No offense to crabs.)

@Gary - it's not too late ;)
Avatar 8:03pm

Anyone visiting NOLA on a Sunday afternoon in fine weather, make sure you stop by Congo Square. There's a drum circle not to be missed. When I was there, the drumming was prefaced by a Santerìa ceremony, and a tribute to Buddy Bolden by a banjo player (who also read us a story).
Avatar 8:04pm
geezerette:

IFNY, WOW, jackpot!
Avatar 8:05pm
hyde:

@Gary pssst if there's any recent ethnomusicological academic article stuff you want to get a hold of, i know a guy
Avatar 8:07pm
ifny:

@geezerette Blew my mind as I had just arrived fresh Buddy Bolden's graveside, which had taken some hours (and two friends) to locate. (It's easier to find now since his previously unmarked pauper's grave has been replaced with a large tombstone near the entrance to that particular cemetery (still a challenge as it is a cemetery among many). I recommend that as well. Bring a little whisky for Buddy.
Avatar 8:09pm

Have followed Santeria sounds in Central Park to an extraordinary group of dancers and drummers. We joined them in the dance. Nothing but love and smiles.

I would indeed! Doesn't it drive you nuts that he left no recordings?
Avatar 8:10pm

As my mother likes to say, it's a short drive :)
Avatar 8:11pm

He left recordings, we just lost them. We silly mortals.

Missed early portion because was chopping the mad dangerous ice sheets out front...trying to do it one handed (bum shoulder) with a gravel shovel alternating with a tool made of a heavy clunky spike taped and lashed to a long thin pvc pole. Cro-magnon and petro-chemical technologies teamed to shatter the foe!
Now warm music!
