A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I have like a dozen or more near where I live. But there is one tiny tiger cat that brings a small tear to my eye: He/she’s neck is constantly askew to the right. @BronwynB There used to be a show on WKCR that played only Theatrical and "commercial" music, from past shows that everyone forgot, cabaret songs (like Irene played on Tuesday), highlighting and interviewing performers who weren't even dead, and playing board and audition rarities. "Musical Theater Today". It stopped broadcasting about 20 years ago, and its enthusiastic and obsessive host Ezio Petersen died in 2016.

The village I walk to most mornings has a couple of cats who have the run of the place, that everyone pets and feeds, but as far as we know, are formally "staff-less."
Old joke: dogs have owners, cats have...
  10:13am
JakeGould:

@melinda: Saw trailers. Seems good. The neighborhood I live in is very Middle Eastern so the attitude towards cats is decidedly non-Western: The cats basically come and go at will in shops. Sometimes at night the cats just become street cats until the morning and they go back into the store. They’re less pets and property and more “The cat that likes my store so I deal with them.”

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am

@WHenry: that sounds wonderful. as a teen i used to listen to the broadway channel on sirius xm which plays the same shit all the time and way too many shitty rock musicals (rock musicals are fine in theory but barely anyone seems to understand how to execute them well). i really should start playing more show tunes on my show because there's a real need imo for thoughtful and wide-ranging musical theatre radio programming, especially in this area.

@LindaLee: Nah, it’s more like DoH inspections are a source of revenue or a method of bullying stores out of the neighborhood. I’ve seen more than a few businesses that were in the community for decades, no complaints and then suddenly… BOOM! Closed due to violations and then guess what happens? You find out the building was—or will be—sold.

Shouldn’t be shocking in NYC anymore. It’s easy to understand: The system is so burdened with complaints that nothing happens unless something is pushed to the head of the list. Have power in the community and want something gone? Just use your political pull to push a complaint to be acted on immediately and put someone out of business. It happens far more often than you can imagine.

No, it's a little more specific than DOG. There are many breeds; fluffy, muttly, rotund, sissy, lap-squirrel, mauler, shakey & mastodon to name but a few.

Jeff Moore:

But Kim pointed out one upside to this year's choice: the winning Westminster breed often gets bought a lot in the following year, and those silly little puffballs will make way lower-maintenance pets for naive people who buy a dog without proper research than a border collie or even a giant schnauzer.

I love Elif Batuman! Also, I just read "The Nightmare Stacks" by Charles Stross. It's the best book I've ever read about a romantically-inexperienced 24-year-old investment banking software engineer who accidentally turned himself into a vampire with advanced computational mathematics, then was basically forced into the secret British anti-occult civil service, and has to fight bloodthirsty feudal magical elves who are invading Leeds because they're fleeing a parallel universe full of Eldritch horrors.

It's very funny, yet the culture of the vicious, bloodthirsty elves is actually well-written and distinctive, too. It's a military dictatorship enforced by a magical chain of command. The culture shock that the invaders experience is really interesting.
