Good Tuesday, Tony and all!

Hi Tony! I'm looking forward to another edition of "Tape Hiss". Me and Kay-sets go waaaaaaaaaay back!

Greetings, all! Since it seems almost impossible that anyone would recognize today's LP-under-the-cassettes, I'l just reveal its identity right of the bat: it's the back of this Michael Garrison album: www.discogs.com...

Tony Coulter:

@ NGH: I've got it cranked it up super high. Forgot to warn you that much of this BCO tape is very lo-fi -- has no high end ...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
Yvang:

Given his physical appearance and the sleeves of his LPs, this Michael Garrison has more than something of an american Jean Michel Jarre.
Avatar 12:10pm
Tony Coulter:

To NGH's point: Everyone raise your volume settings as high as possible during this BCO tape. I've already got it way into the red.
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: You're right on the money! Garrison *is* an American Jean Michel Jarre ... with a bit of Berlin School electronics thrown in too.
Avatar 12:16pm
Tony Coulter:

By the way, he was from Portland and there will be a track from him on my marathon premium this year. I'm doing a comp of Portland stuff from the '80s.
Avatar 12:19pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep, the tracklist does say "Pedistrain," not "Pedestrian." I type what I see....

Heya Tony. Heading up your way this weekend. Is it still snowing?

Heya, Carmichael!

Nope, the snow has skedaddled.
Avatar 12:30pm
Tony Coulter:

Apologies for the super-lo-fi-ness of much of this tape. Everyone should just hold their computers up to their ears.
Avatar 12:34pm

Bueno. Mrs. Carmichael and I are seeing John McCutcheon that weekend.
Avatar 12:37pm
still b/p:

It's a little like hearing it underwater, and a little like hearing it from outside the closed car wherein it's playing. Not complaining. Just finding the articulation of assessment....like with wine.
Avatar 12:38pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, still b/p!

Yeah, it's weird, because I have it cranked up SUPER high.
Avatar 12:40pm
Tony Coulter:

I guess the treble end of things just went missing.

Dean:

Do you happen to have the new Unsustainable Social Condition cassette? The 2016 CD, Dispersant, unlike this BCO cassette, is among the loudest recordings I've heard. I'm enjoying this lo-fi, though.
Avatar 12:41pm

Tony Coulter:

Talking about cats liking or disliking music (as Holland Oats just was), your cats will definitely *not* like the first track on side B of this tape. It features sustained angry cat yowling. Make sure your cats are well out of earshot before that track starts -- it freaked my neighbor's cat out completely (she just happened to pop in for a visit as I was playing that particular track).
Avatar 1:06pm

at work, so, no worries (although there are a lot of ferals around my office).

I'm worried about my cat breaking down the door to my "studio" once that track starts.
Avatar 1:18pm
northguineahills:

Don't have a cat, but my neighbors' cats greet me in my driveway when I pull up in my driveway, bike or car. (next door neighbor's cat left me the back half of a mole on my welcome mat, the day before they moved out).

Meow mix was the name of a lesbian club on Houston Street and Clinton when I first moved to NYC. I went to go see JD Sampson (Le Tigre) dj there once, and at first they didn't want to let me in, but my lesbian friends vouched for me and I was emphatic, that I was just there for the music, so, I got in.
  1:22pm
Psychspaniolos:

Few days ago we had an angry singer, today angry cat. Tony are you angry? :)

This Naram Sin resembles a one-off band (well, myself and another guy) c.1980, Shit Church. Crunchy guitar, lyrics about Doris Lessing and Ernest Hemingway.

Many of the acts on this tape have one or more full-length releases, on cassette and/or vinyl. Doll Parts (on now) released a very fine LP, plus one possibly even finer cassette.

There's an LA Iceplants. Not the same, I assume.
Avatar 1:44pm
northguineahills:

@Dean: I wish!, then I would have musical talent! (as opposed to whatever is I do now w/ sound).
Avatar 1:44pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Really? Didn't think the world was big enough for two Iceplants. I assume they're not the same, though.
  1:45pm

On second thought, Iceplants might be the name of the release by DJ Nobody.

There's also an episode from the mid-80s where he came totally unprepared because the apt. they lived in had just burned down.

This was sort of the golden age of OTE. Lots of participation from other Negativland members and Don hadn't yet given up on phone in "receptacle" programming yet (due to the poor fidelity of digital and then cellular phone technology).
