It won't be easy to ID today's LP-under-the-cassettes, but in case anyone wants to venture a guess, here are two clues: it's the back cover, and it's part of a series of samplers that Uncle Michael once featured in a special.

Kay, thanks for the punctuation. I had the album as a pup (retail family, I got piles of demo albums) and somewhere between Pawtucket and here, it got lost.

Tony Coulter:

So, a lot of cassettes are really unbalanced channel-wise, and I have to admit I sometimes fiddle with the balance here on Tape Hiss to make the channels a wee bit more even. Am I going to Hell?

Tony, I'd be the last person to criticize anything on the grounds of being unbalanced. 8) Do what ya gotta do!
Avatar 12:42pm
Tony Coulter:

I think often people in these super-low-budget recording situations used channel balance as a form of mixing. The imbalance is totally fine when you're some distance from the speakers, but if you're sitting right in front of a computer it's more noticeable and distracting (at least to an obsessive like me).

One of the comments blames...Obama. Rather, it notes that back then Gibson tried to blame Obama.

This Res Publika tape is, I think, number 8 in a series of comps. I should try to hunt down the others. This one was the label's last release.

Where were they based? From this one it seems like tracking down the others might be time well spent

Scraps deSelby:

I had a loss leader that I forgot its name, label Ensign (a Phonogram subsidiary), which had one track by a great early new wave band called Slow Children, “Spring in Fialta” (Nabokov ref.). It was so awesome, maybe the best Slow Children song, but it was short. The album version was stretched out by nearly a minute, and they did by pretty much stretching out the instrumental part. Then there was a longer version. Both longer, inferior versions made it into the CD, but not the short, perfect version. As far as I know, the loss leader was the only appearance of the perfect 2:20. I appreciate loss leaders just for that.
Avatar 2:20pm
Tony Coulter:

So, the next tape -- the Ob Minimax -- is very dark and creepy ... sort of a meditation on fascism and evil. Perfect for the first day of Spring!
Avatar 2:25pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Scraps deSelby: I'm a Slow Children fan too! Some of the Warner Bros loss leaders had exclusive material, so I appreciate them for that. One thing I remember is a Van Dyke Parks Honda commercial.
Avatar 2:27pm
Scraps deSelby:

Ah, I found it. It was called Blitz, with songs by Bow Wow Wow, Polyrock, Sparks, and also a great song by Robert Ellis Orrall, “Call the Uh-Oh Squad”:

Tony, do you know Pal Shazar had a solo career, more than ten years later? Lots of her albums were good, and one of them was great: =There’s a Wild Thing in the House= (1996)
Avatar 2:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Didn't know that, no! Her voice is definitely Slow Children's secret ingredient.

Her voice is distinctive, right up to the edge of brittle. Her lyrics are awesome, too.
