Hi, Alessandro! Yeah, wish they could be archived. They're not archived just to be on the safe side, legally -- because I play complete cassettes, and sometimes unreleased recordings.

@Tony - no I wasn't. But this kind of "white dub" always catches my interest when done well. Not King Tubby or Lee Perry by a country mile, but charm is ineffable.

It's funny how few U.S.'80s bands ventured into dub territory. Most just used a "reggae beat" -- which was usually the kiss of death.

This seems like the forum for this question. So Tony (and others), my old cassette deck has been a thing of the past for a while now. I still have an old receiver I run my turntable through and was wondering what cassette decks might I find compatible with that at this point? Anyone?

Cassette decks are really plentiful in thrift stores, I am noticing. Some are even high-ish quality, and it seems like lots of the ones I am looking at don't show much evidence of use, especially since cassette decks were sold as part of component systems well into the CD age, which I imagine people were using more by then,

Mine is a "modern" cassette deck: a Tascam 202 mkV. It's nothing great, but serviceable. It does have one major flaw, tho: no dolby C, just dolby B. Here it is: tascam.com...

I found a nice Denon unit and then shortly thereafter found a slightly more deluxe version of the same one so bought that. I like the non-auto-reverse models for ripping tapes. The auto-reverse ones can be infuriating if you're simply digitizing cassettes. I also find that a lot of the most recent decks - some of the cheaper dual cassette units - are of a lower quality build, depending on the brand, of course.

I actually saw a rackmount standalone Dolby encoder unit the other day. I almost bought it out of sheer weirdness, but then I'd have to rearrange my rack for something I would never really need.

The thing to look out for with older cassette decks is to make sure the belts are in good shape. You can usually test them out with a cassette that you are familiar with, and play it to see if the speed is off, which can mean a loose, worn out belt.
